I was just thinking then, what ifthere was anew company that came along and made a new console? Or maybe if Sony or Microsoft, etc brought out a new console. What would it look like? What would it feature?

The way consoles are evolving is embarrassing to be honest. May be some of you dont know, but the graphics cards market is so advance and powerful. Sony and MS are lagging really bad.

Graphics aren't everything, there's also gameplay, innovation, etc. Besides new games with great graphics can overload slightly older computers unless you upgrade, none of that with consoles, not everyone is made of money. Maybe in the future there will be a console able to play every kind of game like the motion sensing games that the Wii is all about and RTS/MMORPGs that PCs excel in, with all the comfort of a 360 or PS3. Y'know, something for everyone. All on a big, big screen.

that would be wonderful. Im not made of money either, on the contrary im so cheap with this kind of stuff because I have much higher priorities. But still, a mid-range GPU is more than enough to play a lot of games with great visuals.

Given how few games push the hardware and how few own cutting edge hardware, most PC gamers don't know it either.

Graphics, Gameplay, Interactivity, Voice Acting, MOCAP, and Story etc. in games are all evolving very rapidly but Companys and Publishers are getting more greedy as gaming gets more popular. Its becoming like everything else in the world and at the end of the day it's not about the people, it's about the nice fat paycheck at the end of the project. Not all Company's and publishers are like that but eventually most that aren't will be eventually. It's really sad but I believe If we keep going in the direction we are going gaming is gonna become not so fun anymore. DLC is nice right now but It might end up ruining what we all love about gaming including motion control. Just a theory or it could make it better. Problem is you won't actually know untill it happens. Maybe it already is happening and only few are realizing it.

this gen all 3 are going to try and eek it out as long as they can. MS and sony have lost tons of money from the earlier years of their consoles this gen and they need to get it back. releasing a new console is a very expensive thing to do. ninty of course will want to keep the wii ticking over as long as possible also since it prints money for them (weve all seen the gif :P). as for 3rd parties....they would be happy to sit at this point for a long long time. the devs are comfortable with the hardware (except for the wii...only about 6 devs know how to make the most of that which is a shame). the tech is in place...its well tested and supported and costs for the tech side of things can start to relax. there not much more that can be eeked out of the consoles so the tech race is essentially over for now. with those worries gone they can focus on making better games and, as the recession begines to disipate, they may be more open to more risk taking. dont bother trying to compare where the consoles are to where the PC is....that kind of thinking is what caused half the problems in the first place this gen. consoles should not aim to be PCs....its pointless and counter productive. consoles should eb all about maximising the bang per buck in the areas that count for games.

Wear you wear a helmet and you are literally "in the game" Think about it. We alrady have motion sensing, and Natal could be a huge Hit/Fail. So I believe that this isn't too far away.

I see big gaming moving more into tepid rehashes of the tried and true FPS model for the "Hardcore" crowd, when in reality, it becomes more and more of a bizarre rpg hybrid that awards time played just enough for there to be a noticable disparity, but not enough for the new players to jump ship. I see casual gaming devolving even further, think Wii Fit, or Cooking Mama, but endorsed by Hulk Hogan or Martha Stewart. More realism, more simulation, less gaming. For indie games, I see them completely flushed out of consoles, but thriving on the computer alone, the market for them will expand, but they will be pushed further out of the public eye. Consoles will ultimately develope into an amalgation of peripherals, which may or may not enhance the experience.

You may or may not be a fanboy, but Sonys recent partnership with Google to produce a new line of televisions could surely point in that direction. Some things I'd like to see(in reason):

-obviously blu ray.

-full psx, ps2, psp compatibility. These would function through an itunesesque setup, where if you physically own the disc, you could import the game to the either the internal hard drive, or one connected trhough usb. I don't care for drm, but it would be somewhat necessary so one game wouldn't get downloaded unto 2000 ps4s.

I don't think new hardware is needed. Most developers aren't pushing the current hardware and those that are all say they can push it a lot farther. One of the big things holding back game development is cost (vs profit). Rolling out a more powerful (and thus more expensive) system with a userbase a tiny fraction of the userbase of current systems would lessen profitability in the short and medium terms. What Sony and MS need to do is what they are doing, namely, slashing the costs of hardware and passing the savings on to consumers. Once the full versions of the PS3 and X360 are at $150 or less and game developers are bumping up against tech restrictions, then it will be time for new hardware.

That's all true, but I think Nintendo is preparing a new console release. I think the announcement will be just after the Move/Natal play their cards, and will depend on the success of those. If wii sales are already declining, and those two devices further slump the wii, it only makes sense to show where nintendo is heading. It would actually be in nintendos favor if those two devices were successful, because it would force sony/ms to support their respective formats for at least another year or two. If move/natal fail, then wouldn't ms/sony be forced to reveal something? Or is it wise to let nintendo, the leading brand at the moment, get a huge head start on a user base.

Just look at the history of consoles.

Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft dominate the market. No serious developers will make a good game for another console besides PC.

Bandai & Apple tried to put one out during PS1 and N64, it failed.

Sega put out the DC during PS2, it failed.

Apple today might have a chance though.
