Top ten game series according to Old Wizard

Metroid, Street Fighter and Donkey Kong don't deserve to be up there. My list would go something like:

10. Mario

9. Castlevania

8. Crash Bandicoot (At least when Naughty Dog was making the games.)

7. Final Fantasy

6. Metal Gear

5. Kingdom Hearts

4. Jak and Daxter

3. Tony Hawk

2. Sonic

1. Tales

I like this list except for Street Fighter. I never got into the series. Mario and Zelda series will always be on top tho, IMO.

I really have no complaints with this list except that I would replace Final Fantasy with Dragon Quest, because we all know final fantasy wouldn't exist without Dragon Quest. In fact Final Fantasy is practically a clone of Dragon Quest.

P.S. Mario and Metroid are better than all the other franchises on that list IMO

I visit OW every once in a while when I'm bored and read their commentary. It amuses me. If you read user comments on their site, and as someone else said already, they are incredibly Nintendo heavy with their selections, almost to the point of bias. They openly admit to it though, so I have bones with them.

Why not Street fighter? After all, it is the father of all fighting games, and is the most influential one. That's not a subjective matter, Street fighter 2 is to fighting games what Doom is to FPS games, even bigger since it set the bar for future fighting games, and put arcades in a whole different legue. :P

4. Baldur's Gate

3. Starcraft

2. Diablo

1. Doom.

Mario is number 1, that's really all that matters.

He always will be,

Street Fighter and Resident Evil should switched. Resident Evil created a bigger more succesful and IMO a better genre.

That's the top-3, as any top-3 should be. Those three series have maintained the highest level of quality and production for 25 years. Even when they haven't been stellar games that perfectly represent the series, they have still been good games. Granted, they have blemishes, but not nearly as many as the others listed.

GTA is a glaring omission given both the success of the series and the overall quality the games represent.

Keep in mind while reading this list that the fundamental message of this website is that if you haven't played a game since the SNES, you didn't miss anything. Jaded old-schoolers and such...Nolan Bushnell would love that site.
