My PS3 stopped working for no apparent reason after having it for only 6 months. Anyone with a 360 is almost guaranteed to eventually get the RROD. I recall many many years ago playing the crap out of the Atari 2600 for many years, and not once did it fail. Now, we pay more for things that break down easier. They just don't make 'em like they used to. Yes, games are obviously better now. But the hardware is made so cheaply.

Just saying.

It's the same with everything electronic nowadays, TV, MP3, etc. old radios/TVs tend to last forever since it's quality>durability nowadays where as before you expect to get something and not replace it for awhile

Alas...gone are the days when a simple blow of a cartridge or shutting off a system for 10 minutes for overheating was the bane of gamers. Now, there are rrod, disk read errors and the like. Technology indeed.

i think the improvements in graphics, sound and gameplay all make up for low durability

So you are willing to send a console for repairs, at your own expense if it is past warranty, if it means having better games? Games are expensive enough, let alone the added cost and sheer hassle of keeping the console working. I think you might have a change of heart if your console broke down while playing a game with improved graphics, sound, and gameplay.

I remember how much the DS and DS Lite had those L and R buttons that would break easily. Loathed that for a while...

I agree about the systems not lasting as long. But ... I also remember my 2600 controller busting pretty easily. I hated it, too. A lot of those games were so fun. Imagine being able to go back in time and show the 2600 kids what we have today. I think their eyes would explode.

Sadly, yet really anything up to the Wii's launch excluding Playstation products, and the 360 have been nothing, but amazing reliability imo. I don't know of any system I've ever owned that just broke down randomly.

It also seems to just be multimedia devices like phones, game systems, and mp3 players that companies release a new version of every few years. Wouldn't surprise me though. They didn't coin the term "planned obsolescense" for no reason.

My 360 has broken down three times since i bought it in frebruary 2008 and while it is a hastle sending it off to get it fixed i dont find it to ruin my experience and also its not consoles are a "hassle" to keep working how much maintenance is there to do on a ps3 or 360? and while i believe that the consoles should have higher durability i dont think its that big an issue and even though my snes, genesis, ps1 and n64 all still work 100% after all these years i have no reason to go back to them.

The point is, if everyone was as accepting and forgiving as you, then companies such as Microsoft would have no incentive to improve the quality of the their product's manufacturing. They will just keep getting worse. Quality is the key word. I think people here are mistakenly saying "durability" when we really mean "quality". Durability means how well a console would survive if I purposely dropped it from my roof onto the concrete. Quality in this context means how well a console continues to work with normal usage.
