I've only played the first and third games. The first I enjoyed, the third I struggled with more than any JRPG in memory and finally tossed it aside. It did some things right, but oh so many things wrong. I want to play the second at some point, as the general consensus is that it's the best. Four is supposed to be terrible. Worse than three terrible, by a huge margin.
I enjoyed 4 actually. I like doing item collecting to make armours and such though. 2 was my favorite, waiting for the Playstation store to bring it out. Haven't played 5 though. Excellent series though.
I would pick up III or V if they weren't so difficult to get a hold of these days. The only one I can find for a fair price is IV, but the consensus seems to be that that one was pretty bad.
I own every Suikoden game except 2. Suikoden Tierkreis for the DS was my first and triggered my interest in the franchise. I have since purchased and played 1, 3, 4, 5, and Tactics. And except for Tactics, I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them! I'd love to find a complete copy of 2...it's just my wallet isn't that thick! :P
A pretty good series I must say, the second Suikoden is indeed my favorite and I got that as a gift back in 1999. I am glad I did because otherwise, I would never have heard of the series. But heres what I think of them

2-FANTASTIC - My favorite.
3-alright
4-good
5-FANTASTIC
As for the DS one, I have never played it but I might check it out sometime.
my collection is almost complete. i finally got suikoden 3 brand new for $43. won it on ebay today. unfortunately there was another good deal...arrrgh. there is one game lot of suikoden (suikoden 3+suikoden 5+strategy guide suikoden 4) all for $99 or best offer (they are also brand new and sealed). this is a good buy imo. if you dont have it, this is your chance. suikoden 3 is really expensive among the 3 ps2 games (usally around the $70ish +shipping). suikoden 5 is around $60ish + shipping. suikoden 4 is cheap.
i might lose a couple of bucks but atleast my collection for the ps2 is finally complete. ill try to take a pic of all of them lol.
btw the item no. is 120493998593 on ebay. its a good deal that shouldnt be miss imo if your hunting sealed copies of rare games~
