I can totally understand someone not liking MGS. You have to be willing to accept a lot of things before you can really enjoy it, and not everyone is going to do that.
I still haven't tried God of War, but it seems pretty boring from what I have seen. Maybe I'll try it if I find it cheap...
You seem dedicated to making decisions predicated upon superficial assessments and more than likely those premature assumptions will cloud your ability to appreciate the quality of the game.
You'll be missing out to be sure but some people like to keep it nice and narrow, yes?
I mentioned earlier that I am a fan of MGS; however it would be blind love if I couldn't see someone not liking it; it's definately a unique flavor.
Unfortunately, with a budget like mine, premature assumptions predicated upon superficial assessments are the best way to cope with my lack of time and money to spend on every little form of entertainment out there only to form a more accurate opinion of it. One of the most unfortunate things though, is when you take everyone else's word for it and it turns out that it's simply not satisfying for you; it tends to make a person a little jaded toward entertainment.
Actually, the thing that got me into the Metal Gear Solid series again (I rented the first game when it came out) was that about five years after MGS2's release, I found it in a game store for five bucks (used). I figured, "5 bucks, that's a meal at McDonalds, and I'll bet this'll be more healthy for me" and so I arbitrarily picked it up and fell completely in love with it (Yes, I fell in love with MGS2.) Because of that I didn't even blink when MGS3 Subsistance came out, I just bought it full price.
Eventually, God of War will be that $5 game, and then I'll finally see what the fuss is about. HOWEVER, from what I've seen it looks like another game like Devil May Cry, and I've already gotten sick of that kind of play; so unless it has a remarkable storyline, I highly doubt it'll score any high place in the list of games I like.
Then again, I could be completely wrong.
The issue isn't budget or time constraints but rather edification. If you haven't played a game then your opinion on that game is completely irrelevant. One of the reasons I found your GTA critique so ridiculous was because it was based upon some pissant kid playing it. (And not playing it particularly well) Even as you're proclaiming the GTA franchise "overrated" GTAIV is offering a flatly amazing and brilliant experience that is literally unmatched within the medium. There's nothing informed or profound about this kind of logic; it's a pedantic and flimsy modality for deciding quality.
As to God of War and its sequel, they are vastly different games than the Devil May Cry series and the respective narratives are coherent and compelling, especially if you happen to enjoy Greek mythology. The bigger factor is that you personal enjoyment of these games is incidental; GoW and GoWII are incredibly well made games and anybody with a working knowledge of this medium should be able to identify that quality almost immediately. The problem with these "overrated" threads is that they feed off the egocentricities of people who lack the maturity to transcend their own narrow views and come to grips with the fact that you can respect something without loving or even liking it. To dismiss a franchise as innovative and influential as GTA or to bemoan your dissatisfaction with something as seminal and respected as the GT franchise reeks of a selective elitism that suggests your own knowledge of the medium is greatly impaired.
Actually, the GT series is a great example of transcending egotism because frankly, the series bores me to tears but that doesn't change the fact that it's a brilliant racer. I could stomp around these boards calling GT overrated and dull but considering how little I like and understand the genre, I would look as foolish and uninformed as that guy who called Tekken 5 a button masher.
You have the right to buy and play games anyway you choose but you need to understand that when you come into a discussion board and start taking a proverbial piss on franchises and games that have rightly earned respect and accolades from gamers you will incur some annoyance from those of us who apply a more expansive approach to this hobby, not to mention how incredibly tired and recycled this topic has become.
