Not in this generation of gaming have i experienced such a great success for the gaming industry. So many games have and have yet to be released this year, that this time will have to stand up to the crowd.
In previous years we have seen games such as RDR, Mass Effect 2, Fallout3, Golden Eye etc, that have had little, yet no competitors. All in all not many hard choices to be made. And only a few games in those years have lived up to the hype and the glory of taking that crown. Any form of media whether it be the British Academy, gamespot or any source of gaming magazine, always had a total of three choices to make to choose their GOTY.
But this time everyone involved in handing out that award will have to think a little harder.
This year controversy and debate will be held closer to heart. As everyone's favourite games get played into the hands of the media. Critics beware.
So Far our contenders
Portal 2.
A game we are all familiar with. Being portals successor you expected great things from this game. A dynamic well created world of mind boggling experience. Never have i come across a game like portal. It indulges you in a gaming sense you have never experienced before. Weird and wonderful, portal applies to pretty much all types of gamers. It captures everything and more from the first one we hoped to expect in the second. And we got it. More artistic nature, thought and gameplay has been implemented into the sequel. Now you have a choice of Co-op and single player. As if playing with a friend or part of the family next to you wasn't enough. Now you are able to enjoy that excitement of working together as a team in the game itself. Both modes of gameplay are set in different stories. So as not to bore you into playing the same game but just with someone else. The single player story alone is filled with suspense, thrills and complete mystery. When it comes to portal 2s story you expect nothing. Which is why it makes the game so great. You simply have no idea what is to come. It's what makes the game so weird and wonderful. The gameplay is absolutely outstanding. It's not just venture from one room to the next. You have to use your brain in getting there. But the best thing about it is, by using your brain and just by simply playing portal there is excitement all around you. There is never a dull moment in progressing, with so much weird and wacky ways of doing so. It's like albert Einstein decided one day to create a world of his own. A world we don't truly understand.

L.A Noire
In my opinion this is rockstars way of moulding aspects from heavy rain and the grand theft auto series into one. And it works. From start to finish you feel as if you are Cole phelps. Throughout the game you will experience so many ways in what makes it a Noire. From murder to mystery, to the simple street crime. 1940's L.A has never really been seen throughout the eyes of us as gamers. And it's never looked so good. In such an outstanding transition we are able to see L.A in such great detail. You are the controller of the games progression. You don't just simply sit back and enjoy the ride. You are person that steers it. Choices throughout the game will affect your progress in good or bad. Each crime solving mystery is unique. You are able to feel what it's like rather than watch the big screen. In doing so there is so much attention to detail. From the course you take, evidence you collect, interrogation to just simply writing down on a notepad. The story splits in two. One part is all about the murder mystery side of a noire. The other is Cole Phelps personal story which is revolves around conspiracy. Yet another way to play the part in a noire. By playing these parts the outcome of the game is given to you in great form. Levels within the game diffrentiate as do the circumstances. For me why couldn't this be a contender. It has everything it needs to become the GOTY. A great story, great gameplay and a variety of content. However in my opinion it could so easily sit on the sideline. No matter how great L.A Noires gameplay is. You seem to max it out doing the same routine over and over again which tends to get boring. The story midway seems rushed and not well written. And the DLC is completely useless. For how much you pay for it you expect a little more than 30 minutes of added gameplay. However by creating the DLC it just adds to the creation of a noire in again a variety of ways.

Batman Arkham City
Unfortunately i am yet to play this game so i really don't know much about it. What i do know is it captures the same ethic as batman arkham asylum. Which we all know was a fantastic game. Not only now confined to the levels creation. It has become an open world for all to explore. From what I've seen the developers have captured the weird, the wonderful and freakish dark nature of the Gotham slums under complete lockdown. New gadgets and technology the batman will use becomes a creation beyond the likes of the first one. Batman Arkham asylum never lacked story or in game content. And Arkham city will follow the same routine and make it better. So far this game has taken the helm towards becoming the GOTY.

Gears of War 3
I have nothing decent to say about any of these games. Despite in my opinion being an overrated disaster. With very little originality, character development and having a mock up action storyline. It still doesn't stop it from becoming a contender. Just like its predecessors, it's audience will back up on it. And by doing so critics won't help themselves by calling this a masterpiece due to its sales figures. What has this generation come to i don't know. But again still very much alive in the realm of the GOTY.

Battlefield 3
No game like BF has pushed its way closer to the call of duty franchise. Game by game BF defies the meaning of enjoyment compared to that of cod. The two games are similar to each other. Yet up till now it's been very hard for the BF franchise to contend on the same scale. Yet this year we could have a winner. BF3s main factor for taking the helm is not so much its singleplayer status. But the introduction to a new game engine and an entirely new way of experiencing the joys of modern warfare. What cod lacks BF3 has picked up on. The atmosphere of engaging in battle with companions or against others is what separates this from the rest. It actually feels like a full blown war. It's not just run and gun, or sit and wait. BF3 forces you to participate and do it well. There is never an easy chance for the good gamer to rack up his kills. The introduction of fighter jets is an added bonus you wouldn't expect from games like BF3. It's something you have dreamed of getting in a game like it but have never got. Now you have it, now you have more fun. While your foes fight on the ground there is battle in the air. Which again adds more to the atmosphere of the game improving on it. For so long players have wanted to indulge in this kind of gameplay. It gets annoying for the gamer that isn't quite an expert at games of the like. Yet in this everyone is a target and there is no easy way out. BF always falls at the single player. It's always to cheesy, linear and nothing exciting comes out of it. When exiting multiplayer and entering the other world BF has to offer you can always see the difference. Attention to detail is forgotten about. There is no character development. It's basically get from point A to B. It feels like a job completing it. However i am yet to play BF3's single player so i have no idea what it's like. But me missing out on that is the main reason why CoD may still reign supreme. With call of duty they focus on multiplayer but never forget the single player. Both elements of the game are given to the player well. Where CoD hypes its single player, BF3 hasn't. Its main priority is multiplayer. And that's not exactly a bad thing. But you can't rear away from what a game should be all about. Saying that BF3s single player could be equally as good. And its multiplayer alone is the reason why most players by both franchises. And to be honest when it comes down to these games, that's what really matters the most.

As much as I'd like to be contenders, the games i'm about to mention just in my opinion will be over shadowed by what is to follow. These games do not lack anything. But Critics won't see past it. That some of these games should simply be participants for the GOTY award, but won't be.
What should of been Contenders
Dead Space 2
I'm not quite sure if this falls under the category this year as it was so close to those awards held last year. In spite of this being the right thing to do it should participate in this year's GOTY as it was released in the year 2011. Not very often do we come across games like dead space. Survival horror in games have been played out to their max, and it's a beautiful site to see those games that try hard to re live the revolution. Probably in my opinion this game is the most underrated of them all. As time goes by people will forget about it. Dead space lives through the popular game Resident Evil 4. Without it, there simply would be no dead space at all. Everything needed from a survival horror is implemented into dead space well. The creation of the enemies to the atmospheric fear of playing the game is there to. Scary for some but not most, the game tends to lack shock horror. There isn't really a moment with in the game that makes you jump out of your skin. However Dead space 2 grabs you right from the start, with its scale of fright. It immerses you with in its well written storyline filled with everything it needs to fit into its genre. This time as the player you take a step closer to the character Isaac Clarke, which opens up an entire range of things that we are yet to find out and improves on it, making it an entirely different experience. Great gameplay and mechanics, used in the exact same way as its predecessor. Thrilling and full of suspense all the way through. Dead space 2 lacks neither fun or variety and has all the formulas to it that should bring it into range of the GOTY. The only reason it doesn't contend is because games like these, no matter how good, they always tend to be forgotten about.
Crysis 2
Knowing how the first crysis achieved so much with in the gaming industry, it was hard for the second to pull it off. Unfortunately no matter how hard the developers tried, they knew themselves that this sequel simply would not contend to its first. Crysis 1 basically wrote the book on how a next generation game should be played and seen through the gamer. However, crysis 2 did pick up a lot from its father. Crysis 2s main successful factor is the way in which you play the game. It opens up so many possibilities of achieving anything you want to do. Whether it be blasting your way through hordes of enemies. Or adapt to your surroundings and become invisible. The environment around you isn't just there to look at. You can use it to your advantage. The detail to New York City hasn't been done quite like it has in crysis 2. The visual effects are absolutely out of this world. And to capture such a highlight in a concrete jungle is hard. There isn't much choice to enhance Crysis 2s capabilities of becoming visually outstanding, yet it manages to pull it off. The gameplay is excellent, top notch. The only bad thing about it is the A.I. It doesn't really give you much excitement out of becoming a stealthy assassin. The A.I seems to find exactly where you are, and you only have to fart and the enemies will catch on to you. So that experience doesn't exactly define its nature of choice, because you end up going all gun hoe anyway. The story yet simple is written down in a perspective that it's not great, but it's not bad either. The main thing for me is the attention to detail when it comes down to your character. In many games like it where the person your playing doesn't talk. You have the sense of more control over the character and you feel as if you're a part of him or her. You're not just playing the game, you're living it. Again the reason that it won't contend but should, Is because it doesn't necessarily lack anything, it just doesn't capture as much fun and enjoyment as you got from the first. In this generation GOTY demands improvement. And Crysis 2 just didn't do that.
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Surprisingly it's hard to understand why this won't become a contender. But I'll get onto that later. Deus ex HR in my mind is a game that only comes once in a decade if not at all. The cyberpunk genre of gaming is rarely ever explored. And in my mind this is the best genre to capture a next generation game. Games like perfect dark are re lived through Deus Ex HR. The experience of playing this game is very similar to that of metal gear solid. MGS is by far one the best games out there and it is a very, very difficult process to capture it just right. Yet HR pulls it off and pulls it off well. The story with in HR may seem complicated and difficult to understand, but once you wade your way through the game it becomes clearer. The gameplay is magnificent. Capturing stealth elements from mgs and the ability to use upgrades to your advantage, captured from games such as Crysis 2. HR lacks purely nothing. A range of options to choose from again similar to that of crysis 2, but more engaged and played out better. Become a stealthy assassin or raving gun driven lunatic (Keep an eye on your ammo mind.) To the option of your route you choose that fits into the same ways of play. The combat system is highly innovative. Again capturing the essence of both FPS and 3rd person moulded into one and other. By doing this it opens up a different way of playing the game i have yet to see myself. Very much like Resident evil 4. Maybe not so much an impact but games in the future will recognise this effort and use it themselves. HR's graphical design and artistic nature is supreme. The world you play in has a base of originality and homage to games like mgs. From the enemies you will encounter to the surroundings you progress through, there is no grey area. The only thing i have a problem with is its characters. You play Adam Jenson. He is nothing but there, he is just the character you play and nothing else. There is no emotional grasp to him. Perhaps a side mission which explains more about him which can easily be missed out, but that's as far as it goes. Again with characters like Megan reed, they just appear to be there for the sake of being there. She may play a big part in the ending but throughout the progression of the game she is forgotten about. The only good characters they have conjured up from this game in particular is Hugh Darrow and tong. Darrow being the menacing mystery behind the whole point of the game, his accent helps him appear to be a smart and cunning man, much like in james bond films. And Tong being the shady character that lies in the darkness. The character development to HR is its main downfall. Unlike the original deus ex games we don't quite feel the excitement and thrill of the story, which is driven by people like JC Denton. The originality and the difference between the franchise may not be major. But it's enough to show you that deus ex HR improved on nothing but gameplay. With games like this you always need a superb story and originality. Something that it didn't give us. And for the written rule. If it's not an improvement, then it's not a main contender for the GOTY awards. Which is a shame because it is up there with the rest of them.
