What do you guys think is the best story and why?
Surprisingly I think KOTOR 2 has the best story it was very deep and almost philosophical especially after you defeat a certain sith lord and hear her death speech.

I actually thought the story in the first KOTOR was better, regardless both are amazing. What do you guys think is the best story and why?

This Gen hasn't been great story wise. From what I've played, FFXIII, LO & Braid were cool, but nothing spectacular. Mass Effect, while an amazing game, doesn't have an amazing story. Grim Fandango was pretty awesome. To be honest, I can't think of a game with an absolutely stellar story.

I actually thought the story in the first KOTOR was better, regardless both are amazing. Well KOTOR' s story was cool and all but it' s really just your basic stop the Sith from ruling the galaxy sort of thing, even with the twist it' s still not all that special.Mass Effect 1 & 2. Metal Gear Solid 3 & 4. I'm surprised nobody has mention MGS yet. Alot of people think Shadow of Colossus is great. I myself thought Heavy Rain was really good storywise. Its quick time event's really makes the game have a more immersive story.
KoTOR 1 had a great twist but otherwise the story was pretty average. KoTOR 2 was far superior and the game, in general, was more memorable. It's difficult to pick one game that has THE BEST story. So I'm going to say this and I'm surprise I'm the first to throw it out.
Heavy Rain is the game that tells its story the best. It may not be the greatest story ever told in a game but it tells it the best.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, a mediocre game with a stellar story. Based on the 19(60?) award winning short story.
Silent Hill 2, for being the only game to nail a Lynchian moodthat I know of.
Hm, I very much enjoyed FF7's story, as well as Septerra Core and Devil May Cry 1's story. Max Payne for me was probably the most movng in terms of storyline. It had everything, revenge, love, hope, despair and all brilliantly put into a film noir setting. Genius.
Its not one of those games that was really heavily praised for regarded for its story, nor was the story a big part of its experience, but when I think of the story of Prince of Persia, The Sands of Time, and how it was executed, and the way that it ended, I get a big ol' smile on my face.
So that's mine.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is one of the best videogame stories in the past decade to be released. There is really no limit to how much praise I can give to this game's narrative and how it sucks you in. If you have an Xbox/PC/(or 360 because it's backwards compatible)... please give this game a try if you're looking for a good story.
I really enjoyed Jade Empire. The setting and story in that game were awesome IMO. One of my all time favorite gaming experiences :)
Dead Space, it was so intriguing, and I was completely hooked throughout.
Bioshock - My favourite game world Rapture holds a fantastic, dark and compelling story with a memorable plot twist :)
With the exception of Bioshock 1, not a single game this generation delivered a compelling narrative. Every game nowadays just spills over into the next just so the developer can drag it into a trilogy. Its a cheap tactic and I can't stand it. Recent offends include, Assassins Creed, Gears of War, and Mass Effect, which actually manages to complete the arc and leave you satisfied.
But I'd say the older generation is the ones that had the greatest plots. These include: Final Fantasy 7,9,10, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid 1. Developers should avoid cliffhangers and still deliver a gripping game. Uncharted is a perfect example of a story that concluded but the sequel is clearly anticipated.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 are the best I've played, but I have to give a special nod to GTA4. Niko Bellic > Commander Shepard
IMO
Uncharted 1 and 2.
At points they are both a bit Disney in their storyline especially the romance angles and it is hard to imagine continuous mistakes being made by "experts", but these two games kept me engaged like few others have recently.
Games like Infamous and Prototype are some of the most fun games I have ever played, but their storylines are terrible. Then Halo and Gears of War Resistance and Killzone 2 plus the Call of Duty series are awesome games, but just because of action and not because of storyline. BC2 had a terrible storyline, but it is the best FPS I have played in awhile.
Storyline wise you can't go wrong with any MGS game although MGS4 was the worst IMO. It isn't bad, but MGS 1 and 2 set a standard so high that it is hard to equal them. I can't really comment on older games because it has been so long. I know that certain Zelda games kept my attention and GTA games have always had great storylines. GTA IV was amazing, but I think that the later episodes suffered storyline wise. The Lost and Damned could've been amazing, but they made it Johnny too Jax in Sons of Anarchy. If you are in a biker gang you probably relish blowing stuff up instead of want to constantly argue with your boss about it. If they had made it more of a power struggle based on money or something else instead of conscience I think it would've been a truly great story. However, GTA IV and the subsequent DLC was probably the best game of this Gen right behind MGS4. I don't get all the complaining about lack of weapons and gimmicks. GTA IV was just as revolutionary as GTA III just in more subtle ways.
KOTOR 2? You've got to be joking right? It was an absolute fail. Simply didn't add up. KOTOR 1 has to be the best story. KOTOR 2 was absolutely terrible. What do you guys think is the best story and why?
