I'm surprised it did so well. I haven't seen many people talking about it.LordAndrew
That's because a large majority of the sales for The Witcher came from Europe, which American gaming sites seem to ignore. Second, The Witcher was a PC game, and PC games don't get nearly the big marketing and PR push that games on other platforms get. Finally The Witcher was a game out of a new studio from a European based company instead of some big name title from one of the huge North American publishers like EA or Activision....again, another factor in which many American sites gave little coverage to the game.
Truth is sites that focus on Western RPGs have praised The Witcher endlessly....and there has been tons of praise on both PC and RPG gaming forums. European gaming sites have also given it a good share of coverage.....however, it flew under the radar of many American gaming sites and blogs.
American gaming sites recently seem to only focus on two things.....titles that get big marketing publicity from the major North American publishers.....but even more so the NPD numbers, acting as if it's the end all be all of sales that determine which titles should get attention.....without realizing their is a much bigger world out there.
Case in point...The Witcher....the game didn't even appear on the NPD charts since the NPD only tracks U.S. retail sales from select retail outlets, I think the NPD reported The Witcher only sold 50k in the U.S. retail outlets they cover......but worldwide sales of The Witcher have topped 1 million in a little over 2 months.
Look at Crysis, another example.....it's literally funny watching the different way articles are reporting on it's sales....in the U.S. based sites and blogs are saying sales flopped because it only had 86k copies on the U.S. NPD retail chart in the last two weeks of November:

.....meanwhile gaming sites that cover Worldwide news are saying it's enjoy success by topping the Overall charts in European countries, in fact, in some countries taking two spots on the top 10 sales chart:
