It seems like games aren't as good as they use to be. The only games I will be spending money on this year are Gears of War: Judgement and the Assassins Creed sequel. Every year I have been buying less and less games. Do you guys agree or disagree that there aren't that many amazing games coming out any more.BdogTheGamerI think that overall, games are probably better than they've ever been. Whether or not the number of excellent games has gone down, I don't know. But at least as far as major releases go (I haven't really gotten into the indie scene) I think that the awful games are getting more rare.

Oh look another one.
Play more games, look harder, expand your horizons is all I'm gonna say.
I don't even have the energy to argue with people who constantly say this OVER AND OVER anymore.
Nope, don't agree one iota. While there are rubbish games aplenty, there are even more terrific ones. If you truly feel this way, then I would suggest you find a new hobby. Why waste your time and money on something that holds very little interest for you? Retro gaming is another direction to go.
I think you are suffering from something called "growing up". When you grow up you start to lose interest in things you used to do as a child ie. playing with blocks or building "forts" out of cardboard boxes. Or, in this case playing video games.
Growing up sucks man, but when you reach a point in your life when you don't have much time to play video games anymore, they start to become special/more intersting again.
Back on topic, I think the quality of games is about where it should be: a little worn out or fatigued because it's the end of a generation. Most ideas possible on current hardware have been done and, while there is surely more to give, newer hardware will make it better and the quality of games will increase again.
[QUOTE="Black_Knight_00"] Name the top 10 games you played this generationNamgis
I did some recon. From that list, how's the quality dwindling? Looks like they've had more than enough fun.
I've rarely seen so many 10 and 9.5 on a guy's ratings page. The same guy who's saying quality is dropping. Talk about cognitive dissonance. In any creative field, if your work demonstrates a near complete lack of creativity - you just do the same thing with slight variations over and over - then no, you are certainly not producing quality work. And that's exactly what we've got - sequel after sequel after sequel after sequel.
[QUOTE="Black_Knight_00"] What games have you played this generation?BdogTheGamerTons, too many to post. It seems like each year though there have been less and less games I really want to spend money on.
Probably just gaming fatigue.
The more you play the less is gonna surprise you.

As a PC gamer mostly the peak years were 1997-2000 inclusive, that 4 years was superior to any single console platform (yep, SNES and PS included), PC games were off-the-chart great, at least 20 great titles a year.
...and then the decline began as PC games began to cater to console gaming.
Well, as it applies to PC Gaming this is how it stands. I do like the influx of independent games though.

I actually think they're getting better and better, the only genrea I can really think of that keeps getting worse is JRPG's, but they would have alot to live up too.

Well, those are two games that I think are getting worse (AC3 had potential, but so many things went ignored, like hunting had no purpose nor did most of the open forest, which was huge and took up space, though it made for good atmosphere at times). And Gears of War, excuse me but that is just an example of what is not helping gaming by having a bunch of huge dudes with annoying dialouge go around and shoot huge alien dudes. Honestly, I don't hate these games and I understand why people like them, but I don't see how they're better than other games.
With Bioshock: Infinite, The Last of Us, and Beyond coming out this year, I find it hard to say gaming is going down. All of these games look to have excellent atmosphere, a compelling narrative, and with the exception of Beyond (I really hope it isn't a quick time event game) the gameplay looks to be solid. Plus the AI looks very promising both friendly and enemy. So yeah, do check those games out (or at least Bioshock, as the other 2 are PS3 exclusives, which in that case perhaps check out Metro, with the new one coming out this year and the first only being on Xbox, which is a very good game that isn't talked about much).

That 9.5 for Bayonetta made me want to jump in a flaming barrel of cobras D:Seriously?! Bayonetta for the 360 was one of the best "Stylish-Action" games ever made! I finished it and typically I don't get the ends of "DmC" style action games...
Sure must be nice being so ignorant eh?MarkAndExecute
It's not ignorance. It's a fact that games continue to get worse and worse because developers are running out of ideas and they're too scared to take two steps outside the box.
People who say things like "You're not playing the right games, there are plenty of great games," are in denial. The overall quality of games today has declined GREATLY since the last generation. I can't even count how many amazing gems there are on the PS2. The PS3 has about five so far.
The rest of games that are hyped on the PS3 are painfully generic and predictable.
Sure the PS2 has been around much longer. But if the PS3 is to have nearly as many gems as the PS2 by the end of this generation, it's got some serious catching up to do.

Well yeah compared to the PS2 every system is going to look lackluster by comparison. What kind of fair evaluation is that?

You are complaining about video game quality in decline, yet you buy God of War and Assassin's Creed. You have me so confused.Â

GTA V, Bioshock Infinite, Watchdogs, The Last Of Us all look like super high quality games to me, so I'm not really sure what you are talking about :|.Sushiglutton

I don't know it's the quality, or what. But I have to say, it's rare that I play a game now that can really pull me in, or keep me playing more than a week or two. Canuck3000
This. I believe it has only happened with Demon's Souls and Dark Souls for me, this gen.

New ideas and "stepping outside of the box" are nice, but they don't exactly make for high quality. Similarly, playing it safe and using old ideas doesn't exactly make for low quality. Sure, innovation and new ideas are GOOD, but there's nothing wrong with simply refining what's been done before or using old cliched ideas and implementing them well. Not everything has to "reinvent the wheel." This isn't just the case with games, you'll see it everywhere from music to books to paintings. You know...the old saying "there's nothing new under the sun." Most people involved in any creative medium aren't pushing boundaries or coming up with new ideas or thinking outside the box, but that doesn't make the resulting work bad. It can still be good. It's just also a little bit formulaic and unoriginal.

That's a load of ***** because off the top of my head I can think of plenty of original ideas out there on the PS3 -- Heavy Rain, Journey, fl0wer, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Tumble, The Unfinished Swan, Pixel Junk Eden, Echochrome, etc etc. You're just making broad generalizations based upon a handful of titles you've played without really looking what's out there, and quite frankly that just reeks of ignorance. If you actually take the time to look (and more importantly -- PLAY) the games that's out there, you'll find that the PS3 has tons of gems, and this is coming from a seasoned gamer that's been gaming for 25+ years.Â
Out of those games you mentioned, the only one I played was Heavy Rain. And yeah...I thought it sucked. Sure it was well polished and it was different than most of the games i played. It tried to do something new and that's admirable, but I just don;t think it made for a good game. The whole thing was trying to be an interactive movie, and it starts with the player exploring their own bedroom and trying to find the bathroom so they can take a shower. That's one of those "immersion killing experiences" that plague so many games. If this is MY house and the game is so heavily inspired by movies, then why do I need to find the bathroom and then figure out the layout of my own house? Later on my son got kidnapped (or something like that, I don't quite remember). In order for that to happen, I had to trigger that event by playing a minigame where I play with my son in the park. No meaningful dialogue or anything, I simply do chores with my son until it's sufficient to trigger the scene where my son disappears and the plot progresses. In the meantime, all I'm doing are stupid ass minigames like pushing my son on a swing, and that's boring as hell. This game was CLEARLY trying to be a movie, but the thing is that any movie would have skipped by that crap because no one gives a $***. It's just a chore, like taking a dump. How many movies can you remember that ever showed (or even implied) that a character ever had to waste time sittingon a toilet? I'd wager the number is pretty small because audiences generally don't like their time wasted seeing characters do what amounts to nothing more than chores. Well, I don't play military dudebro shooters, if that is what you are asking.Â
i'm pretty happy with where games are and where they're going. things could always be better, but just last year i really enjoyed journey, closure, dishonored, sound shapes, and dragon's dogma. that's not to say there weren't other good games as well (the unfinished swan and borderlands 2, for examples). plus there are always games i don't get to play.
i think the bigger thing for me was stepping out of the annual sequel cycle. yeah, not every sequel is bad and not every original game is good (or even original :P ), but there's a fatigue that sets in after a while. once you start working in the same series for a while, there are very specific things that gamers expect and i'd rather not deal with it. plus i think the overall idea of a series is more often the most clear in the earlier entries and then gets normalized as the games keep coming out.

okay perhaps I was too vague (Im lovely that way). Anyways what I'm asking is do you choose your games by how much you like them or buy how high they are rated. For instance would you play a unique game with an average rating, or do you put quality above preference ? I purchased Resident Evil 6 despite the poor reception because it had something I wanted regardless of overall quality. . . . I purchased it subjectively, would you do the same for a game you like, no matter what the objective outcome was ?Please Log In to post.
