The 3DS is around the corner, where does that leave the DS's legacy at?

DS is very close to approching PS2's sales of the most sold video game console ever. The DS has been a complete monster since it's been released sales and gaming wise. Of course the 3DS will have complete DS backwards compatability, but the DS hardware will fizzle out in the future. The DS is going to be going out with a bang, with the new genaration of Pokemon games, Okamiden, and not to mention the handful of great titles this year. Where does the DS rank among your legacy platforms?

I thought the 3DS was just another rehash of the DS with a slightly more powerful engine but only enough so that it can run the 3D. o-o Regardless, I liked the DS a lot, some really stupid stuff(*coughNintendogscough*) on it, but there was some really good(Mario Kart DS...=D)stuff too.

I'd put the DS right up there with the best of the best. Namely, the SNES and PS2. The DS just has such a huge library of good games. Shame that many never left Japan :(

The DS had an amazing library, and it is truly a great hand held. I hope to continue playing many great games on it, and I hope to see what the 3DS has on it.

the ds is amazing.. i always loved it.. i'm exited to buy it again now that their gonna be like $50 after the release of the 3ds.. I'm also gonna try to buy all the games released late into it's life asap because some of those games have the possibility of being expensive in the future..

3DS is considerably more powerful than the DS and has a lot of new features not just including 3D. Its the next gen handheld for Nintendo.

Surprisingly very high up there. The first year or two between the PSP and the DS was incredibly blurry, there were even times where I felt that Nintendo had finally met their match in handhelds. I'm not sure when it happened, but all I know is that I stopped caring about the DS, looked back a few years later and saw a great library that was still expanding. I may possibly pull the same thing with the 3DS where I stop caring for a few years to let the library build and see if the PSP2 is going to try and pull anything interesting.

Oh yeah, I agree that the 3DS line-up is looking amazing, but I have no idea when a lot of those games are coming out. According to this report:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6280046.html

We're going to be seeing 10 titles, and I'm sure there'll be a few more that are going to make it for launch. The rest of the titles are still up in the air and we still have a vague idea of how much the thing is going to cost. Pricing has always been a big thing for me when considering gaming devices, and I can live with waiting a while to see how each system turns out.

It doesn't leave it's Legacy anywhere. It's still a DS. It's just gotten alot more powerful.

If it were a totally new system that only used 1 screen or had totally different controls instead of a touch screen...then you can say the DS legacy is over.

It's shaped like a DS, has 2 screens like a DS, uses the bottom screen for touch controls like a DS and it's name is the 3...DS.

It's a DS.

Or the Next-Generation DS if youd rather refer to it as that.

The DS was a great handheld with innovative dual screens (I know it existed before, but they reintroduced it) and a touch screen, some great games and fast 3D graphics. But I was also a little disappointed by the graphics due to Nintendo's claims how DS will be like a "Super N64", but the matter of fact was that N64 was still better in some ways (it had smooth textures and expendable memory for example). I think DS will go in history as the perfect beginner's/sunday gamer's handheld console which was also used for "edutainment".

Some people don't seem to realize that the 3DS is an all-new system, not just a redesign. It's like going from GBC to GBA.

Its the 3DS, yes it very much similar to the DS, but since it uses upgraded hardware its a next gen platform. The DS line of portables are starting to fade and will eventually be a legacy platform.

Just because it uses upgraded hardware does not mean it's not a DS. To exclude it from the DS family makes no sense. Like I said, it has 2 screens, one for touch controls, and it's name still carries the DS name-sake.

Nobody said the GameBoy Advance wasn't a GameBoy just because it used new hardeware. It was the Next-Gen GameBoy. Same difference here, the 3DS is the Next-Gen DS.

I don't know of any other way to explain it. It's not like the leap from GBA too DS was. The 3DS still uses the core gameplay style of using the touch screen and face buttions to play games and Nintendo still gave it the DS branding calling it the 3DS.

Sorry if I sound rude I dont mean too. Ive just always hated how some people say the 3DS is a totally new console seprate from the DS line.

Yes I understand that it is a DS, but its the 3DS next gen platform. That means the DS will eventually be legacy. PS2 and PS1 are both playstations, yet soon after the PS2 was released the PS1 became legacy. Thats all I'm trying to say. Why Im making such a difference between the DS and 3DS is that they are different hardware and software wise, meaning that you cant play 3DS games on a DS due to technical limitations.

Oh, I see what you mean now. Yes thats right...it's the Next-Generation of the DS, like PS2 was in the Playstation family.

DS will not be considered "legacy" immediately, though. Even after the 3DS launches, I'd imagine the DS will remain relevant for quite some time. It will just be marketed in a different manner--the price will drop and the software will cater to the very very young, or the very very old. I always thought that was the point of the DS XL.
