With this gen winding down, and only a handful of potential great games to come. I want to know what GS users think the top 5 games of this gen will be, when we look back, say if in 2023 they asked you. For me

1. Bioshock

2. Portal

3. Super Mario Galaxy 2

4. Mass Effect 2

5. Uncharted 2

Taking into consideration I haven't played Infinite, and GTA 5 has potential to make the list. Last of Us could be special too. Just out of my list are Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Space, Batman Arkham City, Portal 2, Journey.

1. Uncharted 2 Among Thieves

2. Batman Arkham City

3. Portal 2

4. Mass Effect 2

5. Bioshock

Those are the ones I picture standing out still in 10 years for most gamers. My list would be a little different however.

that's hard to think about, much if it might easily be forgotten or not age well by future standards, but the games I think might embody the generation nonetheless: Gears of War (series) Uncharted (series) Call of Duty (series) Wii Sports Mass Effect (series)

Are we talking about the big games that will be remembered as trendsetters and/or really amazing classics? And exclusively for consoles? If so, in no order: CoD4: Modern Warfare Bioshock 1 The Walking Dead Minecraft Then either Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, or something. My personal list for just "best 5" would be much different.

Im gonna try to put games that I think acutally deserve it....not my personal top 5.....this is not in any order either.

1.  Portal-changed the way we look at how physics can be used in games

2.  Red Dead Remption-Showed us the capabilities of what this gen could truely accomplish

3.  Demons/Dark Souls- Brought back the classic style of  relatively high difficulty and put it in a rich open world with the old school style of discovering the story for yourself.

4. Skyward Sword-Many wont agree with this but I feel like this was the the one game that truely made use of the wii's full potential.  The motion controls felt very smooth and it was what I imagined the wii to be when it first came out.

5.  Bioshock- This game showed us that an fps could be more than just blowing terrorists and zombies away.  these games present us with a rich beautiful world and a complex story that is worthy of a screenplay imo.

  • Bioshock
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Batman AC
  • Left 4 Dead
  • GTA 5

These games gave me great experiences and many hours of fun. Bioshock showed me a world I didn't know could exist on consoles. Mass Effect 2 made me feel like the galaxy's fate was in my hands. Batman is probably the best super hero game I've ever played. Left 4 Dead had zombies, team work, and always made me be on high alert. This one is a bit early but I have a strong feeling this will be the grand theft auto everyone hoped for when GTA4 came out. Not a bad way to end a console cycle for a lot of us than to do God knows what in Los Angeles for a few months.

I could only chose games from what I've actually been able to play so I can't say if Zelda, Metroid, or Uncharted 2 are top 5 or not. I'm sure they are fun for a lot of people though.

Demons souls -> Made many gamers realize that difficulty is a important aspect of gaming.
Crusader kings 2 -> A grand strategy game that became quite popular, may be the start of something more.
Bioshock ->  Revived the single player FPS genre and taught us that atmosphere in games is very important.
Mass effect  -> One of the few games that is truly great in every single aspect.
Monster Hunter ->  Many game sof this generation spend too much time on general AI behaviour and not enough time in programming varying attack patterns or different NPC's, Monster hunter did and capitalised on it.

Hmm, I will not place my own top 5, but what I feel deserves to be the top 5 (even games that are no favorites of mine)

5) Portal

4) Call of Duty 4

3) Bioshock (Or Infinate, yeah cop out, but hard to decide which will be looked upon as having the bigger impact).

2) Demon's souls/Dark Souls (Again, but this time because while the impact was better with Demon's souls, Dark souls were the better game overall).

1) Minecraft

looking back at peoples answers, there is more than 5 games that have come out that are considered classics or generation defining. people always complain about how bad this gen has been but from that list i say its been pretty good. not necessarily innovative but how many games were really innovative last gen as well?

i dont know about that. i consider polish a big improvement. i remember how frustrated i got with camera angles, and how there were a lot of controls that were clunky last gen. just that alone is enough for me.
