Reposting this from GGD, because I think it would be more appropriate here.

----------

After eight years, the game's finally complete:http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/

I have to say, this is one of the best remakes I've ever played. The team put so much content into this...I'll be playing this game a lot. I remember playing SORR back when it was in beta, and that was many years ago. It's a totally different game now. Adam is back in, and he's powerful (Max is still tops though). The points you earn-in game can be redeemed for unlockable content, so now you have a reason to get good at the game other than to finish it.

There are now different routes in the game that you can take, which gives the game even more replay value. There are unlockable mini-games (which I don't think can be unlocked through the store), and even a SORR Maker, which lets you make your own levels (you have to unlock it first, though). I can't wait to unlock the latter and check it out.

Sega may never make another SOR game, but I won't mind now that we have SORR. The Bombergames team deserves whatever amount of donations they get for making this masterpiece. I'm going to donate myself...there's no way they can make a game of this quality and not be compensated for it.

Downloaded this last night but have yet to play it. I'll probably check it out today after work. Streets of Rage 2 is my favorite beat-em up and it's nice to know that there are fans out there that haven't given up on the series.

Bad news (I'll just quote someone else):

Potential drama! Downloads for the game have been pulled, and Sega is apparently 'in talks' with the developers. Lockdown on information beyond that.

Sega have a choice here, and really, there's only one way they could win.

If they play it cool and give this project official blessing – maybe even official hosting – then they'd rake in huge heaving piles of fan-love, adoration and good press.

If they try and shut it down, then they're already lost in a hilariously massive way. An estimated 100,000 people (at least) have gotten the game already, and I've personally re-hosted it on two seperate sites already. No doubt others are doing the same. If they try to stop it, they're going to lose a lot of cred and the game will spread like wildfire anyway, just to spite the big corporate bully.

It'd be doubly dickish, as the SoRR team officially ran it past Sega earlier in development.

So, fingers crossed that Sega do the right thing here. They stand to gain a lot if they do. If they don't, well, just watch as everyone on the internet downloads the game twice over.Dominic White

Umm... no, it isn't :?

I tried it out. It's a great remake. I reached Stage 6 and died. Sucks to restart all the way from the beginning, but still, I gotta give props to the team for making such a game.

The official site does not have the game available for download. Google to get the game from other sites :)

Read the instructions. They're very thorough. I browsed the manual, but didn't read much. Still, it seems to go over absolutely everything.

Well apparently Sega has noticed the SoR Remake and had Bomberman Games cease all work on the game as well as removing all download links available to the public. It's a shame. Actually more like a lot of BS. Sega hasn't done anything with the SoR property since SoR 3 back in 1994 and these guys spend EIGHT years working on this game out of their love for the series.

You can't just take someone else's IP and hope they don't care. SEGA's in all their right to shut them down, even if it certainly won't stop the distribution of the game.

Any other company would've done the same.

Alot better than that. Even better than the original SoR games. It's got massive ammounts of content and improves upon the originals in every way. Sega obviously knew this was in development for 8 years and only took it down when it started getting some attention. Jealous much? Their are plenty of Sonic fan made games out there and they don't even get touched by Sega.

These games should be treated like mods made by the community not some attempt to steal their work. Take a page out of Valves book Sega. They totally should of hired these guys and released this version on PSN, XBLA and WiiWare. Would of a sold a lot.

They didn't just take someone else's IP though, they asked for permission and Sega were fine with it. Only now that it's become popular they decide to take it down, even though they were fully aware of it. I'm a big fan of Sega, I grew up with the Mastersystem, Gamegear, Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast but I am extremely disappointed in Sega. It's a fan made game, freeware that the community can enjoy from an IP that's been dead for what? 17 years? They aren't making any profit from it. It also puts to shame anything Sega has done in years. For example, look at the complete laughing stock Sonic has become. Well done Sega, you have alienated even more of your fanbase and for what? It's out there and can't be stopped, and now this will encourage even more people to download it.

SEGA has included the Bare Knuckle/ Streets of Rage series in their compilations, and has also released it on the console download services. I would say it's an IP they still count to make money from.

Also, as far as I'm aware Sonic Colors was well-recieved, and if you think this game puts to shame everything they've done in years, then you certainly either don't have a clue of all the great titltes they've developed and published in recent years, or you just don't wanna see them simply because you happen to like this fan-made game more.

SEGA, like everyone else, can't stop ROM files of all of their old games from being downloaded. They also can't stop ISO rips of their new games neither. Why should they be able to stop this? Yet that doesn't mean they just should condone it. They did what they could.

Alienate their fanbase? You mean the ones that just dowload stuff from the internet? I bet right now more people care more about Shogun Total War II and them publishing a sequel to Bayonetta or Vanquish alone that they will ever care about this game.

But see that's the problem, like Franky-the-bat had mentioned, Sega had given them the permission to make this fan-made game. It's only when it become hugely popular around the web that Sega decided to shut it down. Kind of a double standard there.

Maybe it wasn't the right guy that gave them permission. Maybe he/she or they don't even work there anymore. Maybe other division complained, who knows.

Whatever the case, or if they in fact gave them permission or not, they have the right to take it down if it affects their interest.

You think Nintendo or any other company would've acted differently? If anything, Nintendo probably would've pushed things even further.

I had played a beta of this awhile back and wasn't overly impressed. But now...

This is the geatest game in the history of ever, period!

It's like a dream come true. BE MR. X!!!!??? Be Shiva (not the fake, half-complete SoR3 secret Shiva, but REAL, FULL-FLEDGED SHIVA!). Make weapons never disappear and carry them between stages? More areas than you can shake a stick at? A Survival mode?

I feel like I died and went to heaven. Or maybe the awesomeness that is this game is a dream, and when I wake up it will be gone.

I agree totally. This is actually better than the original series and greatly expanded and updated. Excellent game with professional level testing and all. I haven't run into one bug or anomaly as in other homebrew games. EXCELLENT remake. If you played it, you'd think it was a natural progression of the series made by paid devs.

Or it could lower the sales of the games already on the download services? Who knows. All I can guess is that they took it down to make it a bit harder for casuals to learn about it and download it.

It's their IP anyway. They can do anything they want with it. From what I can tell, most of the people complaining about this probably don't even buy SEGA games in the first place. So I highly doubt SEGA cares about what they'd think.

You're just coming across as a huge hardcore Sega fanboy that accepts anything. This game is a fan tribute, a compliment to Sega and the SoR series and it is in no way implied that it's to hinder sales or make money in any way, shape or form. Not that a PC fanmade game could hinder sales of old genesis games ported to consoles. The game is completely coded from the ground up and the music is completely remixed, the only thing they borrowed where the sprites and backgrounds. And I'm sure there have been plenty of developers that have accepted fanmade games before but I guess Sega is too money hungry to care about it's fans.

Oh and the download for the beta of this game has been up for like well forever. Which further proves the Sega didn't give a damn about it until it actually started getting attention.

Yes, but it bears the series name which is probably copyrighted. I'm pretty sure this breaches a lot of license agreements which makes Bomber Games open to a lot of law suits. Even borrowing sprites and backgrounds can be illegal.

But I do disagree with what Sega has done. Sega should have just hired these guys and then released the game via PSN or XBLA and made a crap load of money. Win-win for both Bomber Games and Sega.

This is like a tale of two posts. Totally disagree with everything in your first paragraph, and then your second I completely agree with.

Crossel777

1. "It's in no way implied to hinder sales" and "Not that a PC fanmade game could hinder sales of old genesis games"

...what do you even mean by that? It doesn't matter what it's INTENDED to do, it's what it can POTENTIALLY do. And heck yes, this can hinder sales. I played the beta quite awhile ago, and frankly, it wasn't very good. I later purchased the Sega Genisis PS3 collection disc, with all the SoR games on it. Now I download the final version of this and it's awesome. AWESOME. Would I have bothered with buying the Sega Genesis PS3 disc if I had played the final version of the remake first? Probably not. There's a sale Sega just lost.

2. "The only thing they borrowed were the sprites and backgrounds."

The issue at hand is clearly intellectual property here, NOT CODE. It doesn't matter one little bit that it was coded from the ground up. If I code my own Halo game from the ground up, I can't argue that "well I made it all myself, so you can't do anything to me." I've stolen intellectual property.

Oh and the download for the beta of this game has been up for like well forever. Which further proves the Sega didn't give a damn about it until it actually started getting attention.

This, on the other hand, irks me too. Much like the Chrono Trigger remake project, Sega should've put this down as soon as they got wind of it, if it was going to be a problem. My guess is since the early betas simply weren't very good, they let it pass because they didn't consider it a threat to sales. They waited until it became so to put it down. Which is completely within their rights to do, but still a poor way to handle it.

Man this is fun. It's a good remake. I think it's better than the original.

Maybe Sega pulled links to it so they could package it up and sell it under their own brand name.

You're saying they're going to hire the fans that developed the remake?

Heh, maybe if Sega made a SOR 4 themselves instead of porting Sonic the Hedgehog a million times they wouldn't have this happening.
