Well I have to give to Square Enix, their demo takes the cake for best tech demo for this E3. Just saw Epic's rendition and well, it looks nice but its not on the same level as Square Enix's attempt. However, the technology behind U4 looks pretty interesting especially if they have real time lighting.

My money is on that Unreal showcase. While not all about action or anything like that it's particle system is astonishing and is said to run without a hit to performance at all. To see fire and snow swirl around like that was cool. Also the lighting is very impressive.

Another thing is out of all those tech demos (Square and AMD) I think the Unreal engine will be the only one to actually reach the level in game as shown in the demo

EDIT:

This showcase of the FF demo and is more impressive to me and shows off the engine in real time much better and gives me more hope that this could be in real time. But one thing is that the lady says it is running on a high end PC which the consoles won't be next gen. But she does say a high end PC can be bought at any electrical store so who knowsrazz.gif

yes this "high end pc" happens to not be very cost effective bestbuy and the like are renown snake oil salesmen in this regard. in reality most of square enix's game engines especially for its final fantasy licensced games are more cpu dependant than gpu. ff11 took a pretty pwoerful cpu for its hayday and ff14 demands that quad core. likely you could achieve what they showed (assuming at that level of detail) with a nice quad core an hd 6850 or gtx 460

That would be cool and hopeful for next gen graphics but I think the UE4 will be more adaptable and efficient. The Unreal engine is already very easy to use and this one seems like a good dev team could crank out a very impressive looking game in no time

Square's Demo is very impressive. The animations are very fluid and natural looking. I think the action actually detracts from it a bit though. What I mean by that is I see more impressive actual tech happening in the Unreal demo, perhaps because it is a bit slower.

Unreal wins it for me. The lighting is spot on, but it's the particles which are crazy good looking. The blocks breaking, the sparks. The lava was good too and I'd be interested to see how water looks. When it pans out of the hall it had me blinking to see if I was looking at a game or a movie. As other people said I also think the Unreal will be easier to implement in an actual game setting, just based on past games.

Just saw the tech demo. Epic needs some better artists lol.The Square demo

The tech on display was pretty cool. Liked the particle effects. The mountains looked amazing, cant believe such a massive area is being rendered in realtime. Only aweinspiring thing in the demo. The rest of it looked cool but they couldve used a better demo to show off the tech. Lava, really?

UE4 demo looked very good but still didn't wow me. Hell Star Wars 1313 was far more impressive than the UE4 demo. SE's was on an entirely different level though. That was mindblowing.

Wow both are impressive. I wonder how these engines will look with unimpressive hardware setups. Personally I think that there is too much going on in the Square Enix demo but that old man's beard is something noteworthy lol.

Kotaku has an interview with Epic about UE 4.0. Interesting and encouraging. http://kotaku.com/5916859/how-unreal-engine-4-will-change-the-next-games-you-play -------------------- The "Kismet" tool in UE4 makes it easier for anyone who is using the engine to click on an element in game-say, a pillar or chair or bookcase-and add properties to it within seconds. Ideally, Willard says, this allows developers to create more "whimsical" game worlds that are more full of surprises tucked into every little thing. -------------------

When you think of what the demo is a showcase for it makes sense. It literally shows off every feature the engine has, even though it was really boring to watch. But THIS is a walkthrough of the engine and is FAR better to show whats on offer than the elemental video. The lighting is insane and the particle effects are all very dynamic and actually react to stuff like wind and momentum. Not to mention the engine works like clockwork and devs will be able to really polish there game fast with it

Yeah it sounds fantastic. These are all the things shown in the demo but they made the demo so boring to watch because nothing happens. But to have a character that emits fire particles and they change and move with him dynamically is impressive. The video I posted above shows some of the editing and features in action as he's doing it.

Also Now instead of having to go into the game world every time to run the simulation and see if you got it right you can run it and edit it in real time and it shows you in the pipelining what is stopping it from working properly, and then you can pop your character in on the fly to walk around the scene. You can also set where you character is and run the simulation and the move the camera freely independently of the character too. It's all very very streamlined and I can only imagine what proper devs think of it

Both looked amazing but I'd go with the Unreal 4 mostly because of how easy and efficient it looked to use. The particle and lighting effects looked very impressive.

Squre enix one wins. The UE4 one looks like current gen with slightly better lighting and particles. SE looked like actual next gen.

Not really a fair comparison. UE4 is a working software tool that will be used for games in the next few years, and is much more efficient. The square enix engine is a demo running on much higher end hardware, we're not going to see anything like it for a long time, and even then, it lacks the versatility of UE4. UE4 is what we will see next console generation. We wont see anything like the FF demo for a long time.

The lava is impresive. I am still trying to figure out how it was done.

Agreed. Unreal Engine 4 is tech that will actually be used. The Square Enix demo is kind of like those Nvidia and ATI demos, they look nice, but yeah, there won't be any actual games that look like that.

Yeah that lava and the fire particle effects at the end is ridiculous good. What I expected from next gen, very impressive. This will make for a more dynamic, believable world; while the SE demo is mindblowing ( I bet only less 5% of games released next gen will look as good as that) thats not taking into account if it will have the scope of the UE4 demo (huge open areas, which make it almost impossible) I don't think a game like the next Elder's Scrolls with the type of detailed displayed in the SE demo will come to fruition, but say a game like Doom3 its possible.

If SE had a walkthrough of their tech (like what GameTrailers showcased with UE4) instead of a movie with blurred action, that'd actually show me something, perhaps I can actually compare the two. As such, UE4 is much more practical at this point, considering Luminous will only be used with SE games.
