What is a level/ game that creeped you out when you really didn't think it would? Here's my list.

Super Mario 64, the Boo's Mansion level. I think the music did it, for the most part.

Luigi's mansion. I actually thought that a few of the human's ghosts were fairly creepy.

Now, on a more serious note.

Shalebridge Cradle from Thief Deadly Shadows. Just play it and you'll see what I mean.

Shadow Temple/ Bottom of the Wellfrom LoZ: OoT. Despite the aged graphics, the subject matter was fairly intense and there were some really creepy moments. (Dead Hand, anyone?) The creepiest part was in the Shadow Temple when you fought the invisible FloorMaster. The blood in the middle of the room freaked me out.

That...level...traumatized me. The movement of those inmates was just...something else. That whole game is kind of scary if you think about it...

I agree. The whole series is actually scary in it's own right. The haunted levels are extremly creepy and the other levels are scary in the " oh my god I need to run for my life from these guys" (although less so in Deadly Shadows). I think that this level is worth playing the game alone, but it's still a very good stealth game.

That makes perfect sense. After all, watching a YouTube video is just as immersive and atmospheric as actually playing through the game yourself, right?

It would have been the exact same thing IMO, I've seen comments of people saying they were scared just by watching someone else play that level and I just can't find what's so scary about it.

Why would you assume that just because others were scared from watching, you would get a good idea of what's it like to play it just from watching a small resolution YouTube video? Play through the thing, then we'll talk.

I would, but my game copy keeps crashing on Windows 7 (With the latest official patch, then I tried the fan patch just to see the same result), I so need to install Windows XP. Besides, I watched The Last Broadcast on YouTube (Yes, there are films in YouTube) and I was still frightened, so the small resolution and size of the video doesn't matters much.

Forbidden Siren...soo dark and creepy! I also forgot to mention the dark office level in Area 51 where you only have a flashlight on your gun and aliens jump out at you and your squad. Good game.

I personally didn't think Ravenholm was all that scary. But, I thought that the Arboter's Grounds from LoZ: TP had it's moments. And the boat level from Okami. Man, that freaked me out when the ghost woth no eyes flew right in your face.

The Dunlop Building in Fallout 3 scares me more than I thought a Fallout game would. There's also an abandoned village in Oblivion that creeps me out a little bit. (It's related to a side quest about vampires, so it makes sense that it would be creepy.)

All of the Penumbra games and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Those guys really know how to scare the crap out of people and one of the rare games, along with Silent Hill, that effectively use atmosphere to scare people rather than overdone and lame "pop-out" type scares. As for levels, the bottom of the well in Ocarina of Time always creeped me out, especially the white thing with all the hands jutting out of the ground. And redeads. Can't forget them.

xxxDirtyJoexxx

Hands down the most surprisingly creepy level ever. The game was dark... but I've gone through that hotel at least 15 times, and even though I know exactly what is going to happen around every corner... I still get caught by surprise or creeped out. It is just that well-designed. Fortunately, knowing the layout as well as I do, makes it easy to blow through it, so it won't freak me out as much as it did the first time.

I saw this level in a Top 10 Scariest PC Gaming Moments of all Time video. It looked really freaky and I got creeped out just seeing a clip of it. I think the freakiest part I saw was when the character is in a bedroom and the lights go out. When they come back on, something is written on the wall and you start getting hurt. Very awesome.

Now, I would like to say that the part in Silent Hill: Homecoming where you're in the hotel is awesomly atmospheric. I haven't played any of the others and have no means to. (My computer is a peice of crap.)

There were some lairs in Morrowind that were pretty creepy. They were the cult ones filled with zombies and corprus creatures, surprisingly creepy at the time. Same thing with the aforementioned Vampire hotel level.

I find that the deeper I'm immersed in a game and something like that comes out of left field, the more creeped out I am. Games like Amnesia and Dead Space are creepy, but that's their whole point. I get used to it. But in Vampire, when I'm walking around and talking to humorous characters, or listening to some hobo rambling on about the end of time, or having my character dance for 10 minutes to gain a humanity point, the random ass ghost segment was creepy as hell. I still go to the left of the building to turn around and see the father holding an axe for a split second just because I think it's cool. You don't have to go there, but it's a subtle little edition that I enjoy.

... I really want to play Vampire now.

I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre so my example would be 3-1 (Tower of Latria) in Demon's Souls. The sound of the Mind Flayers' bells sent shivers down my spine. Of course it's way easier on NG+ with Anti-magic field. Dead Space is also pretty creepy.

I won't bother naming off any moments regarding actual scary games that deliberatly try and freak you out.

But a creepy moment that I wasn't expecting, the "leviathan" fight in Shadow of the Colossus. Swimming in the water, and you can just barely see the thing lurking in the water before it charges you from underneath like a torpedo.

One of my scariest moments was in Bioshock near the start when all the lights turn off and you get surrounded by Splicers that keep attacking. Hearing them laughing but not being able to see them really creeped me. Also the part at the beginning with the female splicer.

That's a good point... the contrast makes it seem a lot worse. With Amnesia you're expecting it to be scary because, well, it's what it promises to be. But this was in a very entertaining and not at all ghost-type RPG.
