I actually maybe slightly prefer Braid, or find it equal to SMB in terms of being a great game, but as a straight up platformer SMB has no equal.

exceptionally tight controls, quick and smooth gameplay, and some of the best level design the genre's ever seen.

i think the only ones i played this gen are Limbo, Trine 2, and New Super Mario Bros Wii

Honorable Mention: 'Splosion Man

If you're like me and got into gaming primarily because of platformers like DK and Mario, you owe it to yourself to play Super Meat Boy and Rayman Origins. Absolutely brilliant games, those two.

Rayman Origins, everything else is irrelevant.
