There is still room for 2D games?

We all feel nostalgic for the 2D side scrolling games like: Blackthorne, SoN Castlevania, Megaman series, Contra and many others.

Sometimes I wonder: Where are the 2D games? These games have no more value or appeal within the gaming market?

Much of gamer culture that we have today was given because this type of game.

And with the current generation of consoles, PS4 and XBONE, I'm sure that could be produced 2D game with hours of gameplay and beautiful graphics.

And what do you guys/girls think about it? Do we need 2D games in this generation?

We do, desperately. Which is why I look forward to Pier Solar HD so much, and still pine for a big, gorgeous, gloriously sharp HD classic Castlevania title that plays out the events of the battle of 1999, and the final end of one of the single most notorious video game villains of my and many other children of the eighties youths, Dracula. That kind of thing can't just be a footnote in a portable game. I realize it would have to be a downloadable game though, but I'd be more than happy to have it.

There has been a lot of 2D and 2.5D games through the 7th gen. Guess you haven't checked the PS3 indie collections, the XBLA and a lot of Steam.

However; the 8th gen has only just begun. Give it time.

this past generation, we really saw a resurgence of 2D games rather than any kind of drought. big developers like ubisoft and nintendo have been releasing tons of 2D platformers. smaller developers have been doing pretty much every genre you could think of in 2D. i doubt we'll see a drop off on newer hardware.

You're right about the 8th gen. But when I think about a 2D game for this 8th gen, I think about a console seller 2D game. The PSN/XBLA have good indie games but they are like a second option.

last gen there were an insane amount of 2D games as there was both a resurgence in both the point and click adventure genre and shmups with a platformer here and there. They're aimed at a very niche community and they're fantastic games... I'd actually prefer it to stay that way too. a lot of the titles are actually from Japan... which just goes to show that they're great game designers. If you're sick of the cinematic-focused games of the west, you just have to search.

some examples of titles released last gen:

shmups: deathsmiles, deathsmiles IIX, akai katana, ketsui, under defeat, mushihimesama, mushihimesama futari, dodonpachi daioujou, dodonpachi daifukkatsu, dodonpachi saidaioujou, muchi muchi pork, pink sweets, espgaluda II, radirgy noa massive, illvelo, eschatos, ginga force, caladrius, shooting love 200x, shooting love 10th anniversary collection, bullet soul, jamestown, raiden IV, raiden fighters aces, guwange, strania, etc.. 90% of these are retail releases.

point + click adventures: broken age, gemini rue, the dream machine, edna & harvey, the dark eye: chains of satinav, resonance, the sea will claim everything, yesterday, botanicula, machinarium, deponia, the rabbit's apprentice, the inner world, fester mudd, samorost etc...

platformers/action: super meat boy, gunlord, braid, fez, la mulana, bit.trip, hotline miami, nidhogg, limbo, the swapper, etc... (this genre is a bit more popular and easy to find titles in)

actually, four of my most anticipated games are 2D...

Armikrog.
Broken Age (part 2)
The Dream Machine (episode 5)
Ithaka of the Clouds

and there's also some shmups like NEO XYX and Gamecenter Love releasing.

there's "To The Death" which is a shmup/beat-em-up hybrid (looks like a MOBA) being kickstarted right now by ex-Infinity Ward members.. Todd Alderman (lead game designer of CoD 2, MW1, MW2, and now working on Titanfall), Francesco Gigliotti (lead software engineer), Cecil Kim (Santa Monica) but the niche community sees it primarily as tripe.

There have been no shortage of 2d games over the last decade. A lot of them are great games, like Super Meat Boy, Limbo, and Trials Evolution.

There are lots of great 2D and 2.5D games, especially on Wii/Wii U
