@SilverBlade1805: Final Fantasy 4 is a great one to start with. Great story, great mechanics, and it's not too hard to figure out. Final Fantasy 6 is a bit more refined, however, so either of those two would work.
XIII does a really good job of introducing you to all the jargon that those games are saddled with. I rarely used magic in a Final Fantasy game until XIII because the older games make magic too costly to use, while XIII encourages experimentation and actually tells you what the spells and items do. The gameplay itself bares little resemblance to the rest of the series, but it's a ton of fun and might be a good introduction to fundamental aspects of the series.
After that, my favorite is VI. It holds up better than the rudimentary 3D visuals of VII-IX. X is great, too, and easily accessible in HD if you have a Vita or PS3.
