I go through these playing/collecting phases and I am currently rediscovering the magic of the Sega Genesis. It was my first console back when I was 5 and I have some excellent memories of that console and it's gaming library. As a kid, my favorite game's on this console were Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Super Street Fighter II, Joe and Mac, Wolfchild, and Aero the Acrobat. While these titles aren't the most acclaimed on Genesis, I remember enjoying them the most. I still enjoy these games greatly, but have also discovered great games like MUSHA, Contra Hardcorps, Chika Chika Boys, Ranger X, and the Valis series. But overall, I'd say the following are the top 5 genesis games I have played:

1. Sonic 3 (still holds up as my favorite title on the Genesis)

2. MUSHA (I was absolutely shocked by how fun this game is, could possibly be my favorite SHMUP)

3. Castlevania: Bloodlines

4. Super Street Fighter II

5. The Flintstones (incredibly underrated platformer by Taito)

Pier Solar was a ressurection project I guess, though maybe you could call it "homebrew"? I'm not really sure how exactly to categorize it, but it is a more recent release made after the Genesis lifespan, (in a similar vein as other rpg projects like "The Beggar Prince", "Star Odyssey" and "Legend of Wukong")

regardless, "Pier Solar" is easily the best Genesis RPG in my personal opinion.
(Legend of Wukong is great aswell, while Beggar Prince and Star Odyssey are decent, but not nearly as good)

The Genesis is my favorite platform, so it's kind of hard for me to make a list without feeling like I'm leaving some games out, but I'll try.

1. Streets of Rage 2 - My favorite game of all time, and for good reason. It has it all: gameplay, music, level design, difficulty, atmosphere, and the best co-op experience in any videogame, period.

2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles - The pinnacle of platformers to me, and it has my favorite video game soundtrack.

3. Sonic 2 - Pure platforming bliss, and it was the first Genesis game I ever got along with SOR2.

4. Streets of Rage 3 - Terrific game, and is head and shoulders above any other beat 'em up aside from its predecessor.

5. Sonic 1 - The first time I played it, I knew I had to get a Genesis.

6. M.U.S.H.A - This game pretty much has changed my entire stance on SHMUPS. I used to hate this genre, but now I've come to really enjoy them, and M.U.S.H.A is easily my favorite.

7. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition - My favorite fighter of all time, and I much prefer it over the SNES version(s).

8. Batman: The Video Game - Until the Arkham games came out, I pretty much viewed this one as the best Batman game ever.

9. Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV - This game just screams badass, and especially because of the soundtrack.

10. Shinobi III: Return of the NinjaMaster - Like I wrote in another thread, you just can't top a surfing ninja slashing mechs with awesome music playing in the background.

YES! I love the soundtrack to this game as well. My favorite tracks are the ending theme (which supposedly inspired the Michael Jackson song Strangers in Moscow) and the Marble Gardens theme. Damn I love that soundtrack!

I loved the port of "DOOM" for the 32x. LOOOOOVED it.

:P

The only problem was playing all the way to level 15, and then getting killed and having to go aaaallllll the way BACK to the beginning... I still joke aobut it with a former roommate who was living with me in those days...

Not just the ending, but pretty much all the music in the Sonic 3 half is Michael Jackson's work (supposedly). The most common story told is he did the soundtrack, but in the end wasn't pleased with how they came out, so he didn't want to be credited. I've always been a big Michael Jackson fan, so it's no surprise that I love Sonic 3's music so much. :P

1. Virtua Racing Thy remember being amazed when I first played it on my 32X, and I hear it's the best version at the time as well. Wonderful 3D graphics which I had never experienced on consoles before. Great soundtrack as well, short, but fit in way too well to complain. 2.Tempo was the first truly alive and full featured looking platform game which followed me getting to like the genre more and getting games in these genres when i got my Playstation and N64 at the time. Nothing looked like it at the time. 3.Zaxxon 2000 was a brilliant shooter with graphics that blew me away and very simple but addicting gameplay. 4.Doom the real Doom for video game consoles. It played well and I think it was the best version on machines at the time 5.Virtua Fighter the first 3D fighter I had played at the time, and thy considered it a game unmatched until a bit later. After this I moved on from the Genesis 32x and stopped trying to find games for it. With 11 games, this one peaked the Genesis for me and prepared me for more 3D machines like my mistake, the 3DO, the Playstation, and N64. Just recently I got a Saturn and I heard there are even more amazing versions of Vitrua Racing and Virtua Fighter on it so I was mistaken about wondering if one was worth owning.

Of course the SEGA dream team of Sonic, SOR and Golden Axe but games that normally don't get a mention and are equally as good are Beyond Oasis, Aladdin, Taz Escape from Mars, Ristar and Alien Storm.

I played hundreds of Genesis games, the ones I remember loving are: (in no specific order).

True Lies

Gargoyles

Scooby doo mysteries (a Monkey island clon, extremely good to me back in the day).

Contra Hard cops

Batman & Robin (the one you had to kill Harley, Joker, 2 faces, the mad hatter and then I believe it was mr freeze, 3 levels per boss, never saw anyone mentioning this game, ever. Graphics were like a fake 3D, it was a 2D platformer cooperative.)

One with Mickey mouse where you went over the majority of Mickey movies, starting with a black n white one.

MK II

Super Street Fighter 2.

Tiny toons, all stars.

The lion king

Earthworm Jim I & II

Vectorman 2?

Sonic n Knuckles

Gunstar Heroes is a phenomenal title that I believe is my absolute favorite of the Genesis.

Genesis had some other stellar titles, but none have captivated me like Gunstar Heroes. I can play that game at any point in time and enjoy it.

Sonic 3&K truly is an amazing platformer. The level design, the length of levels, special stages, soundtrack and graphics were all top knotch. I even thought the story was pretty good for a pure platformer.
