So, people have started a petition to get playable female characters included in the game.
My question is why this game in particular is drawing complaints about that? This is hardly the first game to focus on a male protagonist...

If it's the MP they have a problem with then you can apply the same argument to games like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2. I don't see any female characters in those games...
Well I guess the problem is that in the Alien/s franchise the main protagonist was a woman. And in Aliens the marine squad also included woman.
There's no female characters in CoD,BF,TF,CS,Tribes (at least I think),Doom and god only knows how many other FPS and TPS games.

This.
And Vasquez kicked ass.
not only that, but the series has typically worked with female themes too. i dont know that gearbox should have to change the game, but it should certainly raise some eyebrows.Well I guess the problem is that in the Alien/s franchise the main protagonist was a woman. The female themes that go along with the Alien were originally designed to make male viewers uncomfortable :P
But yeah females in the Alien franchise were always portrayed as being on the same level as the guys. To have an Alien game that doesn't even give the option to play as a female Marine is just odd.
Aliens i can see, i love that movie and hoped that females would be included, as to CoD battlefield etc well, women arent allowed into infantry or artillery units
I hope people know that all this uproar over the game is likely to just give the game more publicity and therefore sell better.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a start of big movement to change the attitude towards females in all games XDTazzman1000this is the last thing games need right now. im already sick of video games becoming a milkfest. i really dread them becoming victims of affirmative action toward women and having storylines and lore destroyed by a female that the writer mindlessly placed into the mix. i dont care what gender or race the protagonist/antagonist/sidekick/etc./etc./etc./etc. is, i only care that the story flows well. i know im overreacting to the idea in your post, but i wanted to throw my opinion on that dreadful scenario out there and i hope i got some people aware of how dangerous affirmative action could be on the (already slowly diminishing due to other factors) amount of immersion our games provide. people complain too much and this could actually become a real thing in this really pathetic day and age in american society.
If you were a female gamer im sure you would get sick of playin as a man in every single game ever created so i can understand these complaints. Every game, especially Coop games should feature at least one playable female.
Ripley > any generic male character they came up with

I agree, in a way. I'm all for equality but at the same time I'm a firm believer in "the best person will get the job". I don't think females should just be shoved into a game just for the sake of it, just like i don't think in assassins creed 3 a revolutionary soldier should be killed for evey brit killed.
I usually stay away from these sort of threads, but considering the movies all had prominent female protagonists and even Prometheus (while not a direct prequel) had a female lead (and a very good one at that), so it's kind of odd to not have playable female characters in the game. Watch them end up being DLC with a statement saying how much they wanted to please their fans so here's a $10 DLC pack for a handful of characters.
i don't see why everyone' so upset and making up lies of ripley being a pivotal character in the movies to justify their claims of needing female marines
ripley was a one-off character who was killed in the scene following the chestburster in alien 1 she never reappeared in any of the sequels
i don't know how people can confuse her with parker, the black guy, the only survivor and the hero of the next three installments
people just rewrote the movie in their delusional minds to jusify their feminist rages

I'd much rather see a petition for a streamlining of the game. F**king 4-player co-op, multiplayer, etc. Focus on one thing and make it good. I don't want dude-bro's smoking grass and farting in my ear while I'm playing this game that is so reliant on atmosphere and setting. Gearbox needs to remember that.
And blah blah blah I know the game can be played alone, but the structure will be such that the single player portion will suffer tremendously as a result of the co-op focus. Just look at Gears 3.
I take it that you haven't actually watched the movies. Ripley is in the first four movies, she dies in the third and is brought back as a clone in the fourth. The person who died in the first movie a-la chest buster was a crew officer called Kane, he dies in quite the memorable way. Never wise to watch that scene while eating. Parker died in the first movie. The Alien franchise has generally had strong female leads, from Ripley in the first four Alien movies to Alexa in Aliens VA Predator 1 and Kelly in Aliens VS Predator 2. There was also a strong female support role in Predator 2 by the name of Leona Cartnell and a strong female role in Predators by the name of Isabelle. Predator 1 and 2 had male leads, as did Predators, while the Aliens movies have been a female lead. The male cast died pretty quickly for the most part in the Aliens movies, the chest buster scene from the first movie is one of the most memorable.i don't see why everyone' so upset and making up lies of ripley being a pivotal character in the movies to justify their claims of needing female marines

 Did you miss the joke man?
As for no female characters in Aliens. I have bemoaned this in my latest blog. I simply cannot understand Gearbox's omission in this case as the franchise is built upon strong female characters. Even if you struggled with Ripley (being non military) you could not argue against Vasquez in Aliens. She is the only one that manages to keep her calm when all the other (male) marines are losing their s**t.
And... as a female gamer. Dammit I want to be able to play with a female avatar from time to time.... PUUUUHHHLEEEEAAAASE.
Normally I dont really care about issues such as this, but this is a game based on the Alien franchise, which has had a strong woman or women fighting the Aliens alongside the men in every iteration of the franchise, so it doesn't really gel with me to have none in the game.
