It seems that, today, every semi-interesting title (for the PC especially) gets delayed for whatever reason. Everybody acts surprised and throws temper tantrums, threatens civil lawsuits etc. - only to find more delays. Why don't publishers and developers work together to announce an absurd release date, 6 - 9 months later than intended, and simply launch earlyfor a change? Wouldn't that make everybody happy?

It wouldn't make everyone happy, but I agree for the most part. I think games shouldn't be given a release date until they're finished, or near finished.

The 'true' release date will not ever happen in the near future.  Games sometimes get delayed legitimately, a lot of game go through turbulent development and if something bad happens or too many bugs are found, that game has to be delayed.  Also, publishers frequently announce games to come out at certain times so that it best benefits their stock and or fits in with doing well with them in their financial quarter.  Announce a game a game to come out in the fall and shares will rise slightly, so some publsihers do so even though they know it cant come out till the next year.Â
