I've just completed "The Orange Box" once again whilst taking a break from "The Witcher 2" and I was just wondering what's the real reason why "Half Life 2 Episode 3" is talking so long to reach gamers ?

It's been six years now since the release of "The Orange Box"!

Why so long for the next episode to this great franchise?

Valve has hit the jackpot with Steam. They don't need to make games anymore. Not AAA games anyway. Look at Activision with CoD, look at Blizzard, who haven't made a game for 6 years after hitting the jackpot with WoW. Steam is Valve's CoD.

Why bother investing on making new AAA games when people are already throwing money at you for a service where you do nothing but get a cut on other people's games?

The German philosopher Schopenhauer compared the human race to a bunch of porcupines huddling together on a cold winters night. He said,The colder it gets outside, the more we huddle together for warmth; but the closer we get to one another, the more we hurt one another with our sharp quills. And in the lonely night of earths winter eventually we begin to drift apart and wander out on our own and freeze to death in our loneliness.

A quill plucked from a porcupine is not a porcupine.

Well, it's been six years between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. At that was in a time when Valve did nothing but develop Half-Life 2. Now Valve is a much bigger and more versatile company. They run Steam and now they're making a big push into the living room space, they're designing hardware such as the Steam Controller. They're also much more prolific in game releases than they've ever been pumping out at least one game every year.

I always suspected that Valve is doing Half-Life 3 on Source 2 which is causing an even prolonged development time. Now I also believe that all of these recent announcements are affecting it as well. It might very well turn out that Valve is saving Half-Life 3 to launch alongside SteamOS and Steam Machines as a Steam exclusive and as such a bonafide killer app.

Well, from a business point they could just lend the licence to another studio and let it develop it for them, also getting a pretty big cut there. At least that's what most other studios do when they don't have the manpower to stem it all alone because they're to busy with other stuff.

Of course that would lead to a whole lot of new problems like "Will this studio do the franchise justice?" or "are they experienced enough?" or "Can we trust them in delivering our vision the way we imagine it?" etc. etc.

Well ok, Valve is pretty much known for quality and a certain "Valve-Standard" as I may call it here, so, I doubt we won't see that solution at any time soon.

Slightly OT: Jeez, I'm one of the few humans on this planet who never had big interest in the whole Half Life franchise, but due to the massive hype and talking about it even I start to discuss that topic....thanks internet -_-

On top of what everyone else has said, remember that Valve at some point forgot how to count to three. They remembered for the announcements, but it's a slow process. :(

Valve is like the George RR Martin of the gaming industry. And then when you see them release other stuff while waiting for that sequel you're like, "damn you!...this is pretty good...but damn you, anyway!"

I can only think of three complete games that are good from Valave and even then I would not put them in the top end games.

I have less trust in vlave than EA, Capcom and Sega.

Because i'm sure a pretty clever company like Valve will realise that well will eventually run dry.

That's exactly what I'm saying: why make Half-Life 3 now when you are making money from Steam? Save Half-Life 3 for when your current meal ticket fails.

In other words, they won't be making Half-Life 3 until they run out of steam.

I'm not saying exactly that, but if I were them I'd avoid shooting all my bullets at once. It's not like the demand for Half-Life 3 is going down anytime soon. If EA's Origin had been more successful and had impacted Steam's dominance, we may have Half-Life 3 already.

Risky though. Surely by that time it will reach Duke Nukem levels and sorely disappoint.

Except Duke Nukem was in development since 1999 and was scrapped 3 times, while I have my doubts Half-Life 3 is being made as we speak.

Because Half Life 1 and 2 were so monumental, it creates an unmanagable amount of pressure for the 3rd.
