This is a tougher decision than you think. Both games are incredible and have a lot to offer. It really depends on what kind of gamer you are. If you are truly old school and completely hardcore, then just go with Super Street Fighter II HD Remix. The reason I say this is because it was specifically re-designed by hardcore fans for hardcore fans. It is punishingly difficult when playing against online players and it has a competitive bar that is higher than that of Street Fighter IV.
Street Fighter IV is a game that will appeal to both the hardcore gamer and the casual gamer alike. But it's more expensive, as you pointed out. The graphics are definately superior and the fighting engine is one of those "easy to play but difficult to master" types. Hardcore fighters will find a home with this one but casual fighters can enjoy the experience as well. It's got excellent training options and a wider variety of characters. This might be the one to go with if you're starting out.
The meat of both of these games is the online community. You'll find that the competition is fierce for both games but maybe a little less so with Street Fighter IV. SSFIIHDR is the game for the most hardcore fighter if you're looking to prove your might against the players of the world (or at least the US).
With all that in mind, I recommend reading my reviews of each game. Perhaps they can help you make a decision. No matter what you choose, both titles are of incredible quality and you'll have a blast with either one. Keep in mind, both reviewsare of the Xbox 360 versions. I cannot say anything about the PS3 versions of the games as I have not played either one enough to make a fair comment. Here are my reviews:

One more thing... no matter which game you get, you're going to want an arcade stick. Playing with a standard controller is a waste of time. The PS3 controller is kind of ok, but the 360 controller is atrocious. But neither one can match the percision of an arcade stick. They are readily available now, both the standard Arcade Stick and the Tournament Editon Stick fro Madcatz. I have both, myself and I use the regular Arcade Stick. I have modified it so the buttons are all official Sanwa Denshi buttons as is the Joystick itself. It is a great stick and was well worth the money, if you ask me. Anyway, get a fight stick if you want to play either game properly.
You only really need an arcade stick if you intend on playing on a high competitive level. Let's face it, that's a minority of people who actually buy fighting games. I prefer to just have friendly games with other laid back players. You can have an interest in fighting games without being a tournament style hardcore player. for my own playing, the 360 controller works just fine. Having a grand time with BlazBlue, and so are the tournament types, both in our own way.One more thing... no matter which game you get, you're going to want an arcade stick. Thanks a lot everyone, especially Shabulia. You really helped out a lot, and I red boht your reviewes, they were great. I decided to get SF2, as it's more "hardcore" and is, well, cheaper. The game just feels very streamlined, and the online is awesome. (I've played about 10 matches online, I've only won once.) I've played it for about 2 hours, and I'm addicted already and it's an amazing game.
I was really considering getting SF4, but after reading Shabulia's reviewes and everyone else that helped, I decided that SF2 is right for me.
Thanks everyone!!!
To be honest, you're better off this way.Damn, I think I should have waited.. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is coming out in a week, and maybe I could have gotten that instead...Well whatever..

I agree with DC here. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is the better choice between it and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. MvC2 is a blast but it's nowhere near the hardcore fighter that SSFIITHDR is. It's more of a party/fun fighter. The level of depth doesn't compare and neither does the strategy. Still, it's fun and might be something to get later on down the road. Also, I do suggest getting Street Fighter IV eventually. It's well worth the price as it's a very high quality game. But I think you made the right decision and I am glad to hear you're happy with your choice.
