So what with the new Star Trek video game coming out to generally poor reviews it's got me thinking about previous Star Trek games. When I was younger I used to love playing Starfleet Academy on the PC and always wanted to get hold of Klingon Academy but was never successful. In recent years I've played through Conquest (PS2), Encounters (PS2) and Legacy (Xbox360). While none of these three were excellent games they were all fun in their own right and there are times where I regret trading in Legacy.

Are there any other Legacy gamers with fond memories of Star Trek video games? Are there any that you've played that really sucked? Are there any that'd you'd recommend?

I've played the old Point-n-Click's 'Judgement Rites' and '25th Anniversary'. Both were pretty decent.

'Bridge Commander' was exactly what a Star Trek space combat game should be like. I hated 'Legacy', aside from the graphics i thought it got everything wrong in gameplay terms. I'm currently playing its cousin 'Encounters' on PS2, and even though it's not without its own flaws it does have some fun if you stick it past the frankly dreadful opening pair of levels.

Best Star Trek game for me though, is also tied with my favourite era of Star Trek TV: Voyager Elite Force. An excellent FPS where you can wander around Voyager itself in between missions! The sequel Elite Force 2 while technically superior seemed to be a little less inspired.

I've never tried the MMO, though with its Free-2-Play model it is a temptation.

starfleet command was an awesome game when played online as was its sequel, basically you have a ship and other guy has a ship and you can use all the ship to defeat the other one, like electronic counter measuers to lower the chance of the enemy hitting you and counter counter measures to counter that but all systems consumed power and each ship only has a certain amount of power and reserve power. with certain weapons, tractor beams, launching probes in attack mode if your weapons are down, transporting marines over to target what systems you want, tractor beaming a enemy ship and launching a shuttle just before that then the shuttle splits into missles and hammers the tractored ship :)

or just 6v6 ffa or 3v3 tvt ah good times :) easily the best startrek space combat game series ever just dont touch the 3rd one :)

if you want to recreate the balance of terror ep from the tos just get in a battle as a romulan w-e v a fed cc or ca, its really intense :)

startrek online is ok but the space combat is really simplified compared to starfleet command and the ground missions are horrendous saying that the space missions are fun but when u have to go planetside ur wanting back on your ship lol its a worth a punt for free :)

The only 2 Star Trek games I've every played that were actually any fun:

Star Trek: Voyager: Elite Force on PC, (there's also a port on PS2). It's just a first-person shooter set in the Star Trek Universe, so the gameplay is nothing new. But it does have a lot fan-service for fans of the Voyager series, and is a well-built first-person shooter.

And Star Trek: Shattered Universe on XBox. It was very fun at first, especially since I'm a big fan of the Mirror Universe stuff, specifically, in Star Trek. But towards the end of the game, the missions just got unrealistically hard, and I never did get to finish it. That really killed it.

I've also played Star Trek: 25th Anniversary on NES and Star Trek: The Next Generation: Future's Past on SNES, but both of those seemed pretty boring to me. To give the Star Trek TNG games on SNES a fair shot, I was a kid and probably didn't have the patience for that kind of game. So maybe I should give it another shot as an adult, as I'm HUGE TNG fan. Star Trek: Invasion on PS1 seems like a good idea in practice, but was executed poorly, IMO. There's just not enough fun gameplay to keep you engaged.

I remember liking the whole package. I thought the game did a great job of capturing the feel of Star Trek. The character sprites were particularly well done, IMO. Warf always made me laugh.

I liked (and still play) "ST: Conquest" on PS2. You can play it as a straight-up strategy game, or take command of your fleet in action, which sort of feels like a shmup on a contained field, as apposed to side-scrolling. I enjoy it in both modes, and you can elect to either roll strategy or action during the same game... Nice flexibility, decent strategy building starbases, and fleets. Graphics are quite good. Play as Starfleet, Klingons, Romulans, Borg, etc. etc. in different campaigns, the different races have vastly different attributes and skill trees.

I have "ST Voyager: Elite Force" but it has definitely not aged well. Still VERY playable, but be prepared for simplistic game play, and stiff graphics. If you're like me and that crap doesn't matter so much, you might enjoy it.

as a picky Star Trek gamer, (since I really enjoyed the shows, particularly DS9), the only Star Trek game that I really enjoyed was the very early PC title Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity by Spectrum Holobyte. It really captured te feel of the TNG series and had the cast provide all the voices as well. It was a point and click adventure type game, where you beamed down to planets, scanned things with tricorders, and got into ship battles. I was never sure why no one ever made a decent Star Trek adventure game after that. I played the Klingon and Borg PC games, which were okay, if a bit strange. (The Borg one at least had John de Lancie as Q).

The only Star Trek game I had played was the 25th Anniversary for the NES. For it's time, it was a interesting little game.

One of the first games I played was Star Trek 25th Anniversary (PC), really good. In recent years I played Judgement Rites which was better. A Final Unity was ok. I was never a Star Trek fan so those were pretty much the only ones I played. Bridge Commander looked really good from what I've seen.

I hated that game. The design of the levels were crazy, and there were many enemies that were too freaking small to even hit with you're dinky phaser blasts.

Oddly enough, "Dinky Phaser Blasters" was my radio name, back in the 80s...

:D
