I've been going back to play PS1 games that I missed in my childhood. So I was just looking to see what everyone's favorite PS1 games were and why they were so great.

Good topic:)

My top 5 PS1 games are: (top 5 and honorable mentions in no particular order)

1. Final Fantasy VII because it's an excellent RPG and in my opinion is the complete package in terms of graphics, music, characters, and story.

2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night because it's a great representation of the series with excellent gameplay, a killer soundtrack, and epic boss fights.

3. Metal Gear Solid because it brings back one of my favorite series and defines tactical espionage action, presents an exciting story, and gameplay mechanics. The boss fights were great as well

4. Resident Evil 2 because I enjoyed the first one and I think the sequel made so many improvements and kept the chills and thrills while making those improvements

5. Street Fighter Alpha 3 because the series has always been my favorite fighting game series and this one packs a lot of goodness into one game offering new characters as well as returning characters, solid gameplay, I think out of all the Alpha games this one is definitely the best in my opinion

Honorable Mentions:

1. Final Fantasy Tactics because it's one of the best strategic games based and I love any game that lets me choose a character's job

2. Einhander because it was an unexpected for me that Squaresoft could craft such a brilliant shooter

3.Twisted Metal because it was my first PS1 game and it's offered something different: vehicular combat!

4. PaRappa the Rapper because it's different and I really loved the light-hearted characters and humor

5. Wipeout XL because the racing is smooth as silk, the stages are fun, and the soundtrack is blazing hot

EDIT x2: no game changes. Adding info to honorable mentions.

My top 5:

  1. Grandia - One of my favorite RPGs, it has a colorful and involving story, memorable characters and great battle system.
  2. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped - Great level design, lots of variety, easy to beat but hard to master. (try getting 100% at it)
  3. Metal Gear Solid - Great story and characters and excellent gameplay mechanics, especially the stealth.
  4. Gran Turismo 2 - Great vehicle customization and tuning, lots of cars to buy and races to win, addictive gameplay, tight controls and great graphics.
  5. Driver 2 -The missions are a bit repetitive but challenging and fun, and it's great to just drive around and explore the huge cities.

In no other order than what popped into my head

Metal gear solid (I hated all the other ones but I must have beat the original close to 20 times)

Resident Evil 2 (Scary, Looked great for the time, and sucked me in like no other Resident evil since)

The Die hard triology (I don't know why, but out of all the ps games I've ever played this was one that jumped to my head)

THPS 2 (The game was nearly perfect in my book)

Cool borders 2 (I have no idea how it has aged but I've wasted many hours of my life playing that game)

PSX had a lot of A+++ games, that's why it trounced Saturn. There are plenty I still haven't played, of the ones I have played. 1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Tenchu I & II 4. Resident Evil II 5. Megaman Legends 2 Way more than that that should be played, makes want to go back and play more PSX!

Yep :) If I had to pick a single game from each series, it would be Spyro 2 and Tony Hawk's 1, that warehouse level is the best for the graffiti multiplayer mode! :)

Oh, wow... this is tough :P. But here we go: Metal Gear Solid - 'Nuff said. Excellent game that does everything right! story, gameplay, character development... you name it. The graphics are a bit funny now (mainly because they don't have faces besides the Codec sequences), but they are fine and they are nostalgic to me :). Tomb Raider II - This is always tough between Tomb Raider's I and II... but I will go with Tomb Raider II. AMAZING levels, creepy atmosphere (constantly!), a story that drags you in, perfect length (my average is 12 hours even now), awesome enemies... I will stop talking now :P. Driver - I loved Driver 2 due to being able to get out of the car, but Driver was the original and was the game we all wanted the (awesome) Grand Theft Auto to be. Actually, I would say Driver 1 and 2 are about equal, but the first one is the obvious one to start with. Resident Evil 2 - Take everything that I said about Tomb Raider II and you will understand :D. WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role - was a big Wrestling fan even then, and this was the perfect Wrestling game for it's time. The best Wrestler on the PS1, a classic. Also, I can't submit this post without giving a mention to the original Tomb Raider... the only thing that lets it down for me on the PS1 is the save gems, but a fantastic game!. Lastly, another game that I just could not NOT mention is Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. It's hard to describe... it's very unique... it has pretty sweet graphics too! you just have to experience it for yourself, to be honest :). Highly addictive game.

As before with the similar PS2 thread, in no particular order; - Crash Team Racing as me and my older sister would stay up for hours playing this beauty - Alien Resurrection, the fear that FPS instilled in me just would not shift - Final Fantasy VIII, my first, and therefore, favourite - Syphon Filter, absolute platform stealth-em up brilliance - Metal Gear Solid, again, ingenious
