We've got a ton of stickies here as is, and I suspect it will be busy enough to not need it. I'll take a look at the PS3 one though.

Okay so, so far, i've been playing a mix of single and multi player for a few hours.

the graphics are a step back - less refined, poor textures, overall a little fuzzy, lacking details. Its weird, everything feels a little hazy. maybe this is the television. i'm not sure, but they are certainly poorer than MW2, maybe even previous titles. i hope it was just the set up i was playing on.

other than this. the core mechanics are the same as always. the campaign told through flash back is a little corny at times, but hey - its an FPS, so story isn't going to count for that much. The campaign already feels more fleshed out and longer than its IW counterparts though.

overall i havn't been blown away just yet, and the graphics quality (potentially) seems like a let down.

Hmmm... thwomp speaks... let it be :P

But in all seriousness you are the first person who actually got the game, said something negative and gave us something to chew, rather than just saying "MW2 sucks and so will BO". Maybe Gamespot will do a graphics comparison if there is enough call for it?

From what I hear, I don't think it's the graphics being worse. I just think it's the Modern Warfare engine just getting old, which is hard to believe because MW was mind-blowing when it first came out. It's just that other games have stepped up the competition since MW. Still, the best thing about this old MW engine is the 60fps. When it comes to framerate and performance, the CoD series still trumps other multiplayer games in this department.

I haven't played Black Ops yet but I think this is what reviewers are saying about the graphics, that the engine is showing its age.

According to some on Neogaf, there's a significant disparity between the PS3 and XB360 versions, with the latter being far better from a technical standpoint.

Just my opnion, but it seems like the visuals on Black Ops, so far, are on par with the visuals from Modern Warfare 2. Of course, I could be wrong though. The campaign is becoming quite interesting, yet trugs into all-too familiar territory, which is a damn shame.

Yeah, saw that too. I think the 360 has better shadows and higher texture res while the PS3 looks a little brighter with lower texture resolution.

Just popped it in, on a rental. The game already screams quality and polish. I'm playing the 360 version and the visuals are great.

Some reviews have said Treyarch surprised the world, and from the looks of it, they just may have.

I've now tried playing on a different set up, and now, the graphics have improved a good deal, but i would still say they are behind MW2, in terms of detail on textures at least. in every respect, the game is growing on me as i play - no bad thing.

The game is very good looking on my 1080P Plasma. I don't know what you're playing on, but my **** looks great. The detail on the character models is outstanding, I'd say exclipsing even MW2. You wanna see a mediocre looking game with ugly textures? Play Medal Of Honor.

Has anyone tried to go through the campaign on its hardest difficulty? If you have, was it hard and how long did it take you?

Nice thread. Oh man I've been so pumped for this game. I'll have to wait until the end of the week to get my copy but it's just a few days away. I'll be getting the 360 version myself.

Coming from someone who despises MW2 but loved COD4, I can say that Black Ops is everything I loved about COD4 while taking all the crap that made MW2 awful and making it tolerable. Then, they took gadgets and ideas from other franchises and integrated them very well into the gameplay as well.

I'm talking about the online multiplayer only as I haven't started the campaign yet, but the amount of content in this game is staggering. I haven't tried the zombies or wager matches yet, either, but just that fact that they're there is amazing to me. Treyarch may not have a whole lot of original ideas, but they sure know how to take ideas and make them work! I was among the biggest skeptics of this game, but they took the franchise that IW built and then ruined and made it enjoyable again.

I played BO for 7hrs straight today, the maps are far better then MW2 and the killstreaks feel more balanced. The graphics are just as good as MW2 IMO. Haven't touched the Campain or Zombie modes yet, buy the MP is nothing short of incredible.

That's a fair and encouraging impression. Looks like Black Ops went back to what made the first Modern Warfare so good.

awesome that a thread was made for this :)

okay so like how's the multiplayer?

is it a bit more balanced and fair compared to mw2? was it as enjoyable as the first modern warefare?

or is it like somewhat simmilar to mw2- unbalanced/kill streaks/?

how are the maps? lots of places for campers?

and uh I guess I should be asking this like 2-3 weeks from now ... when little kids get their hands on this >___>

would you recommend this or battlefield bad company 2?

I haven't owned any COD games before because im always a bit unsure if it's a good buy

was it well worth the 60 bucks?

1 initially, a theatre level with zombies. beating the campaign unlocks the pentagon map, and you unlock the 'dead ops acrade' somehow, there are videos on youtube on how to.

The campaign on regular difficulty takes about 5-6 hours - i finished it in a sitting yesterday/parts of today.

our character is now a big part of the story, rather than being a soldier who happens to be there like other titles - your the story i guess. there is actually a plot to follow, and you genuinely want to find out more about your character as you continue. People might not expect where the story goes, or at least i wasn't.

The missions are great in terms of locations, but the promised "rollercoaster" sequencing and mix of stealth and large firefights is negligable - there are three stealth 'sequences' totalling something like 15 to 25 minutes combined, and only two are essential, that kind of sucks considering its 'black ops' - the potential in the title feels underused.

a big chunk of the missions are 'find this guy', in different locations, which was a little dissapointing for me PERSONALLY. It works for the story progression i suppose, and its a great ride, but like i said, the title 'black ops' and potential for really varied missions was missing IMO.

Heirren

It definitely deserves the score. This is coming from someone who's not a huge CoD fan. I tend to buy the games and play the multi until I unlock everything then trade the game, but this one is quite good. Campaign is great, multiplayer is fun, etc. It's the same formula that made MW, and MW2 so good, but with Treyarch's stamp on all of it (and I feel the MP is a little more balanced).

Basically, if you're not sick to death of CoD gameplay, this is a great game with alot of value.

That's what I'm worried about. I didn't find MW2 good, at all. Other than the excellent control, MW2 had a hold-my-hand single player, and some of the worst fps online gameplay I've ever played.

i recently cancelled my internet because i am moving in 2 months and intend on getting a different provider.

2 months from now, black ops will still be 60 dollars, so i see no difference in getting it now or later. my question is whether or not the offline modes have enough to offer until i get net back.

i'm wondering what things there are to unlock through the offline modes, the campaign is said to be enjoyable but what replay value will it have, and are there any other offline modes that offer unlockables and/or achievements that are really worthwile.

My best friend is enjoying it quite a bit because there are bots, so you'll be able to experience something fairly similar to the online MP offline.

Just got to level 10 in the multiplayer. Awesome game. So incredibly, hopelessly addictive.

The single-player has impressed me as well, with the breakneck intensity you'd expect from CoD, but with a better and more interesting narrative (so far, I'm only about 1/3 the way through).

So far I can say the multiplayer lacks a little of the polish of MW2, but it's very close. The biggest thing I noticed were the glitched killcams. Maybe they were in MW2, but I don't remember.

I enjoy the level-up system and the weapon specific unlocks. It really makes you feel like you own the weapon, like it's a part of you. Some of the new killstreaks are a little corny, like the RC car, but it's not enough to affect the quality of the experience. I do think the Napalm is incredibly cool, not to mention deadly.

There are also quite a few tweaks to the balance of the multiplayer. Overall, it seems to be a little more level of a playing frield. No more nukes, for one. Secondly, some of the perks have been toned down. No more perks giving you additional damage, or damage resistance to bullets (like painkiller in MW2). And the "Second Chance" perk no longer lets you choose your weapon once you go down. It's always the M911, which I personally don't like, but oh well.

I'm sure I'll get sick of this in a few weeks/months like I always do with CoD games once I unlock everything, but for now, it's an absolute joy.

I've played some of the campaign and some of the multiplayer. They're both good. The campaign has a cool story, action, and cutscenes-- very standard shooter, but then again, I don't expect any shooters these days to be revolutionary. The multiplayer is good, too-- again, very standard and structurally the same as WaW. Again, not a bad thing.

I haven't played much of the campaign since I shot Castro in the head.

That said, the multiplayer can be really addicting right now. I've already gone through Combat Training, which is a mode that I feel is a lot of fun and really does improve my skill. Then I switched over to the real thing and needless to say, I got my ass handed to me. I expected as much though, since those players are just as hardcore as the ones I've discovered in a Halo multplayer game.

Overall, it's a decent first-person shooter, once that I'll be good at given time.

Join the crowd! The game is full of people who you can tell played MW2 every single day since launch. Oh well, I'm always up for a challenge. :P If you ever wanna team up, or just hang out in a Free-For-All and kill each other, hit me up, stud!

So what have you guys discovered from the secret computer? You don't have to say the password you guys have used but you can say what you've found. Out of respect for those who want to find everything out on their own, perhaps we should put that certain aspect of Black Ops in spoilers?

No problem! You're right though - those people eat, sleep, and breathe Call Of Duty MW 2 to the point of whree they automatically jumped on the multiplayer for Black Ops and pretty much knew what to do. In no time, they found the right hiding spots, the guns, etc. It was crazy! It gets to the point of where you have the misfortune of being spawned right near them and they kill you seconds later! What a pain!

I was among the biggest skeptics of this game, but they took the franchise that IW built and then ruined and made it enjoyable again.

agreed. I was skeptical about buying Black Ops but I'm glad I did. It isn't laggy that much for me anymore, but it still needs a patch for sure. The new unlock and customization system is just awesome. Tons of features to make the game feel personal

I find it amusing that although Black Ops is set to be the best selling game of all-time, this thread is quieter than a cemetery.

And that's because COD attracts frat boys, little kids, dads, soccer moms, etc, who don't normally ever play videogames, but rush to the store everytmne a COD game is released. But the hardcore crowd is silently hoping CoD just fades into oblivion... unfortunately, it's not going anywhere for a very long time.

Cracks me up.

I'm remaining respectfully quiet. I USED to be one who really liked the franchise. Then MW2 came out. Not everyone has a vendetta against the game, I just don't dig the series anymore because I feel it's gotten stupid in many respects, and played out in others. I look at it like this -- if I already have MW1 and MW2 sitting on my shelf, why do I need Black Ops? Especially when I didn't care for MW2? I don't feel like spending $60 for exploding RC cars, exploding arrows, some new online maps and modes, and a top-down shooter.

I'm sure it'll sell like gangbusters, but I seriously doubt the claim that it is going to be the best selling game of all time. They say that about every shooter that comes out.
