I got an Atari 2600 when they first came out for christmas, my parents said they were playing it for a good month while I was asleep before I got it as a gift. Best game I played on it I'd have to say Pitfall 2 (and I was also addicted to Yar's revenge).
Then got a NES, about 6 months after launch. I was so excited to get it, remembering playing arcade versions of the games in the early 80's.Best games: tough to beat Super Mario Bros 3 for that system. That said, they where a lot of good games for the system. My favs off the top of my head: Adventure Island, Battletoads, Megamans, Ninja gaidens, Zeldas, etc.
At 14, got an SNES. To me, this was my favorite console to date. No more games than the NES, but to me the quality the games had on this system was top notch. My favs where: Street Fighter 2, Fzero, Super Mario Worlds, Super Metroid !!!!!!, Zelda: Link to the Past !!!!!!!!!! and so much more...
At 17, sold everything :-O Don't ask me if I regret it!!!!! Remember selling my SNES (it was mint!) with 30 games for cheap (a little over 100$).
Nowadays, trying to catch up on some of the games I haven't played back then. The Oldest system I've got right now is the Gamecube and GBA. I've bought game collections (like the megaman and Zelda collection per example) or I buy virtual console games on Wii-Wii U (recently got Super Metroid for 30 cents on VC, no one in their right mind almost could pass this up for that price, unless you had the game already).
I thought about buying older systems and games. Even if they don't come cheap, they rarely lose any value (unless damaged of course). Sometimes I hunt for some good games on Gamecube and GBA, play it, and if I don't want to keep them, I try to sell them for my cost price (sometimes I get more for them, sometimes less, but I'm pretty much even in costs). Therefore, free to play!
Right now, if I had to choose which older system to buy, I'd be the SNES for sure. 2nd place NES. Atari: No thanks!
