deadly Premonition

Francis York Morgan

I'm really only about 7 hours in. I'm loving every moment of it. I didn't really know what to expect when I bought it. I only heard that it was quirky and didn't take itself too seriously. My expectations weren't really that high and I know the game didn't come out with a lot of fanfare. I actually was not aware of it until a friend mentioned it to me. I saw it on sale on Amazon for only $14.99 and I thought to myself, "What is there to lose?" so I purchased it.

I am very glad I did. This game brings in some very interesting characters, most notably the main character. The graphics aren't all that but oddly enough that adds to the charm of this game. I also find myself laughing at the one-liners, corny jokes and rough animations. The gameplay, though kind of rough, is reminiscent of Resident Evil 4 which is fine but when it all comes down to it the game gives me a unique experience as a whole. I don't want to really give to much away as far story and characters because I want those that have any small amount of interest in this game to give it a try.

Want an idea of what this game is? See simple equation below.

Think: heavy rain+ shenmue+ gta IV+ res 4+ twin peaks = deadly premonition

Even at its release price $19.99 it is a steal. I am glad I picked up the game but moreover I am glad it is providing me with a great gaming experience I just did not expect.

I'm not looking for this to become a Deadly Premonition thread but more about you guys having any games that you just never expected to be a great experience but delivered in a unique way. I'm curious to hear if others have so that I may try them out myself. I, and I am sure many others, would love to hear about it.

Umm, I would think for me it was probably God Hand. Sure I bought it, but I didn't think I would love it as much as I did. It was truly great. It surprised me, for sure.

Oh God Hand was awesome. Definitely a unique surprise. I played that game to death. A lot of charm was in that game and I still look back fondly on it. Every now and then I think to go back and play it. The challenge was tough but very rewarding. I think it's a must have for all those that like beat 'em ups.

Wii Sports Resort. There's a strong case there for simple, yet effective gameplay with excellent control in the midst of complicated games.

Wii Sports? I would think that simple, yet effective gameplay is what is expected when first experiencing the game anyways. Nothing really surprising about it, at least that is what I got from it when I first played it. It was a lot of fun with a group of people but it wasn't something I was completely blind-sided with like some other games I had been surprised with.

Killer7 comes to mind. I had no idea what to expect, and still have no idea what it was that I played, but I think I might have loved every minute of it. Oh, and Silent Storm. I bought it for $2, and it kicked huge amounts of butt.

That's pretty much the tagline to my review :D. And don't worry, I don't use that for every 3 out of 5 games I play. I mean it. high five, sir!

mine has top be mirrors edge. i picked it up 2nd hand around a year after its release. Its probably one of my favorite games out there now. i loved everything from the art style to the way it plays so fluidly once you get the hang of the controls. A sequel is in the works now aswell so im a happy bunny :)

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it due to me being influenced by the general idea that sophistication in a game is proportional to enjoyment.

I'd also say God Hand, as well as Earth Defense Force 2017. I picked both up out of the bargain bin when I was bored and had nothing else I wanted to play and wound up having a great time with each game. God Hand was awesome and made me laugh my ass off, and EDF nails the B-movie feel and is the very definition of mindless fun. I was surprised with Deadly Premonition too; didn't like it quite as much as those other two games but it was entertaining much of the time. And yeah York is a terrific main character.

This gen Heavy Rain. I went in expecting a disaster of a game and came out experiencing one of the most unique and compelling games of the generation. I didnt think Dead Space was going to be any good either and it still stands as the best horror video game ever made.

Heavy Rain so far. I was burned by Fahrenheit (yeah, bad pun, lol), but I still wanted to experience this one and show some support for a game that tries to do things a bit differently. Fortunately, the game delivered a good ride, along with a couple of the most tense sequences I've ever experienced in a videogame.

The Saboteur... I didn't get it till the price came down, but after seeing that you actually can use stealth most of the time, I love it... more than the new Splinter Cell, which is supposed to be a stealth title. I got it used at GS for $17.

I never head into a game, anything, with expectations. But there is a difference between expectations and knowledge, and hadn't any knowledge about both KOTOR and a game called "Scrapland" when I bought them. Say what you will about the second game, it is one of my favourites.

Dead Space. I was interested in it and bought it on a whim and it became one of my favorites I've played this gen. Great gameplay, gorgeous scenes, good play time, and a great atmosphere... what's not to love?

I have three all for psx:

3- Front Mission 3: awesome game and best in series, never loved robots on games but this one's brilliant.

2- Monster Rancher 2: get in the skin of a monster breeder, but here you'll care for your monster as it was your real pet.

1- Vagrant Story: incredible, i didn't expect a thing about this one but it's just so great and fun. Awesome designs here.
