Do you think too much realism in a game can be a bad thing?

YES! Too much realism kills games.
I HATE!!! Tactical shooters like Rainbow Six, because you take 2 shots, you die, and have to do a ton of stuff over again.
If games are gonna be incredibely realistic, at least give constant checkpoints, so its not just irritating.
But if you play like a WW2 FPS and get killed every time you got hit it would probably become difficult to play a campaign. It would be kinda cool online though.Nagalux
I've been playing a lot of DoD:Source lately which can be extremely frustrating due to it's realism. One bullet kills and stuff like that but I guess that's part of it's allure.
when it comes to sports games, realism is the only thing I look for.
However, when it comes to other genre, that's up for grabs. It all depends how well you make the game than what kind of style you choose.
Realism can be a tricky bonus to a game, yet easily a detterent for the reasons mentioned above.
If I wanted realism, I'd head into real life ;)

no way
real life don't have save points and continues.
Yup, we play games to GET AWAY from realism dont we?
Recently i played GRAW2 on my ps3 and it wasnt fun at all...

I don't know about you, but I don't lead an Elite Special Forces Team in the Army. And even if I did, I doubt I'd be able to hit reset when I screw up or just flip a switch to turn it off when I'm done. So yeah, GRAW is still a very unrealistic game in my eyes.
I agree. Games are supposed to be an escape from reality. I like to be able to do things I never would be able to in real life, and whilst I am all for improving the realism in terms of graphics, some things in terms of gameplay I am less keen on. An example of this is having to eat to stay alive, or maintain your body mass in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, making the game more like The Sims, an aspect I didn't appreciate.southy787
Having to eat to stay alive, or work out to stay in shape in a game is definitely pushing it way too far IMO. Could you imagine if you had to clean your guns every so often in a FPS so they wouldn't jam. Things like that just get in the way of having fun.
A good mix is the optimum for me.Or at least I want the chanche to control it.If I play a sports-game like Basketball I want to get the ball without having always foul-trouble.
But games can be that realistic that the fun is a goner...look at Richard Burns Rally...I never played it,but the fact is well known.
Sometimes yes , because it takes away from the fun of a fantasy world. We all see enough killing and crap on the news and in newspapers everyday.I think when done properly it can be a good thing but think of games likes zelda, metroid , final fantasy, Jak and Daxter, or even halo, all rely on a fantasy atmosphere to help propel the feel of the game to something thats alot of fun. But with the right balance between the two it can make an even funner game.
Alot of people talk bad about ecco the dolphin defender of the future and say its rediculous that a dolphin is going to save the world, but for any one who has taken the time to see the game through they can tell you that it is a really cool experience and wouldnt have ben no where near as much fun if they tried to make it too real.
I guess my point is is depends on the type of game.
I think a good mixture is best. I couldnt see myself playin LAIR because the premise seems unrelatable. Same with NFL Blitz and Mario Striker. With sports especially it hasto be 100% realistic for me. For FPS and the likes, I dont mind dinosaurs like turok or aliens like Halflife, but over the top abilities like being able to fly or being invincible just dont appeal to me
