I think it was all of the above. That and for N64 games and games in general it was ahead of it's time.It launched with a rumble pack which brought Vibrations to the action. That and it had one of the coolest comercials ever.

Aside from it not being good I'm not sure.

I don't think I could ever consider this game as epic.

Going by the standards of 1997: The graphics, music, gameplay, and the rumble feature (first game to use this feature). It was really amazing for its time.

I think it was just all around a great game. The gameplay was very smooth and exciting, and yes it had good memorable quotes.

Well, TBH, I never thought the quotes were all that great until I saw them in a YTP and cracked up(I'm so ashamed for having laughed at one of those idiotic excuses for comedy...D''''=)...so I'd go with the game itself, that game got me pumped on Starfox. =P A shame none of the other games were any good IMO(Adventures was pretty much a generic adventure game with a baby tricreatops partner and two or three short, disappointing flight sections thrown in and Command...I just couldn't stand the "strategy" stuff and turns they've implemented...)...=/

Voice acting in general. It was pretty rare back then to hear voice acting on the N64.

I am currently trying to unlock expert mode, its so hard, because you miss one unit here, or there, you either have to retry, or do the whole thing again (I am very close, but is the hardest missions).

This game is epic, every time I play it, I feel closer to god.

"Annoying bird. I am the great Leon!" Yeah, probably the quotes. ...Nah, the game itself is fun too.

Hmmm...

The quotes- definitely the quotes... :P

It just wouldn't be the same without them... :(

Seriously though- as important as the quotes were... :P The gameplay and graphics bothplayed a major role as well.

Because it brought what no game had dared to delve into at that time, and that was the Boost. You had to use the Boost to get through or no dice.

Peppy-DO A BARREL ROLL

Wolf-WHAT THE HECK

Peppy-Maybe Slippy isnt a screw-up after all

Fox-check your G-diffuser

Pigma-that reward is as good as mine

Wolf-Your good,but i'm better!

Favourite quotes/\

The Gameplay was awesome for that time and the rumblepack was awesome and the music had some hits

but the gameplay was easily the best part of the game. With all these things put together it makes an incredibly epic game. STAR FOX 64

Haha, I've played this 6 times through in the last 2 days.

Its the entertainment value. Mainly when the characters talk, but also the awesome combat.

Only Con is that you can't use the Cockpit view whilst in All Range mode, which sucks.

The fact that I've never, ever gotten tired of playing it since its release. I've gone back and played it a lot in the past, and bought it on Wii VC a while back. I played it a lot. Beat it on every path and scenario I could. Yet I could still play it again and enjoy every second. If I go back to it in a year, I'll enjoy it even more. It doesn't seem to age.. or lose its appeal. It defies all videogame logic, which is why it's something special.

Thats the funny thing about N64 games they had all three, Nintendo's use the same music for their games thats why some OoT and Starfox sound similar. Gameplay were as good as it got and everyone remembers and loves the quotes, even if I only played the game once I would still remember the quotes to the game. Now what we need is a remake with an extra 50 planets, improved graphs and physics and a choice of whether you want to play as Starfox or Starwolf teams and there! we have the perfect Starfox game for Wii.

Aside from the fact that it introduced and included the Rumble Pack for the N64 controller, nothing else makes it stand out. I played it and I enjoyed the original SF on SNES far more, better gameplay and lasting appeal. The music was better on Snes as well, Koji Kondo made a wonderful score for the original game, Hajimi Wakai just could not fill the shoes of his predecessor with the music of SF64.
