they learned from halo and gears that they should release a ton of copies, even back at the halo 2 days I didnt pre-order and I got it on the 2nd day at superstore when it was sold out everywhere else

Depends on where you live really. Larger areas get stuff sooner than smaller areas. The Target in my town usually never gets new releases on time.
pre order bonuses

Exactamundo. I'm a sucker for those kind of things. Not those small DLC kinds, but some nice collectibles like figurines or other items. Unfortunately those pre-order offers don't happen as much...
Best Buy probably had one of the best pre-order bonuses ever:

They had a bunch of those when I went there 2 months ago and they were selling them for $10. I always wondered why they only had them there.Actually theres a good reason, when you pre-order an extra copy gets added on to the total units that store is buying, which directly counts to the total sold. If you just buy it on release day you havn't added to the total or helped the developer in any way other than how many were going to be sold anyway and you just bought one of them.
It's a way to help your favourite developers to keep them making more games you that you like. Pre-order bonus is just an offshoot of them trying to get you to pre-order.
You guys get that 9 times out of 10 the pre-order "bonus" is just content that was cut from the main game, right? And what about games where you aren't sure how they will turn out? I didn't pre-order Bad Company because all the previous console Battlefield games were pretty bad. However, the game turned out pretty awesome. The problem is that when I play multiplayer, there are guns grayed out that I can never get because I decided to buy the game a week after it came out.
Basically, I'm saying that in-game pre-order bonuses are dumb, and you guys shouldn't think they are okay or that you are getting something extra. We are buying video games here people, not cars. We shouldn't have to put a down payment on it.
Most pre-order bonuses are crap though. The only one I got that stands out among the rest of them is the Afro Samurai one.

Depends on what you like. Knights in the Nightmare gave you the OST and an Art book. Magna Carta II gave me an artbook. All reasons I pre ordered the games.
From my experience if you live in a big city such as San Franscisco you need to pre-order games. Games tend to be sold out when you don't pre-order while not so big cities like in Fresno there will be plenty of copies available.

I completely agree with you, with the minor exception of the smaller releases from companies like Altus.
Unless a company offers a discount, gift card, or other reward, don't bother with pre-orders, especially from some shady company (gamestop) that actually charges you money to do it.
You don't pay any more for the game than you would normally, so I'd hardly call it a 'charge.' At the very least, I view it as putting money down to indicate how serious you are about making the purchase of the game later on. In fact, MOST companies have you paying some form of money when you place a pre-order, with the only possible exception being Amazon, if they hold off on charging you until they ship the title....don't bother with pre-orders, especially from some shady company (gamestop) that actually charges you money to do it.

It's still money out of your pocket before the game is in your hand. If Amazon is the only exception to this, then I can't think of any reason to pre-order a game from anywhere else but Amazon.

That $5 charge is taken from that games full price when you pick it up anyways. It still costs about $60, but you only need $55 when it arrives.
The one good thing about pre-orders is that most stores will honor it's original price where if it goes up you still pay the original price, and if it goes down you pay that new price with the pre-order charge still applied.
In game pre-order bonuses are starting to get ridiculous. Modern Warfare 2 for example you only get those vehicles if you win the contest, but the only way to enter the contest is to pre-order it.
That's why if I do pre-order something for a bonus it will only be for something I can actually have in the real world. If I don't pre-order I could still find those bonuses in a vintage/comic shop, where as in game items will probably never actually be released for the non pre-order community.
Pre-orders are actually essential.
It isn't just the pre-order bonuses that attract a few gamers.
Fact is, even some of the best-selling games of all time get sold out VERY QUICKLY. Of course, you could try going from another place to find the game you want, but what if they don't have it either?
That's why I've taken the time to pre-order my games, at least the games that I want anyway. That way, I won't miss out on the day it comes out, it's in my hands, andI don't ever have to worry about finding another copy again.
Why people say that pre-order is not a big deal is beyond me. It's important to do every now and then. Otherwise, if you walk into a game store and ask for the game, yet the retailer tells you it's not there, the only person to blame is yourself for not doing the right thing. Now, if you somehow get very lucky and find the game at another store, that's great. I know this because I used to work for Gamestop a long time ago and I've had my share of angry customers when they phoned us and asked if we had Grand Theft Auto 3 in and when we said no, they got angry. It's fine to be angry that there's no copies in stock, but the blame should again be put back on you for not doing the smart thing in the first place. Simple as that!
But these days,I just find it to be a necessity so that I can enjoy the games that I want without skipping a beat.
If you are going to be like that, then Amazon is still just as bad, as they charge you for the game when they ship it, which means it's money out of your pocket before the game is in your hand, technically. It's still money out of your pocket before the game is in your hand. If Amazon is the only exception to this, then I can't think of any reason to pre-order a game from anywhere else but Amazon.

I agree with this, 100%.
And it also seems that people in this day and age have a complete lack of patience. Sure, the game you want will get sold out on release day, but who on Earth said that MW2 or any other big title will only do 1 shipment?
I haven't come across a pre-order bonus I've actually wanted. I don't care about figurines or art books. I definitely don't like the "in-game bonus" horsecrap. It's in the game! I've bought the game! That bonus should be mine regardless of how early I ordered the damned thing. One thing I do like is what Atlus sometimes includes the OST with the game. That's not a pre-order bonus though, that's just Atlus being awesome. Games like God of War 1 and 2 included "behind the scenes" stuff (which was cool), now you have to pay at least another 10 dollars for the special super extra awesome edition to get things like that.Canvas_Of_Flesh
^ And this.
what about when you pre order halo 3: ODST you get to play as sgt johnson you telling me that aint good wll ok sgt johnson isnt as good as my gaming icon the one and only master chief spartan 117MRcHaZeEm
You don't get it. You did not get extra content for pre-ordering. They just locked out content that was on the disc for everybody who DIDN'T preorder.

I call B.S on this because you also get art books and other stuff other than DLC crap so yes there is a need for preorders still. If you don't want to pre-order that's your business but to come on a forum and tell people that its not needed is b.s itself.
