Particularly in fps games, I don't remember using sprint in 6th gen consoles when I had the original xbox or ps2.

Even some games in last gen's consoles, such as halo 3 didn't even have sprint.

Which game even started using the sprint button and when was it introduced? I'd imagine it was one of the cod games.

And do you guys think sprinting in video games is really necessary in games today?

I think Call of Duty was one of the earliest users of the function, but I don't believe it was the first. And I see it as useful for quick escapes and getting through certain areas quicker.

Not sure, I know Killzone 1 had it.

And yes, I hate fps games that don't have sprint now. Or if they do have sprint, but only as long as you hold down L3. I like to click L3 for sprint.

Wolfenstein 3D already had sprinting. But since I guess you mean the "weapon down" sprint in more modern games, as far as I can remember, Call of Duty United Offensive (2004 mission pack) first had that feature.

@tonyx429: That's mainly because older FPS games were fast as hell nowadays you have pesky physics and realism which bogs your speed down so you need to "Sprint".

The problem is you can only sprint fowards... Back in its Hey Day you were always sprinting, infact you had a walk button instead of a sprint button.
