Didn't see a topic about this so I thought I'd make one.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critical acclaimed RPGs. It's coming out in 2017 by inXile, the company that made Wasteland 2.

Recently they announced that it would be coming to consoles as well, spurred by the success of Wasteland 2 on consoles.

Torment is one of my most anticipated games and I think it's good news that even more people will get to enjoy it when it finally launches. There is an early access on PC but I opted not to try yet and wait for the finished product. Anyway, here's the trailer

cool! I didn't know this. Provided there is decent inventory management, I think modern consoles are a good home for these classic cRPG-style experiences

I haven't heard much from this game. I honestly thought it was going to be another kickstarter disaster. I mean, it still might, but it seems they have a general release date now.

I was about to get all fan boy-ish on here but then I saw the trailer. It looks a bit too clean, that's not the Planescape vibe at all. Plus, it doesn't look like there's a major studio beind it and that always makes me nervous with the modern habit of indie studios and crowd funding.

well, it's not Planescape. Planescape is just a "zoomed out" version of the D&D universe and to use it, they'd need to pay for rights to whoever owns that property now. Tides is sci-fi or sci-fantasy based on the table-top Numenara setting, which was actually itself started via kickstarter.

inXile are offshoots of the old Interplay tree responsible for some of the most memorable RPGs in gaming - Fallout, Baldur's Gate, etc. Obsidian would be the other active offshoot from that period. So it's people who made the isometric RPG memorable, making another isometric RPG...good reason to be excited. Pretty sure inXile also has that program where 5% of their post-launch profits will go to funding other indie titles.

Kinda expected this after Wasteland 2. Hope the game delivers both in gameplay and story department. It has a lot to live up to.

still not a fan of kickstarter developed games, they often seem like cheap knock offs of the real thing

Enk I wish it wasn't turn based - but had real time combat like in Planescape.

I played a few hours of the early beta...last year? The writing was very Torment-y. I wonder how well the UI and general mechanics have improved since then.

@darktruth007: They had a poll among the backers during the kickstarter campaign asking if they wanted real time with pause or turn based. Turn based won over. At the time I thought I would prefer real time with pause in the vein of Baldur's Gate (Planescape: Torment's own combat is hilariously bad). However I then played Pillars of Eternity and I found myself wishing that it had turn based combat. Didn't really like how they did real time with pause. On the other hand games like Original sin and Shadowrun had great turn based combat. All in all, I'm happy they went the turn based way.

@soul_starter: inXile may not be a huge studio but they are actually one of the largest going on Kickstarter. Torment and their previous game, Wasteland 2, were some of the most successful for the platform. I haven't played Wasteland 2 yet but I hear many good things. In addition they have a lot of the writers and designers from Planescape: Torment on the team. Even Chris Avelone will do some writing, although he isn't a lead on the project. They also have other great designers like George Ziets of Mask of the Betrayer fame (one of the best RPGs ever) and fantasy writers from outside the game industry. I can't tell that the final game will be good, I can only hope, but they have a good pedigree at least.

Yeah, like Pillars of Eternity or Wastelands 2...
