If I wanted a story I would be a DVD lover...I'm not, gameplay is all that matters but if they can add a good story onto that then even better.

Both are very important for me. But I always look for gameplay in every game, no mattter the genre, while I am usually only worried about story in RPG's. Also, most games have gameplay taking up more time in a game than story does; you're usually playing a game more than listening to a story in one.

So therefore I believe gameplay is a tad more important than story.

I try to look for a good balance, although I do prefer games that have a fantastic story and not much in terms of gameplay (unless it's the worst game ever :P) over the vice versa, as long as there's an actual story and plot. Games like Worms doesn't count :P.

good gameplay, contra have a stupid story but i like it, super mario and metroid too. A good story is a complement that make a good game unforgettable but a good story and a bad gameplay game better make a book. GOOd game play + bad story=good game, Good story + bad gameplay= bad game= book heheheheh Good story + good gameplay= great game

I consider story, with a great story and presentation you may have a game with normal gameplay elements tend to happend with rpg be one best game ever crafted look at ff x it doesnt offer a whole bunch of new ideas well other than the trancendents of ps1 to ps2 apart from that the story make the game better than most rpg out there .

hey final fantasy is not just the story and let be realistic the only goods FF are the 6 and 7 because the game play are different and have. final fantasy 6 because the diferent character, different habilities and the espears or whatever nad final fantasy 7 for the limit break, materia, summon and minigames. without this those games are CRAP

Or more appropriately, you'd read a hell of a lot more books if you cared about story. I like to play games, not watch/read/listen to them.

Either read or watch it really doesn't matter much, both as boring as hell to me now days. I'm with you on prefer to play them rather then watch them.

I'd pick gameplay. I tried playing through Final Fantasy XII for the story, but it didn't end up happening.

Story by far. I understand the importance of gameplay but I pay less attention to it.

Both are good, but I lean towards story more often than not. Part of why I liked the Metal Gear Solid series so much was the story, especially 4 since that was literally a 24 minute cutscene, crawl under a truck, another 24 minute cutscene ad infinum. A lot of JRPGs that I love also have incredibly average gameplay mechanics but blow me away in terms of story-telling.

gameplay. i expect more focus on story in an RPG (compared to other genres) but i expect excellent gameplay also., for other games like FPSs and RTSs.....story is way way way down the list of priorities. i very much subscribe to the half life/metroid prime/bioshock school of thinking when it comes to stories and story telling in games. let the player know what he/she needs to know and keep the fivilous background stuff in the background.

Gameplay by far. If I want Story, I'll read a book. Look at Killzone 2 and Gears of War, for example- lame stories, awesome games. Of course, when a game does have a great story it's an added bonus.

I look for good, long-lasting gameplay recommended by a large number of people. You don't need to have a fantastic story for a game to be good, and you actually don't even need a story at all. Take Pac-Man, for example. It's classic, it's addicting, and yet it has no plot behind it at all.

It really depends on the genre. Typically, if its in the case of RPGs, action adventure and point-and-click adventures, a poorly conceived system can be easily forgiven if the story is crafted well.

It is a tricky balance, If a game has a good story but only mediocre gameplay I will give it a go, or vice versa

Games themselves are all about gameplay thats why we have Space Invaders, Pac-man, Tetris...in fact all the old games had next to no stories yet they were still brilliant games which you could play again and again.

But as gaming has evolved its adapted things to it like music and story and some genres are even based on those things like as BladesOfAthena said Point & clicks...they would be **** worthless without story so and some games like I don't know rockband or guitar hero wouldn't exist without music.

Still what makes a game is gameplay everything else is just something to improve gameplay, as I said before Gameplay is all that matters but if they can add a good story or music then perfect.

Definately story! Although gameplay is important. This is proabably the reason why I dont finish alot of games, as I just get bored of the story... If the story doesnt keep me interested, I will more than likely stop playing the game Also why Assassins Creed is one of my favourite games - a great story (beautiful cliffhanger!) that kept me wanting more, and wanting to know how the story finished. And it had great gameplay to match Im surprised story is not no. 1 for alot of other people here...

Gameplay is and always will be top priority. Story is merely a secondary factor to me. There is hardly any replay value of a game if the story is great but the gameplay falls short.

That's a tough call, but I'd have to say story wins. I guess that comes from my love of movies and good plots.
