Well, it looks like The Witcher was a big success according to the developer, selling over 1 million copies, a majority of the sales came from Europe:

http://www.n4g.com/News-81964.aspx

Good to see it was successful since it was an excellent RPG...this certainly bodes well for future of PC RPGs from CD Projekt RED Studio.

I have to upgrade my computer before i can play it the way it should be played but that's terrific news... too bad one of the lesser known computer RPG's turned out to be the best (looking at you Oblivion, Gothic, Neverwinter Nights 2)

I will definitely be picking up a copy after trying out the demo, I really like the option they give you to do a WASD move method as opposed to constantly clicking to move. The atmosphere the game provides is really amazing. Although I've only played the opening and the little glimpse of the first chapter that the demo provides, but if that is just a taste of what the full game includes it is certainly going to be a treat.

I was thinking of picking up the Witcher, but after I heard about all of the Engrish and modern slang used in it I decided against it. Still, I'm glad to see an RPG with any real depth did fairly well.

IDK, I bet a lot of people bought the import version. I live in the states and got my copy from the UK. So I think the sales numbers might be a bit off.

Good thing the game is being recognised. I'm still not finished the demo and am still incredibly impressed.

Well, judging from my own experience and comments on forums, I know people in the U.S. opted for the import version cause the European version is uncensored. Normally it's just something small, but I heard in the American version actual missions got censored cause they were tied in with Adult content so I opted for the European version....I rather play the game as intended.

That game looked pretty good. It didn't look mind-blowing or anything, but I'm sure with a million sales, their next game will get more funding and be totally awesome.

If they would have released a slightly watered down 360 port it would have sold 2 million, me and about a million others would have picked this up already...We buy everything, if its at least decent that is, besides Viva Pinata and Eternal Sonata it seems :x

Um... this wouldn't be the game to use as an example of Awesome game = sales regardless of marketing because it is based off of a book that is very popular in Europe. Take the license away and it would be tough to say how much this would sell. It would still do fine I think, but not a million.

Does anybody else think that the Redwall series could adapt very favorably to a well-made rpg...If anybody has ever heard of Redwall, it use to be fairly popular.

I hope they release a 360 version someday. My pc isn't built to handle games and I'm not going to spend the hundreds of dollars it would cost to upgrade it.

Or if you ever do get a PC, it will always be there waiting for you, eh? Like I just got Deus Ex in the mail today because my computer totally sucked when it came out, and when I did get a new computer I forgot all about it. But there it was, still waiting. It doesn't judge me or tell me I eat too many Cheetos!

From what I hear about the game it is miles better than Invisible War. Among the greatest FPS's ever made. I still haven't got down to finishing it but I was able to play of the first little bit, I would probably agree with the general consensus that Deus Ex is an amazing game.

Actually, the developer said that The Witcher is strictly a PC game:

http://www.qj.net/QJ-inquisitions-The-Witcher/pg/49/aid/87969

Have you ever considered a PS3, Xbox 360, or perhaps Wii version of the The Witcher - and given the chance to make one, would you?

The Witcher is strictly a PC game, and it was never considered for any other platform. We do have plans to develop a console game in the future, though.

I haven't heard any plans or announcements of that changing.

However, CD Projekt is said to have a seperate studio team in the working stages of future Console product, while the team that made The Witcher (CD Projekt Studio Red) is said to be planning additional PC projects.

CD Projekt is a publishing company over in Eastern Europe that now has different internal development studios....their Red Studio (the studio that made The Witcher) supposedly will be solely focused on PC projects, while they supposedly have another studio that will be creating Console (most likely 360) and multiplatform titles.

That's because a large majority of the sales for The Witcher came from Europe, which American gaming sites seem to ignore. Second, The Witcher was a PC game, and PC games don't get nearly the big marketing and PR push that games on other platforms get. Finally The Witcher was a game out of a new studio from a European based company instead of some big name title from one of the huge North American publishers like EA or Activision....again, another factor in which many American sites gave little coverage to the game.

Truth is sites that focus on Western RPGs have praised The Witcher endlessly....and there has been tons of praise on both PC and RPG gaming forums. European gaming sites have also given it a good share of coverage.....however, it flew under the radar of many American gaming sites and blogs.

American gaming sites recently seem to only focus on two things.....titles that get big marketing publicity from the major North American publishers.....but even more so the NPD numbers, acting as if it's the end all be all of sales that determine which titles should get attention.....without realizing their is a much bigger world out there.

Case in point...The Witcher....the game didn't even appear on the NPD charts since the NPD only tracks U.S. retail sales from select retail outlets, I think the NPD reported The Witcher only sold 50k in the U.S. retail outlets they cover......but worldwide sales of The Witcher have topped 1 million in a little over 2 months.

Look at Crysis, another example.....it's literally funny watching the different way articles are reporting on it's sales....in the U.S. based sites and blogs are saying sales flopped because it only had 86k copies on the U.S. NPD retail chart in the last two weeks of November:

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=153188

.....meanwhile gaming sites that cover Worldwide news are saying it's enjoy success by topping the Overall charts in European countries, in fact, in some countries taking two spots on the top 10 sales chart:

I seriously need to try this game out as I hear so many good things about it. I just wish I had more gaming time.
