I ran into the same problem myself, and it is difficult to find a complete list especialy by region. However, you can do a refined google search like "North American NES complete list." When I did this I got two complete lists several years back. I actually printed a NA release list, and a list that had EVERYTHING but also listed the region/s that the game released in. I then invested in the gaming software at collectorz.com which was very helpful since they have every different sku if ou REALLY want to get down to some serious collecting, plus it also has some awesome features. Almost like a Word, Excell, and encyclopedia database for just about every game ever made. Something I have not invested in yet, but I have thought about SEVERAL times is the Digital Press books that you can buy. Look them up... digitalpress.com I am pretty sure. They have COMPLETE books you can buy that have checklists. rarity, average going market pricing/ internet pricing, games on the rise/decline, etc. I will probably ask my wife to order me one for my birthday if I can actually remember to ask her this year :P Also, stop by the CCU (candid collectors union). Sign up for that union here on gamespot. It is my favorite place on this site, with collectors like us with like minds and TONS of nice helpful people that know more about games then your everyday gamers. That is the place to go if you are a gamer/collector or a gamer that is looking to branch out into collecting as well. We have members that have smaller collections, some that have around the 1,000-2,000 amount of games like myself, and a few with 3,000+ games! If you cant find the answers you are looking for there, I would be extremely surprised. They have never let me down in like 5 or 6 years, and I actually learned about digital press and their products their. I posted the info about collectorz.com there as well. There are a ton of helpful links and good people there. Good luck, and I hope to see you there :)
Sorry for the wall of text, I get a little carried away but when I see someone looking to start collecting games especially starting with the NES (my main collecting console) I think it is awesome if I can help someone along the way. I own just over HALF the entire US NES collection which is around 775 games give or take 20 or so. Also, I wrote a single blog a couple years back showing my list of unliscensed NES games I own with mini reviews. Check it out as well if you would like.
Anyways, good luck again, and like I said, you could not find a better group for help, questions. and fellow un-bias gamers/collectors as you will find at the CCU.
[QUOTE="gregbmil"]That's what I do.^This. It's the best way to collect, just buy whatever you feel like buying, that's the fun in it. Going console by console, trying to complete everything in order, will take you forever, you won't have fun, and you'll probably buy lots of crappy games.Instead of doing all that, I would just start out by buying random games at first. Unless your ultimate goal is to collect entire catalogues for a certain console. I still hope to have as near a complete set of US NES games as possible some day minus a selct few of course (dont need to take out a mortgage... lol). That still hasnt stopped me from collecting for other consoles as well though. Soon my collecting goals had branched out to completing the SNES, and Genesis collections as well. At first, it was pretty simple even in the wild to find a lot of great games at reasonable prices. However, now things get a little tougher at times.... With dwindling lists of games I do not still own on those three main consoles, I have thought about going for Gamecube, N64, TG-16, Atari consoles, Neo Geo, and a few handhelds I never got into so much as well. Thats the beauty in collecting, no matter how you do it, it usually opens doors to other possibilities. I have not stopped collecting for the NES, however things are pretty tough now, so to keep my hobby alive I had to branch out even more than before. I have never regretted my decisions. Since my wife and kids are onboard and think that it is cool, then hey, why the hell not? Bottom line is. if it makes you happy and you have the means go for it. It is pretty exciting when you come across a game in the wild that you have wanted for several years and never wanted to pay premium prices for it, and then you stumble across a mint condition game for much cheaper than you ever imagined in the weirdest places. The thrill of the hunt is the ultimate collectors rush for me. I never want to lose that feeling, so I give myself a large margin to work inside :P
