I rather enjoyed the first Force Unleashed, enough that I even purchased the insanely overpriced expansions and add-ons that made my ultimate investment in the game probably near 100 dollars. However, I'd be remiss not to admit the game's many flaws. From a clumsy targeting system to lightsaber combat that felt more akin to swinging a baseball bat, TFU had some issues that kept it from being the stellar slam dunk it should have been. Still, there was much to appreciate, including a well-acted and decently executed ancillary narrative set in the Star Wars mythos along with some truly inspired, force-infused combat. The original was plenty of fun and suggested that a sequel, if done correctly, could evolve into something exceptional.

Based on the demo, now available on XBL and soon to be on the PSN, that looks to be precisely what is forthcoming.

Beware that some minor spoilers follow.

The game takes places on what appears to be the first level, with Starkiller being trained by those same holodroids seen in the first game that can take on the dimensions of various enemies. Initially I was worried that this demo might be short and contained to this relatively boring intro but this brief tutorial merely serves to re-orient gamers with the basic mechanics of combat while propelling the narrative forward. Starkiller is unable to strike down the likeness of Juno Eclipse, his squeeze from the previous game, and Vader informs him that the imperfection of the accelerated cloning process has rendered Starkiller useless and thus marked for execution. Upon recalling his previous death, he blows open the side of the room and flees.

The entire level takes place on the cloning facility of Kamino, expertly replicated from Attack of the Clones. From the very outset, you are treated to a heady, glorious freefall that forces you to dodge and weave through obstacles or blow through them via the force, eventually landing moments later like a bomb, sending enemy storm troopers careening in every direction. From this point onward, the demo is reminiscent of the original in terms of core gameplay but with the added benefit of an extra layer of polish that is immediately felt in both the mechanics and combat. The targeting, perhaps the greatest flaw of the original, has been tightened considerably and while I wouldn't claim it is perfect it comes close, with only a few instances during the entirety of the lengthy demo where it didn't work precisely. The developers have clearly addressed this improved targeting in interviews and the fruits of those labors are felt within the construct of the game.

Lightsaber combat has also enjoyed an overhaul and the venerable weapon no longer feels like the equivalent of a lighted baseball bat but rather now slices and eviscerates with the appropriate, violent grandeur. This combat is further punctuated by a dismemberment system that allows the limbs of enemies to be severed, including copious (and commonplace) decapitations, which leaves plenty of limbless, cauterized enemies in your wake. The dual-wielding Starkiller simply feels more fluid this time around, with plenty of elegant flourishes underlying the sheer brutality of each strike, all of which can be chained into force powers for even more devastating results.

Speaking of force powers, they return here with gravitas. The new and improved targeting system makes them feel far more effective and the addition of mind control is a pleasant, classic Star Wars-infused power that will either make your enemies turn on their own comrades or commit suicide. Lighting and push return, along with Force Fury, which temporarily imbues your force powers with even more damaging properties. Ultimately, the demo delivers a familiar notion of what the previous game offered but with a healthy dose of tweaking and polish that makes for a more satisfying experience.

Visually, TFU2 is stunning, running at a smooth framerate while maintaining a beautifully detailed world. The set pieces are vast and replete with both grandiosity and minutia, with rain dripping off every structure even as monoliths crumple and fall around your head. The entire game has a vibrant, clean look, deftly emulating the aesthetics of the films, and the lighting is equally impressive. This amazing graphical sheen is further buoyed by excellent use of Euphoria, assuring that the animations of fallen foes never repeat and that every force toss looks painful and resonates with the proper, weighty thud.

The demo was hefty, polished and fun to play and if the rest of this game fares as well I expect we'll see significant praise when it releases later this month. As it stands, I walked away incredibly impressed with what I played: yet another sequel that completely buries its predecessor.

Sounds good. I found the first game's demo extremely bland and boring, but I'm willing to give this a shot.

It was good: looks great and plays smooth, although it's another God of War wannabe and the fully powered character made the demo way too eas, it's definitely an improvement over the prequel.

I just finished playing through the Demo, it's good, controls are much better, using the Dual Lightsabers is great surprisingly, and the Force Power seem a lot better too (though Dash is still annoying, it should be a Sprint that takes away your force power slowly as you use it, instead of that small burst that ends up taking you longer than if you moved there at normal speed), also the story itself seems great from what was show, the flashbacks to TFU1 where well done, overall very impressed and looking forward to getting it at launch.

Right so any Hack and slash game is a God of War wannabe? last time i looked Starkiller wasn't a greek god of war ripping cyclops eyes out and ripping people heads off.

Ignore the rude remarks. I appreciate your impressions on this game, I've been wondering for a while how the sequel was going to fair. It's coming out about a week after my birthday.

This is a MASSIVE improvement over the first game in just about every way. Obviously by being the newest Star Wars game, it should look the nicest, but the visuals really blew me away. They really nail the look and feel of the Star Wars universe. The combat is a lot of fun. I like how easily you mow through stormtroopers. That is how it should be when you've got two lightsabers and firm handle on how to use the force.:)

I just finished the demo myself. I enjoyed it, the one thing I will say though, I hope they improve the frame rate for the release version b/c the demo has tons of fps issues. Bascially anytime I was fighting groups of 3 troopers or more (which is most of the time) the frame rate would dip noticeably and when the dismemberment happens it would dip even more. I mean I'm not usually to critical with things but this was instantly noticeable as the game stutters as the frame rate jumps all around. If the final product is like that they will have tons of complaints when this game launches b/c that's quite honestly just not acceptable for enjoyable play.

Aside from that the demo was fun, force fury seems like it will be a blast. :)

When someone post's something that's too long people usually let them know so that next time they post they can try to keep it shorter. Whoever said to ignore the people being rude, I wasn't trying to be rude just trying to let them know that they posted too much. I played the demo yesterday and it was pretty good, the combat is still really fun and the story seems promising. It's too bad they didn't fix the targeting problems though.

Having played the demo several times, I actually found the framerate to be incredibly stable. It dipped a couple of times but that was generally when there were tons of assets and action on screen but overall I think the game plays incredibly smooth. I certainly didn't experience any issues where three or more enemies dropped the fps. (Not to say that you didn't experience this, just my own observations.)

I wasn't a massive fan of the first one, but I think they could make it really good with a sequel by sorting out some of the problems with it. I'll give the demo a try.

Well said and very nice overview of the demo. I have been on this forums for years as well and I prefer posts like this rather than the "What is your favorite" or the other garbage threads that are beginning to plague these forums.

Being the hardcore Star Wars geek that I am, every new game sporting the name I pick up, and this one will be no different. It looks a bit more in depth then the first, and I cant wait to get my hands on it.

That being said, I STILL dont understand what LucasArts is doing by not working on a Battlefront 3 title. They stand to gain untold millions by just issuing the game, regardless if its good or not.

The demo was fantastic. TFU looked good but TFU2's graphics are stellar. The gameplay is also 100 times better. The only thing the demo disappointed me in was the story, but I can't judge the entire story on three short cutscenes.

I enjoyed the demo very much. It was actually a lot better than I was anticipating. I was expecting a polished version of the first with 2 lightsabers. The combat flowed very well. The animations of the force powers made you feel more in control. When I force-gripped a clone and sent him flying into a wall, it gave me that "Psi-Ops" feeling I was craving for the first, but never felt. This one did it. I think that the animations and the control had a lot to do with it. I wasn't going to purchase it, but the demo has convinced me to do just that.

I've been around Gamespot for quite a while, but I don't really pay attention to who is who unless it's somebody that particularly got under my skin (so i can avoid them in future threades). So, I apologize for the comment, with the knowledge that I didn't catch the sarcasm intended.

I enjoyed reading your impressions of the Force Unleashed II demo. I haven't played a Star Wars game in forever, but this totally sucked me in. I totally agree with everything you posted. It's a very fun and beautiful game. I think I'll show my appreciation for the (now fired) developers by purchasing this. I hope those guys got new jobs. They did great work and Lucas Arts just shafted them. Peace.

I thought the demo was fun.

Euphoria is the best physics system out there, inducing stormtroopers to commit suicide or betray their comrades never gets old and being a ruthless jedi with a blade that actually cuts people is really fun. On the downside, I didn't like the feel of the jumping (doesn't lend itself to using jumping as an evasive manuever) or the way the force grip only throws things if one is pressing in a direction (assuming that I want to throw the object towards whatever is opposite me and the object I am picking up would make for faster throws).

Force Unleashed 2 is now on my radar.

Good overview TC. I don't usually download demos, I prefer to watch gameplay footage and read the impressions of users. I was very impressed with TFU and thought it would make a better movie than the current Star Wars series.

Good to hear the frame rate is relatively stable as well.
