Does The Orange Box makes anyone else nauseous and quesy?

I feel like throwing up whenever I play it!

I am about two hours into the game and can't take it anymore and have to trade it in!

I have the PS3 version.

This happenned to me once before (with The Punisher game on the Xbox) and I'm not sure what causes it.

It might be the framerate fluctuations on the PS3 version.

Do you have a 360? There's a demo available for download, maybe that version wouldn't affect you as much.

The first time I played Half-Life 2's Water Hazard level (on the PC) was the first time I've ever had to stop playing a game, and take a break because of motion sickness.

As DJ_Lae mentioned, it was caused by high framerates in part of the level, followed quickly by low framerates, and maybe I was sitting too close to the screen. I ended up lowering my game settings.

Other than that level, I can't remember having that kind of experience in other parts of the game, or many other games, but I understand what you mean.

Yes, every version. I have it for PC and it makes me nauseous. I had for the Xbox oh boy that one made me feel real sick. Rented orange box on the 360 same thing. Funny I thought it was just me. I play alot of shooters and I never fell like this, I do get motion sickness though. Had it real bad when was a kid. Get rid of it find and something else, you shouldn't have to force yourself to like something that makes you fell sick!

That's funny. HL2 is so realistic that it'll give make you sick from the action. Hasn't happened to me though.

I don't think a game has ever made me sick (except for maybe that one part in Space Channel 5 when Ulala's in the tunnel). My friend played this game and said it made him dizzy, but I haven't experienced anything of the sort with my time with it. Do you play in long stretches? They say it's recommended to take a break every hour or so.

Some people are obviously more susceptible to motion sickness when playing games. It is usually due to the framerate and/or resolution of the game. Maybe you could try the PC version so you can change the settings.

Ok thanks a lot for the responses.

For the record, it is Half-Life 2 that is making me sick and it is the sewer and water hazard levels in particular. Although someone mentioned that these were the only levels that made them sick, I don't feel like I even want to take the chance - I gave the game a third try (albeit on the water levels) and almost threw up and now will no matter what not try the game again.

I'm pretty sure that it is the bad framerate on the PS3 version that is doing this, but perhaps the game has an odd frame rate on all versions that causes this as some of you have mentioned that you had this same problem on other versions.

In any event it's good to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem.

Seems like this problem is limited to very few games and pretty much FPS ones.

I'll be trading The Orange Box in for something else and just crossing my fingers that this doesn't happen to me on many other games in the future (probably won't since its only happened to me on two games in like 20 years of playing games).

Most people get motion sickness because of the narrow field of view used by Half Life 2. In the PC version it's very easy to change it, but I'm not sure about on the conosles.

I have the same problem, so do a lot of other people. I think it's more pronounced with HL2 because of the smaller than usual field of view.

The only solution I have found, is playing it in dribs and drabs. I can only play for about 15 minutes at the time, sometimes up to half an hour but i don't push it.

If this is too much hassle for you then you might as well take it back and get something you'll be able to enjoy.

I haven't noticed HL2 having a smaller field of view. Maybe you should look into a widescreen monitor? Or maybe try disabling motion blur so things don't get blurred up when you're looking around. HL2 didn't feel any different from most other FPS games for me.

I used to get headaches and a mild feeling of nausea after playing more than a couple straight hours of TF2. Disabling motion blur completely cleared it for me though.

Is there any chance you could be playing too close to the TV?

That could effect things, especially on a system with great graphics like the PS3

Also, try squinting and/or blinking rapidly. The PS3's great graphics can be a little overpowering to the virgin eye.

Its the floating head thing...when you move, your head bobs up and down, and that makes a lot of people sick.

It's a pity, because it's a great game, but you should definitely stop playing if it causes you sickness. No game, for good it may be, is worth more than health.

See, I would disagree and say it was worth it. It's an awesome game, and I would totally throw up once or twice to play it if I hadn't played through the whole game already. Maybe just play during the commercials while watching TV or something and fight through it, eh?

On that note, DO NOT play Marathon on the 360. Ever.

I'm sorry, but playing with a bucket near my couch is not my definition of entertainment. I agree HL2 is awesome and should be enjoyed, but not by putting your health at risk. Any game manual reports the negative effects some games can have on certain players, and it's not to be underestimated.

Valve had a lot of problems with this while testing the Water Hazard level - what you're playing is less motion-sickness-inducing than it was originally going to be.

I never experienced anything like this. In fact, the only time I feel any kind of discomfort is playing the shambles that is Marathon, or playing Gears of War for too long. Marathon will give you a headache because of the odd movement style in the game, and I'm not sure why, but playing Gears for any longer than 15 minutes makes my eyes really hurt. Maybe all the brown.:D
