i have a ton of games for both. It just seems the Genisis is so dated and hasn't aged well. Like some of the beat em up games and stuff, I am just like, how could I ever have thought this was cool. The SNES on the other hand the games don't seem as dated and are still fun to play today, like zelda, final fantasy, donkey kong. It seems like the NES is less dated than the genisis

Bah. In my opinion the SNES hasn't aged well at all; the Genesis has. The SNES was overloaded with platformers and side-scrollers, not much else. Guess I'm just a Sega fanboy :P

it's exactly the other way around. snes games have aged badly and also their gentes while megadrive's games are still fun to pick up and play.

The Genesis still has Sonic, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi. I'll choose these games over almost anything on the SNES. Too much nostalgia for me.

This. I still play these games every now and then and it's great fun.

The only thing about the genesis that ages badly compared to the snes is the controller. Not the games.

No, only the beginning Genesis games age badly, for example the first Streets of Rage compared to the second.

They're both great systems that stand the test of time. My only complaint is Genesis sound-card. The SNES's was much better. But that really is a small complaint for one of the greatest systems ever made. Some of the best beat-em ups, fighting games, platformers, and shoot-em ups I ever played were on both systems.

Both have games that aged terribly. But the SNES having more staying power over all? Not really, I se more homebrew Mega Drive games than the other way around, a lot more hacks to those games, and people know more about its general library then the usual mainstream. SNES seems more like a nostalgic factory.

I have to ask why people think the SNES OR the Genesis have aged poorly?

They were great systems for 2D games. Yeah, the 3D games like Star Fox, Virtua Racing, and Wolfenstein 3-D have aged poorly, but they're few and far in-between. The 2D games are fan-freaking-tastic. I mean come on, you have gems like the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda: Link to the Past, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage series, Mega Man X, and so on and so on. If you want poorly aged 2D games, you have to go further back like the NES (yet I still love it) and the Atari 2600.

Beats me. It's true you pretty much need to pick a favorite, but both consoles are possibly among the best ever created. I'm playing SMRPG as we speak.

I think this is more of nostalgia speaking. The PC, CD (but not by much), 32X, PC, and Neogeo, games that gen all kick the SNES and GENS ass in the aging process. I agree not as bad as what some people are implying, however. Also, i don't think 2600 games actually age, or at least the simpler designed ones. But what I can say is that I think it's both. I mean Altered eat and Chakan look freking terrible, but Sonic in some cases and Super Metroid seem to steal have it good.

I think both aged very well. It really just depends of which one has more games you prefer. Because in terms of ages they both stand the test of time very well.

I personally don't think any game "ages" , though I can understand not being too happy with playing the console versions after the PC ones. for instance, I have Aladdin on both the Mega Drive and the PC (ie , the one I had when I was 5 ) and frankly, I have a hard time going back to the MD version after playing the game on the PC.

I don't think any game from the SNES/Genesis has necessarily aged well by todays gameplay/graphics/sound standards, but many of the games on those systems are still way better than just about anything else released today. I love my SNES and Genesis, as well as the games for them; I see each of them for what they are and enjoy them more for that :)

^ what he said, Streets of rage 2 is always going to be a blast to play. I find my Sega Genesis way overshadows my SNES, the SNES is the one that does not age well, if you know what I mean...

While I'm personally more of a Genesis guy myself, both consoles have games that do feel dated. Though there are some that still hold up, like Chrono Trigger and Mario on the SNES, and Sonic and Gunstar Heroes on Genesis.

Gunstar and SMW have not aged well at all save for maybe entertainment value for SMW and fast pace gameplay variety for Gunstar. They aged badly in every other aspect.

Disagree about the sound. I actually prefer the Mega Drive's sound chip over the SNES. While the SNES's sampled-based Sony sound chip was better at more accurately simulating acoustic music, it had a lower pitch, lower frequency, less bass, and generally lacking when it came to fast-paced music. On the other hand, the Mega Drive's FM-synthesis-based Yamaha sound chip was better when it came to producing deeper bass, a higher pitch, higher frequency, and catchy beats. In other words, the SNES was better at slower acoustic music, while the Mega Drive was better at faster electronic music.

Anyway, I agree about both being great systems. They both have had considerable staying power over the years. You can't go wrong with the Mega Drive's action and strategy games, or the SNES's RPGs and adventure games.

Disagree, because those are exactly the reasons why both these games have aged very well. As long as the actual core gameplay is still enjoyable to play today, everything else is irrelevant.

To an extent, this is true. The SNES had more high-quality exclusive games that you couldn't find on any other platform (excluding emulators, both, VC as well as for non-Nintendo systems) whereas a lot of Genesis' best are better in the arcade versions. The technical shortcommings of the Genesis also became notable with time (especially the low colour count, but also no hardware support for scaling/rotation and a mediocre sound chip). The Sega CD and 32X addons didn't really impress either while the add-on chips SNES used gave it a pretty big advantage over Genesis (the only case of an add-on chip for Genesis was in Virtua Racing). Altho there were also good Genesis exclusive games you couldn't find elsewhere at the time (i.e. the Sonic games, Streets of Rage series, Thunder Force series, Hard Corps, ect.).

That's my opinion at least.

lol, I still play my Genesis all the damn time. SNES games? I only really like to give Mega Man X a go through every now and then, but I can't think of anything else that still holds its charm other than Super Metroid, ALttP, and Chrono Trigger, and the latter two have superior GBA and DS ports anyway.

I have both the Super NES and the Sega MegaDrive. 51 games for SNES and 35 For Sega MD. While Super Nintendo get my vote on best 16-bit console ever. The Sega Megadrive/Genesis was in active production at lot longer that SNES. 1988-1998. and had nice storage cases for the cartridges and manuals. Sega Genesis/mmmegadrive Sold 32-40million over 4 official versions 1,2,3 and nomad.

But Snes lasted 1990-1997. And sold 49.10 million. with just 2 official versions. So yes you are right SNES has more staying power, Despite Sega 2 year head start. and 1 year of still being on the market after SNES.

Nintendo had 60 million Original NES console owners to fall back on, while the Sega Genesis was the newcomber, sure there was the SMS, but it was not popular in the USA.

edit: I think it comes down to perception, they both are still cool consoles that really contributed a lot to gaming. they had gameplay styles that are hardly used anymore. Some games do not age very well that is true.
