oh man I saw this thread and had to post something lol. Id say Shenmue (the first one), although it probally didnt contribute much to the industry apart from show what the dreamcast was capable of, it did however have a charm many other games were lacking at that point.

And talk about content!

So id say it was one of the best games on the format, but didnt do anything radical on the to shape the industry... saying that though, I dont think anything on the dreamcast did anything of the sort to be honest.

Correct me if im wrong ofc.

Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, and one other game. I can't think of the name, it was a fighter.

Shenmue was the most experimental game on the platform, Enjoyable and well executed QTE's(which are derided by most dev co's today, but, when done right, are just as compelling as any other part of the game, ie,WET, SW:TFU, RE4 all benefitted from quality QTE's) a compelling narative but total freedom to NOT explore the story and do other things. And a complex and rigid fighting engine all combined to make an astounding game. the Sequal only refined these motifs, but itis certainly a ground breaking game.

And how can anyone not mention Phantasy Star Online... First online console RPG... it's the reason I playWoW now, Not only did it perform what pc's had been doing fora while on console uniquely, with the pre-made transalation text so you could comfortably talk and play with gamers from all over the world, but it did it well, over a 33k dial upmodem.long before broadband and having this level of quality and almost lag free gaming at the time was unheard of. An incredible achievement on the platform. And one that is still savoured and enjoyed by die hards around the world using their own servers... fantastic!

And possibly the most sublime, complete, original and downright brilliant racer ever created. Metropolis Street Racer. It's not how fast you drive, but how you drive fast has changed how gamers think about racing games. no longer content with just getting round circuits as fast as possible, bouncing from opponants and railings just to get the lead, you had to learn to race properly... It certainly made me a better in game racer than any other game I can mention. The entire Project Gotham series is really MSR+. The Kudos mechanic was a genius stroke. no longerwere you content with just winning, but how stylishly you won. Brilliance! (though, the lights could be a little brighter in the night sections if I'm honest! :P )

Finally, and I mean this sincerely, Skies of Arcadia... Epic RPG that, while it didn't do anything especially different at the time. it stands out today as a unique title that is lengthy, compelling, challenging and colourful. the story is more than grand. it's scale is as epic as any Final Fantasy and it's filled with memorable events and full of adventure.

honorable mentions go to Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 : 3rd Strike, Bangai-o!and Ikaruga.

Try to stick to first party games, No matter how cheap and tempting third party games might be.

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2

Daytona USA

House of the Dead 2

Shenmue

Sega Rally

Sega GT

Sega Bass Fishing

ChuCHu Rocket

Crazy Taxi 1 & 2

Virtua Tennis 1 & 2

to name a few

Third party usually involved REALLY GENERIC shovel ware or bad ports. Some ports were good though, with updated graphics.

A few wernt bad though:

Worms 2

Blur Stinger

Resident Evil Code Veronica

Metropolis Street Racer

Vigilante 8 2

to name a few

Metropolis Street Racer (can be counted as first party as sega and Bizzare creations were partners for a long time... much like how Bizzare and MS were)

Vigilante 8 2

And, Blue Stinger is a bit mad... awkward from time to time, but... not bad... Also, Get Trick Style... bit out dated now, but still heaps of fun and blisteringly challenging!

Alone in the Dark on the DC was fantastic and set a high standard for the horror-survival genre.

the port to the PS2 was disappointing.
