Here's the thing, the PS3 has a lot of cool looking games like Heavy Rain and MGS4 I want to play but as a PC gamer who's favorite genre is shooters I'm not sure if I should buy a console.

How are shooters on consoles? Is aim assist really that bad? I can't enjoy a game that aims for me, I need to know I'm responsible for scoring that shot on my opponent, that my reflexes and aim put him down, not some "magical helper".

And it may sound silly but I'm afraid playing shooters on consoles will ruin my aim with the mouse and keyboard(heh...).

Obviously I won't be purchasing it just to play FPSs but many of the PS3's prime titles are shooters.

Opinions are appreciated.

Some games have aim assist, such as Call of Duty. I don't care for Aim Assist either, since it makes me feel like I didn't do the work. Killzone 2 has no aim assist, you have to aim yourself, which I like. You use the left thumbstick to strafe and move backward/forward. You use the right thumbstick to change the angle you are viewing and rotation. Think of the left thumbstick as W,A,S, and D; and the right thumbstick as the mouse for rotating around. You use the shoulder buttons to shoot (hence why they're often called 'triggers' (the index finger pushes them)) Not every game has aim assist, it depends on the game. There are many shooters on the PS3 that don't have it. Not sure if that helped or not, I hope I helped to answer your question.

I find shooters on the ps3 and 360 pad;s awesome, Keyboard and mouse has always felt a a little disengaging in my experience

I love the feel of a meaty pad with those triggers and feedback

it really doesnt take long to get used to it, my first dual stick game was halo, coming from a KB/M combo, after about 2 weeks of play I got really used to it

yes a KB/M is easier but that doesnt make it better, I find a control pad can be a more satisfying experience when you get good at it but you have to put up with the first few days which will be hard to get used to

and yes I hate aim assist its detracts from the experience

To be honest, I'd say be looking for something other than FPS games if you're getting into consoles. PS3 is a great choice, and games like MGS4 and Heavy Rain would be hard to replicate for PC. Still, Killzone 2, from what I've heard, is an excellent shooter. (haven't played it, just got a PS3 myself and I can't buy every game at once)

I'll be getting a PS3 for the exclusive games, I'm sure many of them will be shooters so I'd like to be sure that playing shooters on consoles means actually playing the game and not having aim assist do all the work. It would suck to score that sweet headshot and know that you had very little to do with it. Know what I'm saying? My PC is still pretty damn good, I bought it late 2008 so I'm sure whatever shooter comes out within the next year or so I'll be getting for the PC, but it would be nice to know that even after my PC ceases to function as a gaming platform I'll be able to continue playing and most importantly ENJOYING shooters.

killzone is excellent but not stellar and I think resistance 2 is very good but not excellent

but in all honesty if you really cant stand shooter on a pad the PS3 has LBP, The Last Guardian, Heavy Rain, GOW 3, Gran Turismo 5, some really good exclusvies for the PS3 at the moment that arent shooter

Yeah I know it has other genres too but I like team oriented shooters such as MAG and SOCOM so I'll probably be getting them. Also It's not that I can't stand playing shooters with a pad, I have played Halo at a friend's house and also Time Splitters 2 so it's not the input device that worries me, it's how much control the game has over my aim.

You are in luck since most of Sonys shooters have little to no auto-aim which is why you hear a lot of complaining by people who struggle with these games.

Killzone 2 and MAG both have little to no Autoaim and I feel its a lot more rewarding, same with Socom and Uncharted 1/2 (third person).

I just got a PS3 this week (finally plugged it in yesterday, had to wait for the HDMI cable to arrive) and I'm also a big PC gamer (PC is main gaming platform, consoles are secondary). I've already played a bit of MGS4, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Uncharted 1/2, and a few others and I have to say that the PS3 is definitely worth getting. However, I have to say that the FPSs I've played have left me underwhelmed.

Killzone 2 looks great but the controls are awful. The analog sticks have a huge deadzone in that game for some reason, and as a result you can't make quick, fine aiming adjustments. Instead if you try to aim quickly you wind up making this sizeable jump the instant you get out of the deadzone, and the only way to get precise aiming is to move the stick veerrry slowly during which time you're doubtlessly being mauled by bullets. I tried turning the sensitivity down (I had it up to max) and while that did help the problem a little bit the cost was that now it took seconds to make a 180 degree turn. I only had it halfway too, and the only reason I had it at max is because the last 3 or so notches on the sensitivity bars are the only sensitivity settings that actually move your view acceptably fast. Otherwise you spend what feels like an eternity turning around.

Resistance 2 has much better controls and I can't really complain about those. It's problem, however, is that the graphics are a bit "meh", at least on my 1080p screen. I'm actually wondering if the game is sending a 480p signal to my TV because the colors do looks a bit weird (although that could just be the design choice for the game) and I can see some heavy pixelation in some places (such as the bullets which are nothing but a bunch of square pixels).

To be honest I've never liked the playstation controller for FPS games. The analog sticks just aren't tight and responsive enough and the placement of the sticks really needs to be reconsidered. IMO the X360 controller is the end-all, be-all of console controllers, especially for FPS games. That said, no controller beats mouse and keyboard.

However, the PS controller is fine for games aside from FPS games and most of the games worth getting on the PS3 are non-FPS games anyway.

That bad huh? Well I used to play a lot of TS2 on the PS2 and never had a problem with the controller so maybe it'll be different for me. Also maybe you already know this but there are gamepads for the PS3 designed like an XBOX360 gamepad.

I say go for it. The console exclusives are really really good. I understand moving from the mouse/keyboard to the controller is difficult because of a less "accurate" aiming scheme, but in changing setups there are other connections to the game which are gained. It's rather hard to describe. Plus, the games are designed knowing the player is going to be using a controller. You just have to go with it.

How good is the quality? I've only had bad experiences with 3rd party controllers in my 16 years or so of gaming.

We're in General Games Discussion.

Anyway the system's best shooters are Killzone 2, MAG, Uncharted- none of which have aim assist. I'm sure SOCOM dosesn't. I think Resistance 1/2 do but they're still fun. So does Warhawk but the regardless of that, the game is a ton of fun (And cheap now). You've probably heard all kinds of things about how the DS3 is crap for shooters but it really isn't- just my experience. I have large hands but I never experience cramps or problems with the triggers/analogs, etc. Try to have a go on a friend's PS3 if you can, just to get the feel of it.

Try downloading the patch and enabling "high precision mode". It should help a bit.

I find the PS3 to be a better console but sadly there aren't enough good quality games available on the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360. If games like Mass Effect ,Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and quality mmo gamers other than FFXI then I would buy a PS3 tomorrow.

I'll try that as soon as I can get my PS3 registered on my campus's network (my uni insists on having every device's MAC address registered before it's allowed access to the network).
