What are some of the obscure gems you have played for genesis? I don't want to hear the same old games so dont bother because I've played about 50% of the library at least.

-Starflight(amazing game for its time. huge game where you explore the universe, mine, and fight aliens. starts slow but amazing if you invest time)

-Super Hang-On(while not neccesarily obscure it is definately underrated. This game is an adrenaline rush if you get into it. It requires very strategic timing of when to speed up and avoiding obstacles. This isn't your boring HOLD 1 button to accelerate game. This game is immersive if you commit.)

I'm looking for more. Games that still hold up but are underappreciated. Sadly most genesis rpgs are very dated. I like to be engaged in thought but most are mindless grindfeasts outside of Shining Force.

I think Super Hang-On was pretty bad, to be honest. It's just not the same without the sprite scaling, and the feeling of speed lets a lot to be desired. The handling is also very sluggish, takes too much to hang.on from one side to the other, unlike in the arcade.

The extra mode is what really made the game acceptable.

Beyond Oasis(aka The Story of Thor as its known in Japan), a game that people seem to have forgotten but imo is really quite the lost gem. It is on a couple of the various Genesis Compilation, so its not hard to get hold of, but man its such a cool little gem....

super hang on is great you just have to get into it. Like actually clear a course and start appreciating every corner. The controls are very tight once you learn that this isnt the type of racing game you win by holding down 1 button. You have to slow down to win and literally the key to winning is hanging on. If you fall more than once you will not clear it.

The thing is that Super Hang-ON for the MD is not a stand-alone game. It's a port of an arcade game, and it is inferior in every aspect to its arcade counterpart.

Even if we don't take into account the lack of sprite scaling, the game feels three times faster in the arcade, and it controls a whole lot better. It's not a matter of learning the controls, they're just plain obviously better on the arcade version.

But it's not just the case of Super Hang-ON. Monaco GP, Out-Run, OutRunners etc. they all failed to nail the arcade feeling.

I've mentioned this game in other posts and for some reason it's one of my favorites, are you ready for this........ Steel Empire. I think this game had great music fun game play and good control. I originally picked it up at KB toys for $10 back in the day and I never got tired of it. You could probably pick it up for $2 now. It's a descent shooter and IMHO underrated.

Because we can all run out and go buy a Super Hang-On Arcade. Who cares if it's not arcade-perfect. Most games back then weren't. Super Hang-On was a lot of fun, IMO. However I feel that Hang-On for Master System made a bigger impression in it's day.

Maybe not, but you could've run out and play it at the arcade, genius. Like a lot of people did. And if you had actually done so at the time, then saw the MD version, there's no comparison whatsover. It plays like trash. Slow and easy.

So then according to your logic, then Space Harrier, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Altered Beast must have sucked because they weren't arcade perfect. That seems like a silly thing to crap on a game for since almost all Genesis ports weren't arcade perfect. And even if the arcade was still around, that's some ridiculous logic because what are the chances your arcade has that exact game? And the average gamer isn't gonna spend money on an arcade cabinet for themselves, either.

Those games hadn't arcade perfect graphics and sound, in gameplay terms they were more comparable. In the case of SEGA racing game ports, the lack of sprite scaling, sense of speed, tight controls did hurt the gameplay mechanics. They played noticeably worse.

The sprite scaling wasn't just for good looks, it gave incoming objects a sense of depth. Take it a way and it's just like they appear out of a sudden.

And you actually think people remember Super Hang-On, Out Run etc. for the MD ports? You think that more people played Super Hang-On on the MD than on the arcade? That's hilarious if you do.

I remember outrun for it's console port, it was awesome.

Aladdin is not a bad game by anymeans. The genesis version that is, its got some great level design and the animations on it look very smooth. David perry is a pretty good game designer.

You were given a link to Racketboy's webpage, that's all you pretty much needed anyway.

---------------------------------------------------------

Don't know how many of these are already on the Racketboy page but oh well -

Atomic Runner

Monster World IV

Flink - make sure the settings are on 60hz and not auto

Mega Turrican

Rolo to the Rescue

Marvel Land

Pulseman

Yu Yu Hakusho Makyo Toitsusen

Alicia Dragoon

Mercs ("original" mode is the way to go, not "arcade")

Gleylancer

Battle Mania - dai gin jou

Warsong

Air Buster

Bubble and Squeak

Bio Hazard Battle

Alien Soldier

Super Fantasy Zone

Snow Bros

Midnight Resistance

Alien Storm

Wani Wani World

Quackshot

Thunder Force IV

Chiki Chiki Boys

Animaniacs - Yeah its a license game, but its Konami doing a good job as usual

Honestly I could go on and on and on with this, you'd be better off giving some kind of indication on what types of games you like.

lol pretty much all of them. There were so many genesis games with awkward names and were just flat out weird so the mainstream kinda rejected them outside of japan but once you got into them you realized how flippin awesome they were.

Mega Bomberman- A Highly Addictive and Fun game, People still don't mention this game Much

Dynamite headdy- Bizarre but amazing

Rocket knight Adventure- Another Amazing Gem

Ristar-Very pretty unique game

Eswat- I really loved this game! I'm suprise people didn't play it as much as i did back in the day

Gunstar heros- Everyone loves it now, but it should've been one of the genesis top sellers

Splatterhouse 3- Great game

Castlevania: Bloodlines- Amazing game

maybe it doesn't count due to being a modern retro project, but "Pier Solar: The Great Architects" is easily the best Genesis RPG.

not enough people know about this game, or talk about it, its absolutely fantastic.
