Can be from any era...I'm only going to list the games that I played so no i didn't play all of the racing games out there...just for fun since GT5 is being released...can be arcadey, kart, or simulation

my top 5

5. Motorstorm (PS3)

4. NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2)

3. Modnation Racers (PS3) = (Little Big Planet + Mario Kart)

2. Nascar Racing (PC) - (Now its a little abscure, but this was a really in depth racing simulator for the PC back in 99 even if I didn't like nascar there was over 150 cars, 50 trucks, and creatable vehicles, plus everything you had to check in race was really amazing for the time, tire pressure, oil pressure, engine heat, tire wear, fuel, damage modeling, etc.)

1. Gran Turismo 2 (PSX) - (The game that got me into racing...forever...nuff said about it)

I've had fun with so many racing games that it's hard to narrow down to just 5 but here are some that I've had a lot of fun with:

Viper Racing (PC) - the physics/damage modeling were excellent
Hydro Thunder (Dreamcast) - I think they did a great job with Hurricane on Xbox 360
Wipeout HD (PS3) - 1080P + 60FPS = good times :)
Super Mario Kart (SNES) - split-screen multiplayer was just really cool
Rock & Roll Racing (SNES) - great licensed music and fun weapons

There are a LOT more, these were just the ones I could think of that aren't always the most mentioned.

well mine are all over the place

1. Stunts (PC). It's an old pc game that has ugly graphics, but the gameplay is great (if you use dosbox on a newer pc, or just use an older pc now). the best part is you can design your own tracks.

2. Burnout2 (ps2) - I absolutely loved this game when it came out. played it to death.

3. RC Pro Am (nes) - great game to pick up and play for a little while. can get hard pretty fast, but still fun

4. Tourist Trophy (ps2) - a great motorcyle racing sim that is like Gran Turismo, but with bikes.

5. Virtua Racing - the arcade is the best version, but i still have a blast on the 32x version

close but didnt make the cut: Gran Turismo 4 and Forza. They are great games, but i dont like them as much as the titles listed above.

Basically Tourist Trophy is what happened when they decided to put 4 bikes on GT4 tracks instead of 6 cars. It even has 1080i support which isn't found very often on a PS2 game :)

One honorable mention to my list would have to include Motocross Madness by Rainbow Studios - the company that went on to make ATV Offroad Fury, Splashdown and later the MX "vs" games under the THQ brand. Another might include Carmageddon II for its Iron Maiden soundtrack and the amount of controversy it created (before GTA was 3D).

One that I thought about was Supercross 2000...one of the funnest and few licensed supercross games out there...RC Pro-Am was a blast and so was Pole-Position...I wished I gotten tourist trophy but I just wasn't sure at the time...now its too late :|

In no particular order:

Flatout for the PS2. Not only did it have a great demolition derby mode and mini games but the racing was top shelf.

Mini Car Racing for the PC. It was a budget game but came closest to the racetracks I had as a kid, plus it had machine guns and oil slicks and more.

Lego Racers on the PC. Just pure fun. Enjoyed it more than Mario Kart.

Trackmania for the PC. Unbelievable. The wide variety of custom made maps were awesome. Why isn't this game on the PS3?

NFS Hot Pursuit for the Gamecube. Had more fun with this version of NFS than any other for some reason.

I want to give a shoutout to Turbo Prop Racing =P

I don't know how many of you guys played this game, but if I remember correctly when Polyphony was just starting out some of the team helped make this game lol. It came before Gran Turismo 2 but it really is a blast to play just for arcade reasons. Not quite like Hydro Thunder but you can race on lava!

In no particular order: -Hard/Race Drivin' (proprietary arcade hardware): One of the games that gave me this interest in driving. Too bad I never could complete even one lap-it's like they put a quarter or two worth of gas in the car (by 1990s gas prices, when it was less than a dollar per gallon for basic unleaded). -DAYTOOOOONAAAAA!!! USA (SEGA Model 2): The other game that founded that interest. I think I always ended up running out of time as well, but it was still quite a thrill nonetheless-and I insist that if anyone hasn't heard that Daytona scream at least once, they haven't been to a real arcade. -Carmageddon (PC): What's this? A racing game with more of an emphasis on exploration than racing, if you've got enough time on the clock? (Now I know that Vette! did just that many years earlier.) I loved jumping onto buildings and stuff in the demo version, not to mention all the Silliness Switch powerups and such. It just had this charm to it, even if the Moral Guardians were outraged at all those poor pedestrians becoming roadkill. The second game improves on the gameplay, but has much less nostalgia attached to it for me. -Burnout 3: Takedown (Xbox): I played the PS2 version at a store kiosk and suddenly find myself remembering a bit of that Carmageddon magic in terms of smashing other cars up and watching them deform as they re-enact a spectacular Hollywood wreck. Let's just say it's one of the non-Steel Battalion-related reasons I'd get an Xbox soon after. (DJ Stryker is unbelievably annoying, though. Seriously, people who think DJ Atomika from Burnout Paradise is grating don't know how good they have it in comparison.) -Richard Burns Rally (PC): So I'm reading up on the racing side of things at SimHQ and see this title brought up a lot, which never did quite gain the mainstream success of a certain Codemasters series endorsed by another late WRC champ (who is sadly de-emphasized from the recent titles). I decide to give it a shot, and immediately, everything I had learned in all of those arcade games had to be thrown out the window. It is realistic-brutally, unforgivingly so, and the slightest mistake in a critical area will probably send you careening off the track and totaling your car. Knowing how to make the most out of throttle and brake is a MUST. Passing that final rally school test is by no means easy, either-the time is tight. But when you finally do it, you feel...relieved, like you just had a huge weight taken off your back. Part of it could be this tense feeling you're going to have as you try to run through such a tight track against the clock, even with no other racers to worry about. But more than anything else, this title has given me a new respect for pro motorsports drivers and what they go through, no matter what road conditions they may be faced with (if driving on the dirt tracks is hard enough, try a snow track), and knowing full well that a mistake on the track can't be undone with a simple "restart" menu option.

Rock n roll racing is probably my favorite game of all time, all genres! I also played alot of Top Gear on the SNES. V-rally on the PSX, Super cars 1 and 2 on the Amiga and, well, the Burnout series. As far as Arcade-machine classics I'd go for the Outrun series.
