I was thinking about cheats the other day, and how damn commonplace they are. I remember when cheat codes were something you wouldn't be able to guess in a million years, and you had to wait for your favourite games magazine to come out with it years after the game release.

May favourite all-time cheat has to be the master cheat for Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on the Nintendo 64. Not only could you not guess that cheat in a million years, in some cases you needed an accomplice in order to pull it off. It sort of goes like this:

Rename your profile as 'Wampa Stompa'

Pause the game at any time during a level and hold down the following buttons: Z, R, L, Left on the d-pad and all the C buttons. If you remember the good old N64 controller you may realise how taxing this is onit's own to pull off. Clumsy fingers will not do here. Whilst holding down these buttons you've now got to move the joystick either to the left or to the right halfway and hold it there for about a second waiting for a 'donk' noise. Release all the buttons and do it again this time holding the joystick halfway in the other direction. Repeat until the damn cheat menu comes up, then try to figure out how to use it with the shoulder buttons.

Back when I played this game I had no friends with any sort of interest in this cheat, so I remember having to move that damn joystick with my chin. I couldn't tell if it was halfway or not. I'd sit there for minutes sometimes in a sweat puddle waiting for the 'donk' noise.

Nowadays you just plug in the konami code and you're off...

The cheat that lets you play as Candy Suxx in GTA:Vice City. Because there's nothing funnier than a porn star shooting down helicopters.

I love the cheat structure in GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the N64. Earning them was very rewarding and added another way to play through each level after you've done so several times. Memorizing the code to turn invisible in GoldenEye multiplayer was pretty fun too

I think ABACABB ranks up there with the best ones ever.
That is from Mortal Kombat (the original)
A reference to the song by band Genesis, also system the game was on.

After that the code TOOLAZY for MX vs. ATV Unleashed that unlocks everything.... LOL

This is exacting what I thought about when I read your topic. I remember trying this for like 15 moinutes and finally gettting it to work. I had my little brother hold some of the buttons for me. My controller's joystock was also used a lot and this made it even harder. I eventually could do it pretty consistently though. Man, that game was fun now that i think about it.

:shock:oh crud!!! Just realized you're right, I will edit my post. Been way too long since I last used it. The last few times I did play Contra (or other Konami games that accept this code) I've challenged my self with the limited stock of lives.

Not much of a cheat, but I remember back in the Genesis days with the Mortal Kombats, logging all the fatalities, babalities, level fatalities and animalities, then writing them all down in the master moves list that me and my buddies were keeping.

Unlocking the Naboo Starfighter on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Completely insane that it was even in the game, since the game was released 6 months before the movie and no one had even seen these ships yet, not to mention the game had nothing to do with the movie outside of them both being Star Wars.

Appareantly, we can all agree that LucasArts puts in some awesome cheats.

I remember _Wampa Stompa_ I loved using the AT-ST and the stormtroopers/wampas.

Here's my list:

The cheats in TOCA on the PS were awesome: you could drive a pink cadillac and a shooting tank and blast the other cars away. And you could make the rain go up instead of down and swap the rain with cats and dogs (lol the cheat was like 'itsrainingcatsand dogs').

The high wheels cheat from Driver was awesome.

There was a cheat for Samurai Shodown 2 on the old Neo Geo, that was like: 'up, down, right, down, center'. I remember saying: 'Center? What the hell?!'

The cheat menu activation code in Alien Trilogy: 1G0TP1NK8C1DB00TS0N ('I got pink acid boots on!')

In one of the Worms or Earthworm Jim games on the SNES (can't remember) if you read all the passwords in a row they formed a story.

Like this:

level1: onceupon
level2: atimethere
level3: wasakingdom
