Even though I think Blu-Ray is better, I know some prefer HD-DVD. This move isn't very good...but then again, Wal-Mart plans to do a big HD-DVD push.
EDIT:And one more thing. Why spend $500 on a stane-alone when you can get the same thing at the same price that can play games?

Wait a second here, I thought from a technical standpoint that HD-DVD was better in almost every way and that almost every movie that ends up on both formats looked better on the HD-DVD? Really though, this is great news for Sony but bad news for crazy technophiles everywhere.
On a related note, it is sad that this has become a video game related topic.

HD-DVD isn't technically superior. Side by side, Blu-Ray's technical specifics edge out HD-DVD's slightly. Blu-Ray had problems with the quality of their first-generation movies last year but that was already fixed at the beginning of this year. In either case both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray come off of the same masters in movies like Planet Earth so theres no difference between them in terms of quality. It now is all down to who can offer the movies, and Blu-Ray has a lot more to offer than HD-DVD in this regard.

Ending this stupid format war benefits everybody...the reason retailers such as Target and(some other store I can't recall) is doing this is because retailers HATE the war with a passion. It's slowing down the adoption rate to a crawl and it's a tough sell given one format will die off. They also see how the audio version of this played out, and all that happened was that people ignored DVD-audio/SACD and flocked towards MP3's. Seems the same thing is happening with Youtube, look at the quality of that. If it's streamlined and easy to understand, people will use it. Blue-ray/HD-DVD are at least 10 years from that due to the format war.
i heard something that blueray disc's have been degrading almost asthey are self destucting.
but what will happen to all the dvd players that will need to be left unsold will they be reclyled to become blue rayor will they just be towered on to landfills.
basically this is the blu-ray commision screaming "we won the format war"
the same thing happened with blockbuster.
Headlines: Blockbuster only to rentl blu-ray
everybody that goes to blockbuster knows they still rent HD-DVDs.
It doesn't really matter the format war is useless, since neither will be as successful as dvd. also blu-ray will just be replaced by digital distribution before it even gets fully adopted by most consumers.

I think digital distribution for things like HD movies is further away than a new dominating movie format, after all how many people have the internet connection (and more importantly what servers provide the access) for people to download movies as quick as it takes to place the disc in the player and push play. Even in Korea which is light years ahead of the rest of the world in terms of internet adoption rates and speed has digital distribution yet to take off. Of the two new movie formats Im pretty confident Blue-Ray will dominate, thats not to say it will become the standard but I definately see HD-DVD's dying off.
