What do we think of the in game tuturials and the general level of in game "help" that it seems every game has these days?

Maybe its just in my head, but this seems to be on the increase to the point where its starting to get in the way of the game play. If people need to know that you move the control stick to look around, then maybe gaming is not for them!?

What is wrong with just Reading The Freaking* Manual.

*for the benefit of GS

I don't mind it, sometimes it is helpful and more convenient to have it on the screen so you don't have to pause and look it up in the manuel. We should have the option of turning it off though, which most games I play have.

The first games that started to be a little bit subtle about it and blend it into the gameplay amused me, but now it just annoys me. Esp the really really basic things like moving the stick to make you move!

As long as it's subtle then it's all good.

To be honest like all learning it's best to actually do the motions than read about them. So, to help your fingers get used to all the new maneouvers they're about to do a tutorial is a good thing to have.

As long as the game makes it so you can skip the tutorial I have no problem with it. When it really gets under my skin is why they have this long winded tutorial that you can't skip and on top of that you have to go though it everytime you start a new game.

I don't mind tutorials, but I hate when in-game characters say things like: "to do this, press the select button". It breaks the immersion like a hammer does with crystal.

Well each game has their own set of controls, granted there is little variation over other similar games but I do find the small tutorials to be helpful. Though I do agree, do they still need to say *Use the left stick to move. Use the right stick to look around* anymore?

Tutorials should always be optional in my opinion, they annoy me too.

CODEC conversations in MGS games are a perfect example of this immersion shattering phenomenon...

I like reading manuals they are fun. I usually learn the controls by myself bit its Fun knowing the game more.

Like others I don't mind it as long as it is subtle and optional.

Tutorials built into the game are much better at teaching game mechanics than by reading a manual. I doubt I could have learned the Skate Flickit system had it not been for the fantastic tutorial. It took a long time to get used to it and figure a lot of it out on my own but without the introduction I wouldn't have gone anywhere.

You should be complaining about the increasing simplicity, linearity and "handholdedness" of games themselves, not integrated tutorials.

I don't mind either way. Manuals are good, but I will only read them for games I really care about. And beside, if someone feel better by holding my hand, why not? ;)

The games that give you tuturials as a seperate thing are the way to go, like a different option in the menu. So if you know what you're doing or you just want to wing it, you can just start the actual game.

"Hey Master Chief! Look up, then down!". Stupid. :D

As long as the tutorial fits the game, or is just needed, I don't mind it. For example, the tutorial in halo CE fitted perfectly in the game, and was subtle. As soon as you needed to crouch for the first time, it just popped up at the side of the screen how you should do it etc. It never got in the way of gameplay really.

Games like skate on the other hand need to have a thorough tutorial, because the game mechanics are unlike any other game. If you're playing your tenth fps, you kinda understand what every button does, but if a game is completely different than everything else I prefer to get used to it in game rather than from a book. You also learn it better if you can do the action right away.

They did... many eons ago. Now they are just a two-page, black-n-white booklet with explanation of controls and how to get online.

It depends. Sometimes the tutorial segments are really well done incorporated into the game.

But I do hate certain tutorial levels, like mandatory training segments, etc.

I think the tutorials should be optional, like by putting them in the main menu but not into the game.
