Do the remakes of games like Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasys really make a huge difference?

Chrono Trigger only had a remake on the PS1 I believe. Oh and to answer your question, no.

Frankly, unless the remakes have game-breaking glitches, it doesn't make any difference. For example, the various remakes of Final Fantasy 4 have tweaked the interface and added plot elements that weren't in the original (english language) release, but apart from that, it's pretty much the same game across the SNES, PS1, GBA, DS and PSP.

The only way they could change it is if they used the same engine they used for FF13. Also if they used CGI and voice overs to tell story

You're forgetting the DS version. FF3 and 4 have been given upgrade graphics on the DS, and FF4 on the PSP comes with a whole extra game (The After Years). But other than that, there's not much difference apart from better translation.

Don't call them remakes unless if they're actually remakes... ports and remakes are two different things. Chrono Trigger has been ported to PS1 and DS, while Final Fantasy IV was ported to GBA and PSP but remade for the DS. Major difference between the two terms.

Chrono Trigger was TECHNICALLY remade for the Ps1. Enhaced graphics, Dialouge changes, and FMV.

Graphics were not enchanced at all, dialogue didn't change, and FMV was added along with some system files like a bestiary. It was an port. Not a remake. The DS version was also a port. There are enhanced ports, and both of those improved (and took steps back) from the SNES original, but they were not remakes. Remake means you start from the ground up w/o lifting anything directly from the previous game, graphics included.

So is CoD:BO a port or a remake?

What steps back did they make to the DS version?

According to the definiton given on this forum, WaW, MW2, and BO were all ports.

I believe it.

The DS version of Chrono Trigger is great, but it's not too different from the SNES version. It got a new translation that's more faithful to the original script, better interface, a new ending, some additional dungeons and sidequests that feel tacked on, the monster arena (which I don't care about), and some other stuff like the bestiary, music box and the FMVs from the PS1 version. The music sounds a bit worse on the DS, even with headphones. I honestly don't think it's worth getting if you already have it for the SNES.

The GBA versions of the Final Fantasy games are just slightly enhanced ports, no big deal there.

The DS version of FFIV, on the other hand, is an actual remake, with 3D graphics, a new translation, some FMVs, voice acting, harder gameplay and a lot of other stuff. But I haven't played it, so I can't say much about it.
