Spoilers are possible here. We've all had those moments, being reduced to tears by a cutscene, or seething with rage at a cheap boss. I'm curious as to what affected you guys the most in all of your years of playing, and why.

I would say MGS3 and 4's endings respectively left me an emotional wreck, but instead I'm going to say something that I've literally heard very few people admit - I shed tears when I finished Resident Evil 3.

It was like saying goodbye to an old friend, and to a story I had invested many hours in. From the Arklay Mansion to the RPD, all of the locations were imprinted vividly in my mind, and when Jill defeated the Nemesis and finally left the city I found respite through all the scares I had endured as a pre-teen with the first three games. When the nuclear warhead decimated Raccoon City, part of my childhood died with the citizens, and it really felt like that chapter of the RE series was put to rest completely. It felt like utter absolution.

How about you guys?

@rumbleruses:

***SPOILER ALERT***

I don't ever shed tears when play video games, but the closest moment that almost made me shed a tear was the cut-scene in Metal Gear Solid 4 when Naomi died and also when Raiden sacrifices his body for snake during the fight against liquid on Shadow Moses Island.

There are 4 that stand out to me. The ending of Journey, just a beautiful ending imho. Made me also think a lot after the game was done. Walking Dead Season 1 is obvious. It just so heartwrenching. Final Fantasy X with the cunclusion and sad fates of several of the characters through the game and the ending of couse. Mass Effect also stands out to me seing how some of the characters die when you have grown attached to them and the ending of course. Knowing that it is the end for Shepard.

But that's just me

The ending to Shadow of the Colossus. That was the biggest kick to the gut I've ever experienced in the game, namely because your reward is essentially nothing. You made a deal with a demonic being and paid the price. Oh sure, the girl got revived, but I got turned into an infant and likely have no memories of her.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Around the end of ME3, if you save David Anderson you have a your final conversation with him before he bleeds out and he says "You did good son you did good. I'm proud of you." Makes my eyes water every time. It's making my eyes water now just thinking about it. My dad wasn't around growing up but I can just imagine accomplishing a great life achievement and having a dad (an actual responsible one) saying those words to me. Powerful stuff.

The actual scene: http://youtu.be/tkZsHJTl7g4?t=1m26s

Also the end of Red Dead Redemption was kinda cheesy but my eyes couldn't stop tearing up.

There have been a few games that made me feel a bit emotional... the ones that come to mind are:

  • ending of Half-Life 2 Episode 2 (probably the main one that got me emotional!)
  • ending of Mass Effect 3
  • a few points in the Last of Us
  • ending of Halo 4

They're the main ones anyway.

Huh, I didn't expect the ending of Mass Effect 3 getting so many mentions already. Same here, though. That's the only game that managed to really move me, no matter how cheesy and clichéd the ending was. I was already too invested after making a three-games journey.

*spoilers*

Also, in Dishonored I was shocked at first when Havelock jumped off the platform with Emily (I was finishing my high chaos playthrough). I thought the scene was going to develop like a cutscene so I just kept on stepping forward. I didn't realise I could shoot the guy and save Emily (I figured if I shot him, she would fall off). Luckily I couldn't believe that was the only possible ending (even though it was high chaos), so I reloaded the scene, shot Havelock and saved Emily. I would have been pretty devastated otherwise...

Theres only been one game that made me cry and it was final fantasy x, the build up to the ending was so good, that when yuna is speaking to the crowd i could feel what she was feeling.

Other games that have made me rage have been; kingdom hearts 1, when you have to fight riku when he is a boss, it took me 30 tries to beat him and i gave up for a week then came back to him and annihilated him, when i did defeat him i was screaming and shouting.

Star Wars X-Wing Alliance

When your family gets caught in an Imperial attack on a rebel base and die and only your brother survives. I actually reloaded the mission right away and tried to save them. Finally realized that I couldn't even after destroying a Star Destroyer single handedly. Just heartbreaking to hear the radio transmissions while in the middle of dog fighting with TIE fighters and trying not to be overwhelmed by them.

That whole game was awesome. I can't believe they never made another one. Every time the imperials jumped into system with a Star Destroyer was awe inspiring.

The ending to Majora's Mask is the most bittersweet thing I've ever seen. It gives me goosebumps to this day just thinking about it.

*SPOILER*

I don't think they would have impacted me as much had I not played BL1, but when Bloodwing and Roland die in BL2 surprised me quite a bit.

The best ending for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories left me in a funk for a good little while.

I cant remember the ending to final fantasy 9, but I do remember crying while watching it, walking dead season 1 left me upset for several hours after it as well, and I can't remember what made me cry in final fantasy 3 but I definitely remember crying as kid playing that game. I am sure there are more but I can't think of any right now

Some of the stories in Lost Odyssey are brutal. It's the only game that's actually made me shed tears. Emotion can be more than just tears though. There were moments that really gripped me in Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Brothers. Too many to list honestly.

My most emotional gaming moments come from two games: OFP Cold War Crisis and Fallout 3.

Cold War Crisis was amazing. Just in the fifth or sixth mission your whole squad is dead and you're on your own trying to escape a full frontal invasion. Then you're captured and just when you're about to be executed you are saved by the resistance. You spend some time with them and you execute missions together but after sometime you leave and back in the U.S camp you're promoted. After some time you return to the resistance trying to gather intel from them just to find out that their whole base is being wiped out by the Russians. It's truly a sad to see your saviors being killed and there's nothing you can do... Truly an amazing game.
