I'm curious to know what people actually care about in a collector's edition because some of the CEs really can't justify their price in my opinion. So.

Things I care about in a limited edition...

previous games of the series, T-shirt, soundtrack, and posters

Thinks I DON'T care about in a limited edition...

art books, making of the game documentaries, action figures, in game item that may only give an advantage at low levels, and metal boxes

The the fancy metal boxes are definitely cool, but only worth it if they encase some sort of collectors edition goodness. All too often limited editions are sold at a $20 premium and customers are expected to see the case as a bonus feature in and of itself.

I know not everyone cares about soundtracks and some people love the action figures. What do you guys like to see in a collector's edition? i think it's a good thing to consider the issue in general because if you don't think about it until a game's CE is offered you end up buying it because you love the IP and not because you even care about the stuff included.

In all honesty, I think collector's editions are just for novel value. In anticipation of a new game being released, a buyer would be more prone to pay an extra $30-$40 on bonus stuff. And it seems as of late, collector's editions haven't included anything that great to justify the extra money.

What I care about: Things that make me unique in a multiplayer game, items only available through CE, free clothes. Love video game T-shirts.

Don't care for: Art books, comics, metal cases and documentaries or "making of the game" videos.

Most CEs these days are only CEs in name, I like it when a game comes with a soundtrack, FREE of charge, as I like VGM. Honestly the smaller companies (ATLUS, ARKSYS) get it right when they do limited editions, or include some kind of bonus item and don't charge you an extra $20 for it.

IMO, some sort of physical object like in CoD 5- a canteen in CoD 6- the original CoD and in Halo 3- oh wait, nothing.

I like the action figures. Comics are cool too. If the soundtrack is worth listening to on it's own, such as in a game like WET, then that's a nice addition but I can't say that for most games. Bonus in game items are okay but what's even better is bonus game! Extra levels. I love documentaries too. Those are always fun. Artbooks? Yeah, they're okay as a nerdy coffee table book.

Mostly, though, it's the documentaries and action figures. I think they're the best things you can put in a collectors eddition box. The metal cases actually just annoy me.

I like most of the stuff you get with Limited Edition's and Collector Edition's. Some of my favourites are:
  • Metal cases
  • Soundtracks
  • Artbooks
  • Strategy guides
  • Making of dvds
  • Free downloadable content

-Previous games. Like you, I think it's a fantastic addition to a platinum game. Bioshock 2 came free with Bioshock on Steam - wasn't a collector's edition, just a preorder deal, but still a great idea. Mass Effect 2 should have come with Mass Effect, especially given how cheap that game is now. -Soundtracks. Nice to get a chance to listen to in-game music without the distractions of the sound effects. If the music is good, anyway. -Art books are nice when they're done well, Unfortunately, they're rarely done well. Persona 4's artbook was nice (it was also free with preorders), and Warcraft III's was fantastic. Metal cases are kind of neat, but aren't a dealbreaker for me. I don't care about anything else. Documentaries are some of the worst, as they're poorly produced garbage with the sole intent of selling $10 more of game to the consumer with next to no increase in production cost. Some CE's are just fancier cases. Yes, that's worth $10. The most offensive are figurines and other silly trinkets, as they're shoddy in quality and serve no purpose other than to drive up profits with no effort. Halo 3's cat helmet, Bioshock's figurine (the fact that most broke was kind of telling), MW2's night vision goggles, etc. All crap.

I have a videogame bookshelf and the top of it is reserved for the added stuff that comes with the games. I have the Fallout 3 lunchbox, pipboy clock and bobblehead, the bioshock figure, the Red Faction Guerrilla mech walker, the Ghost Busters Slimer bust, The Oblivion coin, the Morrowing Ordinator, The Dante's Inferno Figure and some other things. I like the casing (especially the GTA IV one with the metal lockbox), Sound Tracks, Items like those listed above, artbooks, DLC... I think "Making of's" are useless.

I have never actually bought a collectors edition. They just don't offer things that I feel are worth an extra 20 dollars. I just want to play the game. Atlus has me spoiled, though, by typically providing the soundtracks with the game.

Collector's Edition have often been rather lackluster lately for the past year. Recent trends of exclusive in game content is rather unsatisfying such as the Mass Effect 2 armor. Yeah, the armor is pretty neat to have and good stats in the beginning, but it gets blasted once you start collecting better armor. In the end, they're useless.

Examples of really bad Collector's Editions:

-Splinter Cell: Conviction

-John Woo's Stranglehold.

-Clive Barker's Jericho

etc.

Things that are awesome to get:

-Some sort of figure

-Soundtrack

-Art Book

-In-Depth Making of that doesn't feel like a 10 minute experience(I'm looking at you Jericho and Stranglehold)

------

Things that are not so awesome to get:

-Exclusive DLC that is rather useless in late game progress.

-T-Shirts

-Some sort of stupid stickers or USB with trailers on it (Seriously Ubisoft? That was the best you could come up with for Conviction).

While I'll admit there has been some good ones, there are a lot that are just not worth the price of admission and if you really wants the extra goodies, better of waiting till it drops in price.
