The sense of accomplishment and reaching a goal with a group of comrades is what RPGs are all about.

This game I'm playing, the first Dungeon Siege, there's this huge underground dungeon that I had to go through to reach the next chapter. This underground is filled with my worst nightmare which is giant spiders, thousands of them everywhere coming through the ground, the walls, and even from the ceiling.

The thing is, before I went into this dungeoun, me and my party of four were weak. I couldn't even beat the goblins outside and they kept beating me to a pulp. But I had to go into this dungeon regardless because I had to progress. And with the fear of the unknown of not knowing what to expect in this dungeon, my party and I headed in, weak, limited health, terrible weapons, and little protection, just with our bravery and courage and our wills to pull through.

After many hours through this dungeon, killing hordes of human-like giant spiders, I've finally reached the Mother-spider, a huge monster that fills half the screen. At this point my party gained tons of levels. I also got powerful weapons, spells, and strong equipment. My party and I became unstoppable.

After killing the Mother-spider, I went back outside, breathing in the breath of fresh air. And then those goblins that kept kicking my butt before, came attacking me again. But this time, it was the other way around as I swooped them all with one swipe of the sword. They were cockroaches compared to me. I realized how my party and I became powerful and because we overcame this trial togehter.

I know it's just a game, but this is the reason why RPGs are so addicting and enjoyable. This answers why grinding or repititive hack-n-slashing becomes addicting. The sense of growth and pulling through against all odds give you a sense of accomplishment. And this emotion is what keeps you coming back for more to challenge greater odds.

With this scenario I want to write a story out of it because this scenario I mentioned is sort of a metaphor for life. By going through the tough valleys or our underground dungeouns in our lives, so-to-speak, coming out of it at the end only made us stronger and more equipped to face new and exciting challenges in life. Coming out of that dungeoun feeling stronger and breathing the fresh air outside felt refreshing. Gosh, I sound like a preacher right now, but this is why RPGs are fun to play.

Heh, it sounds corny, but it's true... part of the reason RPGs (and games in general) are satisfying is that sense of accomplishment and growth... making oneself better and the good feeling it gives is part of basic human instinct in my opinion.

I love RPGs for the sense of adventure, discovery and of course making it through that hour long boss battle that you barely won. Hell, I remember playing FFIX on the last boss and after losing 3 or 4 times I was getting very frustrated. I only had one character standing with one last chance to attack before I died. If the boss had one more attack I would be dead. I had just enough mana to summon Leviathan killed the boss and enjoyed the great ending movie. Total Satisfaction.

I love rpg's for all those reasons as well, and I had a similar experience with the final boss in Legend of Dragoon. But the one thing that keeps me in an rpg when the gameplay does start to get a little boring is the story. Anticipation of what is going to happen next is what keeps me playing for so long.

story is really what does it for me. although other genres have made serious trides in the past few years, nothing can come close to a good RPG. as long as its a GOOD RPG.

I've always been more attracted to RPG gaming as opposed to other genres, but I never figured out why. Perhaps, subconsiously, it is the very reason you have stated...hmm....

I however feel that it's more rewarding to master a combat system then my stats. In my opinion I feel much more rewarded beating enemies because I know more about fighting instead of just leveling up teaching my sprite or model about fighitng if you know what I mean. :P

But I do agree, accomplishment is the main reason why we play the genre in the first place. Then again you can say that about almost any genre just in different aspects.

I completly agree with your post.GodModeEnabled

Naw, Dencore! Still love the JRPGs. Just bought Rune Factory and have been playing GrimGrimoire since day one (even though GG is not a RPG). Also got Jeanne D`Arc pre-ordered, can't wait for that. This week!

But you're kind of right, I'm just kind of getting into the WRPG scene nowadays. Why you ask? Well, I guess because when it comes to JRPGs, I've practically almost played them all. The only ones I haven't played are the next-gen ones like Enchanted Arms. I probably won't get my hands on Blue Dragon or Eternal Sonata for awhile.

But for WRPGs, I've missed out on a entire decade of RPG goodness, so I'm trying to catch up. The downside? Don't have time to play all these. The good side? Most of these great titles are at a budget price now, so they're worth experiencing.

I love both JRPGs and WRPGs. They provide different experiences and I think in their own unique ways, they're both rewarding.

I'm similar I just started the whole "let me expand my gaming tastes". Here is what I have so far.

Brought Final Fantasy XII *some people consider it a WRPG* = Zzzzzz.....

Brought Oblivion = Zzzzzz....

Brought Deus Ex = Awesome, but it really isn't too much of an RPG in my opinion.

Brought Planescape Torment = Zzzzzzzz....

I'm sorry I just can't get into this genre it's just so boring. I'm going to try out Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate II, then Fallout II and if I don't see any results this genre is dead for good in my eyes.

Anyway I just asked because it seems that you are in a similiar situation then I am in trying to get into this genre, there's only the fact that I've been trying a little before you.

However when you think about it, both the genres try to do the damn same thing only with a different vision. You both talk to NPC's to figure out what to do and go, in both you have a mission to accomplish, you both have stats, being good in combat is an important priority for both, in both you have to explore the area to figure out what to do next, in both you need to gather items that will aid you on the quest, and etc. etc. etc.

I just strongly prefer JRPG's because they cut right to the chase, I just wish there were more with meat on their bones like they were during the PSone and Saturn days. I also REALLY want Persona 3 but I have so many games on my list I just can't. I mean I already have Bioshock, Metroid Prime 3, Guily Gear /\ Core, Phoenix Wright 3, Zack and Wiki, Contra 4, No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, Trauma Center: New Blood, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Professor Layton, and Orange Box on my list. :(

God I wish Japan was still the king of the gaming sales world just so that quality game releases were spread out like they use to instead of craming them all into 3 months. :(

I just bought Morrowind because people praised it so much, and I've spent about 10 or 20 hours with a game but it really is quite a chore to play after playing Oblivion and especially Shivering Isles. I really don't know understand why so many people hate Oblivion and so many love Morrowind, when Oblivion IMO is ten times the fun of its prequel. Furthermore, Shivering Isles shows the potential of the series, the area is simply stunning, and most of the places are not only distinct but have their own backstory...I really hope that future Elder Scrolls continue with this trend even if it means sacrificing size.

If I'm working with my friend to play a game, then it becomes fun. And by working together, I don't mean in Diablo 2, where your friend frost novas everything for you to rush you to diablo. No I mean working together as in, you set the trap, the other guy lures, another guy lays AoE, etc.

Other than that, I loathe RPGs for their grind-filled gameplay.

I felt the same way with Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. At the start, I got dominated from the start by all the ninjas. After beating the game, I went back and played the start of the game on hard and tore everybody, including the boss, up. However, that is a situation of me being awesome, not the characters in a game.

Yeah, Dencore. What made you fall asleep? I think Oblivion is great!

The trouble is, I don't have a powerful rig to get the full experience. I also don't have a 360. But I want to definitely play Oblivion once I get a newer powerful PC. But for now, I think I should give Morrowind a try first.

It´s pretty much the "you put hours into it and get something for your work"-thing.Something that comes often really short in real life. You had done something good so you got awarded for it...a bit like a dogs-logic  Maybe that´s why I´m not that big fan of classic Action-Adventures (like Zelda). You can slay hundreds of Enemys and get almost nothing,or at least don´t get stronger. You just have to find stuff...boring in most cases.

Well I also like a unusual good long storyline told.At least in JRPGS.A thing that never can be done in that way by Movies or books, but books at least are near it.

I agree with most of what has been said above regarding the nature of RPGs. Still, it has to be said that computer RPGs can never hope to reach the amount of satisfaction and creativity that goes into an old-fashioned, pen and paper RPG.

That aside, it was that lack of the feeling of progress that made me get tired of Oblivion so fast.

ASK_Story

First of all let me say that who ever coded Oblivion's matching system requirements is a straight retard The game looks like crud on my PC and I'm forced to run it on low settings. While I can run games like Lost Planet on almost max settings, and Bioshock on medium.

Also Oblivion is just boring. Here is little my impressions of the game after I left the Dungeon:

WTF! I spend almost $2000 on my PC and I get N64 textures? :|

OMG a guy! Time for COMBAT! I just keep clicking to attack with my sword? Oh crap I'm going to die, must RUN!.....Why is he still attacking the spot I was in if nobody is there? :|

Yes time to deliever that jelewery to the guy, just follow the arrow. *10 minutes later* ALMOST THERE! *15 minutes later* I'm getting BORED* *5 minutes* ^&#@ THIS! *Goes to explore the towns*

Awesome a town! Let me go inside the house to steal peoples goods. OMG a lady in here! Lady: "You monster!" Shut up you stupid ho! *Kills lady and steals goods*

Ah outside now, oh look it's that knight dude. Knight :"You're under arrest!" Ahhhh! *Steals Knights horse*

Okay now I'm in the city. WTF? Knight: "Stop you've violated the law!" HTF did you know? There aren't any phones in medievil times. Crap gotta run.

*Talks to people* People: "There's a man who calls himself Gray Fox" .....Metal Gear? Postman comes "I have a delievery for you." *Reads* "It's Gray Fox meet me at the garden at the ship docky place at 3 am" Okay.

*Goes tot he ship docky place* Where is this garden? *looks for 5 minutes* It's somewhere around here *looks again for 10 minues* Frustrating *looks again for 20 minutes* WTF!? *looks again for 5 minutes* PIRATES! Ahh help! Yes the guards are here to help me! :) Yes they killed them! Knight: Stop you've violated the law! Damn it! *Steals pirate sword and runs outside*

*Goes to another town after 2 hours of running* Hello? Anyone there? What's up good pedistrian! Pedistrian: *pulls out knife* "I'll kill you!" WTF!? *slashes sword and kills the pedistrian* Group of people behind me : "Murder! Murder! Get him!" ....:| *Runs into town hotel*

*Asks hotel manager* WTF IS WRONG WITH THOSE PEOPLE!? Hotel Manager: "Oh they're just scared because of the attacks on the town recently." But he attacked me. :| *Sleeps in town hotel* *Wakes up* Man in Robe: "Hello." ...Rapist? Man in Robe: "Are you interested in killing? Because I'm starting a cult about killing people....would you like to join?" Sure. Man in Robe: "Good kill this guy in this one town and you'll be initiated." Sweet. Man in Robe: "Oh yeah the guards are down stairs and they're coming up to kill you." What!? *Guards burst throught door* Guards: "MURDER!" *Runs out of room and hotel and to outside, steals horse and trys to find the soon to be victims town*

Okay so gotta find that one town let me look at my map. *Pulls up map* ......WTF it isn't even on here! Whatever he said go NorthEast to the nearest town so I might as well do that. *Goes NorthEast for 2 hours* &%#@ this! Let me just go back to trying to find that one guy to deliever the jewlery too.

*5 minutes later* That was fast. *Goes inside* Man: "Ahhh the pendent! I can see he trusted you" Just give me my money so I can leave" Man:"Travel to this one place to help guards there" MORE RUNNING!

*Follows the red arrow for 2 hours* Oh look a dungeon time to explore! :) at Level Design. *After 40 minutes of unlocking doors and killing skeletons* WTF! this has to be a joke right? After getting so far there's only like 20 credits at the end? :| *Goes back outside*

Okay now to find those guards. Ahh I see they're right over that mountain...now how do I reach it's peak? *1 hours after constant trial and error* FINALLY I'm here! Guards: "Great timing we've just opened the gets to Hell! Want to come in?" Sure. *Jumps into portal.

Knight: "Come on let's fight them together" Okay. *Knight dies on his 2nd enemy encounter* :| *Progresses on.....monsters are too powerful so I go back through the portal*

Okay so that was stupid, let me go back to the city. *Reaches a house and goes inside* Man: "I'm having a bear problem, kill 5 and I'll make it worth your while" *Kills the 5 bears* Man: "You've killed them all? Good here's 20 credits." *Kills the guy and steals all his money and goes back to the City*

*Runs away from guards in the City until I find an arena place* Man: "Want to join the arena?" Sure. "Okay Pit-Dog doors right up there" ....Pit-Dog? *Fights man in arena* Man: "You did great out there pit-dog here's you reward 70 credits". Why are people here so cheap? Man: "Want to fight again?" No that was stupid.

*Goes to armoury to buy weapons* *Looks at prices* WTF! It would be easier finding to steal these things then to raise this amount of money!

....Screw this game!!!

And those are my impressions on Oblivion. :)

Dencore and ASK_Story, you guys should try Morrowind.

ASK_Story

I fell asleep during Oblivion so I doubt I'll like Morrowind.

Just curious to see what it was in Oblivion that made you fall asleep.

Well maybe you'll like MOrrowind more if you play it before you play Oblivion otherwise...well just read my post.

That really depends on what you want out of a WRPG. Morrowind is more traditional and has fewer absurdities, whereas Oblivion caters to the action-hungry and has a good number of absurd goings-on. Morrowind also hasa larger world, more quests, more armor styles, better lore (I think), etc. It's a toss-up. If you like action and you're not traditionally into WRPGs, go with Oblivion. Otherwise, Morrowind might be better for you. Someone on this thread, I think, mentioned the Oblivion review(s) on rpgcodex.net. I checked it out, and the reviews are very good.

Dencore, get a feel for what's going on at the Arena. You fight progressively more difficult and sometimes more numerous opponents and you earn progressively more gold. Eventually, you'll reach the top, have endless opportunities for earning a high number of gold pieces, etc. You didn't give this portion of the game a fair chance.

As to the guards knowing what you do elsewhere... yeah, that's one of the absurdities of Oblivion. I don't think Morrowind is like that. Oh, and I've never seen anyone stand there and attack air when you've moved. What I have seen is that if you sneak attack someone from behind, sometimes they'll just stand there and maybe make a comment, giving you more time to sneak attack them, causing great damage.

Fair chance? Sorry but I found it boring as hell. I don't feel like exploring dungeons and finding tourneys and side quests to get the extra cash just so I can buy a decent sword.

I'm seriously not even kinding the guy just stood there swiping his sword at nothing, must've been a glitch. Anyway I just find it's combat dull. I never cared for hack-n-slash.

Paragraph 1: I meant just the Arena quest. And about weapons... buy something basic at a store, then go out and find better stuff. Because of the game's level scaling, you'll find better stuff as you grow in level, not only at stores, but mostly out in the wild, in caves, etc.

Paragraph 2: I can only see hack and slash combat as dull if you'd rather have a greater element of strategy involved. The combat is certainly less dull than Morrowind's which is probability-based. But still, that's not really a shot at Morrowind.

People that think that the final boss in FFIX is hard should try The 7th saga on super nes.Crap I've been trying to finish thus game for like 10 years but it's just too freaking hard. The only positive thing about this is that I didn't go crazy. But i broke 2 controllers........it just seems to relax me.If someone can beat this game,he's the best rpg player in the world.
