Good Lord...you do realize that even the Catholic Church said that the theory of evolution does not directly conflict with the Bible? Science and religion can co-exist and complement each other.

If you think Spore is taking it too far with 'creating life', then you must hate most all games, because they simulate life to an extent and they 'create life' by having people/animals/creatures in games. Spore merely allows us to create what the creature will looking like and act like. Is it any different than any other game that has people in it where the people were created by the developers and given personalities? The only difference with Spore is that we get to do the creating, rather than the developers.

Remember this, dude, its just an electronic device. No 'actual' life is being created. I, as a Christian, don't have a problem with it at all.

I'm not religious in any way. So no I don't, and even if I did hold a faith of some sort....Spore isn't creating life, it's merely a fictional game made using plastic, metal and electricity. (Besides I support science in mixing life forms together for the improvement of mankind! So Spore is right up my street.) If it offends you then don't buy it, they aren't making the game to insult people, they are doing it for recreational reasons...

Word. I don't know how deeply entrenched into fundamentalism you'd have to be to view Spore as blasphemy. For that matter, I can't imagine going through life always wondering whether or not I was doing something to make God angry. I'm agnostic and leaning towards being an atheist, but if I was a person of faith, I would know that playing a video game like Spore wouldn't even come close to being sinful. There are true moral decisions to be made in this world, whether or not to play a game isn't one of them.

Yeah, funny how the Vatican's scientists (Yes, they actually do research there!) said evolution is true and does not conflict with Genesis. They even said you can believe in space aliens and still be a good Christian.

The only thing that is going to far is your literal interpretation of the Bible. If you believe in everything it says literally, you believe in unicorns, giant sea monsters, and that the planet is only 6000 years old.

As an ex-Catholic I have a ton of respect for the church for actually paying attention to science. I wish the same was true for more denominations. As it stands, the church's pro science stance will probably only fuel the fundamentalist's oddball notion that Catholics aren't Christians.

If you are such a religous fundamentalist, wouldn't the acts you commit in many video games be considered sins? Character creation is apparently wrong but decapitating innocent civilians, performing sorcery, and working for gods of Olympus is not?

Unless you are playing Hello Kitty, I doubt any of the video games you play will be accepted by your omnipotent and ever-powerful God. Because such an incomprehensibly brilliant and powerful diety cannot understand the divide between reality and fantasy; condemning those who do not worship him/her/it with zealotry...

Yeah, right.

actually I do agree with the author, and I think it is taking it too far...but in a country like america

where strip clubs, porn, bars, night clubs, gambling are all part of the legal system(even if not in all states) why not?

they are doing everything else that goes against being christian or any other religion...its a democracy

How about you respect and feel proud, even lucky for the freedom you were born into.

If you really wish to live in a totalitarian theocracy controlled by the will of a priest on a powertrip, then I feel sorry for you. To see someone thinking that freedom is sinful, is a sorry sight.

Democracy is a gift and if you feel that the freedoms it allows offend your god, then you are no different than Islamic Fundamentalists. Not that you plan to terrorize; however, it is along the same line of thought.

If it was possible to use Spore to create actual life, maybe I'd agree.

But it's just a game.

I agree, it's just a game. No one said it's fact. By that logic, I'd grow twice my size everytime I ate a mushroom.

I care what the OP thinks in the sense that if we are quick to tar and feather everyone who doesn't agree with us, they probably aren't likely to ever think critically about the situation at hand. While I think the OP's views are those of an incredibly sheltered person, I don't think treating him like a fool is the way to get him to think about why Spore isn't blasphemous, or why evolution isn't some sort of evil notion put forth by evil scientists who are out to destroy God.

okay, poor wording on my part. i restate, it is irrelevant what the OP thinks. in fact, he is actually completely incorrect. we can create life. for one, every time a couple reproduces they create life. even if his belief is that god originated human life, people themselves further it.

furthermore, people can create life in a laboratory. the ethics of it are not the issue, he is stating a flat out untruth that only god can create life. lastly, and most important, we are in a country of free expression. for him to claim this game goes too far is a direct assault on our freedoms. he is free to make those claims, but others are free to discredit them.

again apologies for my original comment. it was rude and i did not present my argument well, a side effect of posting at work in between doing things. thanks for calling me on it rrag :P

Oh wow... a Creationism vs. Evolution debate in GGD.

Evolution as a natural process is fact and the theory of evolution is the scientific explanation of that fact. If you think it contradicts your religious beliefs then you need to start talking to the many countless of religious scientists who have founded several theories based on actual observable facts and not their faith.

When you start trying to use fact to prove your faith "true" is when things like this happen.

Actually, there are quite a few scientists who are Christian as well. They just understand that their faith is the explanation of something outside of the empirical world and know that they don't need proof in order to believe in it.

If this is not the case, I apologise, and then promptly laugh at you for your protest that a game exists which goes against your beliefs.

Certainly not a conflict of beliefs here for me, even though I AM a Christian. If you think that playing a GAME where you create little creatures and watch them grow up and influence their development is somehow blaspheming the big Guy upstairs, then there are probably a lot of other things you should be worried about. Like killing all those Koreans in Cyrsis, or popping Zerg in StarCraft, because theoretically they are His creations if you want to make this like real life, let's not even touch Thief :P

Entertainment is entertainment. I'm not saying you shouldn't filter what you watch or do based on what you feel is sinful, but seriously, if Spore is the game that you pick to highlight something offensive in, you must have your head in the sand...

But in Thief: The Dark Project you figure out that the crazy fundamentalist people were actually right about everything! That is the kind of game this guy needs! :)
