I just came upon this artilce here: http://www.buttoncombo.com/?p=4784 stating that male gamers need to man up. 18 to 34 year olds need to stop playing so much. I'm 26 going on 27 soon, not married, and just recently landed a full time job. Maybe I need to man up some more? I'm taking my time. I'm trying to enjoy the bachelor life for a little while longer because once you have kids your life is pretty much over. I probably fit that description of what CNN is talking about in that article, but I say **** it. It's my life!

I sincerely hate people who try to tell you to stop playing games and grow up. Gaming isn't something you grow out of. You may put it on the backburner when you try to get your life going, but you really should never stop gaming if it's something you love doing.

If this is what they consider needs to be done to "man up" i guess i will be a boy until the day i die. Granted i'm not married yet...no kids that i know about...i do work a full time job. But seriously? Thanks CNN for making me facepalm.

Lol, the writers probably think we should do more productive things like watch South Park or Family Guy.

Seriously, though, gaming is a legitamate hobby. I fail to see how watching TV all day is betetr than playing a video game. I mean, I understand that as you get older, you have alot more responsibilities, but that doesn't mean you have to give up gaming.

CNN can say what they want for all I care. Blaming this and that. Next thing you know they'll say Netflix is bad because women watch too many romance movies on it and they won't find a man. Like the TC said. It's my life and my problem. Not yours. I do however wish I was younger so I'd have more time to play games. Now its just work/family/bill/friends/ and leaves little time for gaming.

I'm engaged, have an apartment, have a job as a field manager for a service company, and I'm going to school part-time to pursue a law-enforcement career.

Yeah, I play games anywhere between 10 and 40 hours a week. Why is that anyone else's concern?

Agree totally, I'm 27 an consultant for H & R Block, with a mortgage, beautiful wife and a son, but I love the hell out of gaming. My parents think i should be playing golf on the weekends or yard work but i would much rather "pop some domes" on Call of Duty. My wife is in full support of my hobby so no you are not to old. Keep doing what your doing my friend and don't change for anyone but yourself.

WTF? That article was crap. No I don't have a significant other and yes my job could be a little more challenging but who cares? I still work. Plus, I don't even game 5 hours a week.

Yeah I'm in no hurry to get married. That is a major commitment and needs planning. I work and make money and right now thats enough for me. I don't need some crappy article telling me how I should live my life.

IGN wrote an article on this as well, and they did a good job of poking holes in the guy's argument. It was actually a pretty good read with interesting facts thrown in for good measure. If anyone is interested here it is but GS won't let me link.

While I can see at the heart they are trying to say go get responsible about life... I see no reason to blame games for the crisis. I work with a guy that is a 30 something bachelor. One of the hardest workers in the company. At night he goes home and plays video games. Myself, I work hard, when I go home I take care of my family and then a few times a night I play some games. Again I don't see how games are causing a problem at all. It is the individuals attitude toward life that matters. When will people quit trying to scape-goat everything?

Should we give up TV, internet, books, movies, board games, puzzles, etc., as well? Everything in moderation. Weak article.

Edit - just realized it's Bill Bennett. Given his gambling addiction he shouldn't judge anyone. You shouldn't play video games, but gambling is alright. Preach on Bill.

According to Bill Bennet, the article writer, so long as the women folk stay barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen making the men folk a sammich, they can do whatever they want, as playing games would keep them from getting an education, or getting all uppity and having delusions of equal rights to men. This guy is a raging misogynist, and all his angst about men needing to "man up" is just a plug for lame book on the same subject, which all boils down to the fact that he thinks the women are getting a big head, and he's mad that he can't just beat them back into the kitchen anymore and get away with it.

People just need to do what's best for them in their own personal situation and not listen to trendy outside influences or bad advice that doesn't fit them.

If you are ignoring personal responsibilities then yeah, maybe you need to lay off the games a bit. But if you have the free time, game to your hearts content no matter what your age or background if that's what you want.

I'm 24, I work close to 45 hours a week and hold a senior position at work. I have a girlfriend, and next month we'll be together for 5 years. We're both gamers. Yeah, I get paid pretty good money, and so what if a lot of it gets spent on games? I'm living on my own now and it's my money. I still get my bills paid and I still eat good, so who cares? I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't have kids, so I have the money and free time to spare. That's my choice to make.

I'm 25, essentially married (living with my GF, for almost two years now; we only want to legally marry when kids are on the horizon) and am on the verge of starting my career search. I work 32 hours a week, spend time with friends and family, and think I'm more than "man enough." The problem here is, is that the definition of being a "man" varies significantly between individuals... and what this article considers "manish" behavior may not be what others believe it involves. I think anyone who needs to seek affirmation that they are a "man" from others cannot themselves be a man (to play off of C.S. Lewis).

CNN is funny. Gaming is nothing but a hobby for must of us. They act as if we're addicted to it and never do anything productive with our time.

And as for "manning up" (the article seems to imply that gamers 18+ are immature), I've run across gamers in all kinds of positions-- one of my best friends is a TSA officer who is a gamer, one of my fellow graduate students is a gamer (he and I are doing our Master of Science degrees in Mathematics and we teach at the university we're getting our degrees at), and one of the recent Gamer Spotlights on XBox Live featured a Ph.D. student (albeit a female one) who is a gamer. I believe there have been reports of military personnel overseas who play Call of Duty, too.

There are CoD veterans in the armed forces. In fact, recruitment went up by 3% after the launch of the America's Army game. I honestly do not agree (AT ALL) with the article writer on what determines a grownup. What's with the drive to show how uptight you are to society? ***edit: Grownup's are in no way uptight, just those that want to make fun of others for having fun.

I hate the media's constant attacks on gamers and the gaming industry.

Whenever I tell anyone that I like to play video games and that I like to play games such as World of Warcraft and Counter Strike, they make judgements about me: ("He must spend all of his free time playing those games, I've seen those stories on the news about kids whose lives are ruined by World of Warcraft.")

But that couldn't be further from the truth. Video games are meant to be only for fun and shouldn't interfere with the important things in one's life. (Such as work, school or family.) Video games are a HUGE part of my life, but playing video games is just a hobby of mine. Just as how playing golf might be a hobby of someone else.

It sucks that those few gamers out there who allow themselves to be addicted give the rest of us gamers a bad name because of the attention the media gives them. Most gamers aren't lifeless losers with no ambition. Everyone I know who likes to play video games aren't like that, we're all reasonable people and have our priorities in order.

Yeah you make some good points. Some people don't understand or choose not to believe that videogaming is an actual hobby. And in my experience it's not just the older generations that are the perpertrators. Some of my friends tell me constantly that I will eventually "grow out of videogames".

I guess the media doesn't help the situation.

lol what a stupid and uninformed article. It's BS and is unreliable, how does a hobby make you less of an adult :? Let's see hear, there are alot of games that are rated M, which means adults buy them. Yes kids get a hold of them too but that's because of bad parents. Also games are 60$ a piece so that means that one would have to have a job in the first place to be able to purchase games and systems. So obviously that article is wrong....

Having a job is important though, but I don't see how not being married doesn't make you an adult :? I'm not married but have a girlfriend who I have been living with for 2 years now, but I don't see how that makes me not an adult? And then there are those people who don't get married ever, that's there choice but there still adults last time I checked...

People should stop trying saying this and that about being a grown up. It should be about maturity. So what if you still play? That doesn't mean you don't take care of your responsibilities. It just means you are mature enough to have that balance in your life.
